With a westernizing influence on the dietary habits among Korean people, there has been a growing demand for taking physical exercise. Nevertheless, not everyone can afford to go to health clubs. As more and more people feel short of time in this very busy society, it becomes inevitable to put more emphasis on the so-called "Sports in Everyday Life." Accordingly, a growing number of people find it important to take exercise at anytime and anywhere such as parks, squares and offices. In this regard, the Korea Council of Sports for All (www.sportal.or.kr) has come to wage its 7330 campaign with a recommendation that people should make it a rule to take 30 minute's exercise for three days a week.

The KOCOSA, which has been taking the lead in promoting exercise in everyday life, is scheduled to elect its next president on February 15. A new president will be expected to lay the groundwork for the council for the upcoming 20 years. Its candidate Hong Jun-Yong was interviewed with our magazine Power Korea. He has played an active role in numerous organizations including an advisor of the KOCOSA and the chief director of the KASA.

Contributing to Realizing Healthy Society

by Promoting National Sports in Exeryday Life

In this aging society, sports in everyday life has become more and more meaningful. That's because not only the young need exercise to prepare themselves for declining years and but also the old can enjoy their remaining years only by continuing their sports in everyday life as leisure activities. Against these backdrops, the KOCOSA has set its aim at building up a system for helping Koreans improve their health with simple exercise in everyday life, thus, improving an overall standard of national welfare.

¡°Medical experts say that regular exercise is effective in curing obesity, which is harder to be cured than the cancer," said Hong Jun-Yong, adding that "People can maintain their health and happy life simply by following the 7330 exercise while the government can reduce its medical expenses by more than 16 trillion won a year."

The KASA, for which this candidate Hong serves as a chief director, plays a key role in building up an infrastructure of Korean sports in living. It is an assessment body that finds and fosters living sports teachers and verifies their qualifications. It is also a non-profit sports corporation designed to enhance national health and sound leisure activities by encouraging its leaders to make living sports culture widespread. What is better, it has made great contribution to enhancing national prestige abroad by boosting the exchange of living sports culture at home and abroad.

Hong Jun-Yong, Healthy Living Sports Man

Mr. Hong, who is running for the presidency of the KOCOSA, majored in social welfare in a university and alternative medicine in a graduate school with an M.S. degree. It is Mr. Hong who first introduced a coined word "dance academy" after learning party dance in the U.K. and U.S. He contributed to improving dance sports and party dance techniques. He went so far as to win the championship of the Korean modern dance sports. He also serves as a social worker and a recreation teacher, and holds a certificate of the arts of self-defense of the 5th grade. He gave a lecture in physical training (in a top policy-making course of bureau-chief-grade) for the Central Officials Training Institute for 10 years and the Korea National Police University (in a peace policy-making course) for 11 years.

He has played an important role in about 20 organizations including a rhythm sports director of Lee Myung-bak's camp for the 17th president election. In particular, he taught about a group of 8 million people interested in dance and led the van of creating this government by voicing his support for Mr. Lee in cooperation with dance teachers and related organizations. He is still on the front line in business, giving a private license to 2,000 dance teachers for promoting national health and sound leisure activities. Moreover, he is a chairman of the Jea Information Communication Corp., carrying out healthful management combined with sports. All things considered, he is a promising candidate for the presidency of the KOCOSA, with abundant experiences on living sports in the field.

He is always busy, thanks to his wide spectrum of careers and activities. Just as his mentality is sound, his body is also healthy. By virtue of his physical strength, he is active in business, too. In Spring, 2011, he went to Hanoi, Vietnam and promised to exchange park & square sports culture along with the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. He also held a free festival in the Jangchung Gymnasium with Yanbian TV, with an invitation of about 8,000 Korean-Chinese technical students who failed to visit hometown in the Korea's Harvest Moon Day. And he is scheduled to hold a traditional folk culture festival in the DMZ with the presence of people of China as well as the North and South. He has a plan for combining this project if he is elected as a president of the KOCOSA.

He said as follows:

¡°We prepared for establishing the "Korea-China Living Sports Exchange Promotion Association" in which people of North and South and China participated in last winter. The Chinese government played a key role in arranging this project. It is meaningful because China is essential for the North-South reunion. It set a goal at bringing out the bright future of the KOCOSA through the communication among living sports men from various countries. In this festival, participants will play a variety of Korea's traditional folk cultural activities like shuttlecock kicking, kite-flying and see-saw jumping."

A New Man Who Fulfills the Needs of the Times

Candidate Hong has been carrying out a new project for establishing the "National Health Commission for Living 100 Years Old." That's because this project is essential for improving national health in this aging society. It has been proven effective as a result of conducting a test project upon the request of the National Health Insurance Corporation, which has already run about 3,400 classes for better health. Therefore, it will be likely to be more effective as long as it combines with the KOCOSA's 7330 slogan.

Candidate Hong puts a special emphasis on boosting sports culture in parks and squares. He even called it "campaign for grass-root living sports." He hopes that it will create more jobs as it requires a number of sports experts there. Likewise, he gives much consideration to making practical policies.

As a candidate, he pledged to guarantee a term of executives in office by revising the articles of association, increase staff's wages and operating costs, and improve the fringe benefits of executives and employees as high as those of the Korean Olympic Committee. He sets an ambitious plan to prepare grounds for state support to increase its budget and drastically expands the fund of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation. He also dreams of constructing a gymnasium of the KOCOSA to meet the prestige of 2,000 living sports people.

He said as follows: ¡°Just as politicians must do their best in politics and business men must do their best in boosting national economy, sports leaders must help people lead a healthy life by improving national health and leisure activities. When everyone can fulfills their duty, all of us can become happy."

We Have to Change Ourselves First

Recently he changed his name with his strong will. That's because he thought that leaders must change themselves first in order to change their organizations. He kept using his previous name Hong Gi-ju for 60 years since he was born in the year of Black Dragon, but decided to change it into Hong Jun-yong. It was a big event happened in the year of Black Dragon which is considered bringing in great fortune. He didn't want to be attached to his previous name, but never forgets teachings of the departed.

He explained as follows: ¡°Although I change my name for the great cause, I never give up following the teachings of my parents. My parents used to say that "Please, become the right man for our society," and "Please be strict to yourself, but generous to others." I am not a member of the National Assembly, but I have devoted my whole life in living sports. So, I am very confident that I can lead the KOCOSA in the right way."

Candidate Hong won merit awards from the Central Officials Training Institute and the Korea National Police University, and an appreciation plaque from the Eastern Branch Office of the Seoul District Prosecutor's Office. Considering his long record of business careers, he seemed to have been very busy around the clock. As he mentioned about his belief, he seems very strict to himself. However, he is successful in managing time on his own just as a professional dancer performs well, controling the whole floor.
