Car accidents by lane departure is continuously reported and it kills many drivers. The accident in Bongpyeong Tunnel that had 41 casualties in 2016 is a good example of how serious it can be. The government made it compulsory for commercial trucks to install land departure warning ever since and most passenger cars also included the system in the base model nowadays. While automobile companies are busy on this, a South Korean company Road Care paid attention to raised pavement and lane markers and introduced Korirang.
[Korirang]
Korirang is loaded with a yellow retro-reflector round band and an egg yolk-like rubber top that gives high visibility along the traffic lanes even in broad day and bad weather not to mention at night. In addition to visibility, it also gives 80dB warning alarm when a car crosses over the lane which is loud enough for pedestrians to be alarmed. The top of Korirang is made of rubber for instant recover and the warning alarm rings when pressured by an object. The more often pressured the brighter the reflection becomes.
"If the existing markers give around 4 meters of visibility in a fogged road, Korirang gives around 16 meters of visibility on the same condition which is 4 times better in brightness. It is 2 times better when in heavy rain and 4 times better at night. Because the top is made of pumping-type rubber, automatic restoring power keeps the same performance even by repeated pressure of large commercial vehicles over and over again. A pressure test on 23 ton truck carried out by a certified authority showed that Korirang restored back while the existing markers got broken. It is also bleaching-resistant and boasts strong durability against sharp objects. Other notable functions include sinking-resistant and twisting-free" says Changguen Kim, CEO of Road Care.
[Where Is Korirang Installed?]
Korirang is being installed in many areas of roads nationwide. Since its pilot installation around Moran station, Seongnam, in 2020, we can see them on school zones in Suwon and Siheung, roundabouts in Yangju and Paju, national highways in Danyang, Hamyang and Jeju, roads around Wangdong Reservoir in Gwangju, and many more. The national highway in Danyang used to see 2 to 3 mortality accidents a year but has seen no mortality event since installation of Korirang. Meanwhile, Jeju Island is planning to install Korirang on coastal roads in addition to national highways for its proven performance and effectiveness.
[Awards]
Korirang won the Korea International Trade Association president's prize at the Korea Invention Patent Exhibition 2021. Currently, Korirang is listed on the Pilot Purchasing Product of the Public Procurement Service with 10% preferential purchase. <PowerKorea>
