“I’m a happy virus spreader and happiness is in trust and passion!”
Professor Kim Soon-bok

Kim Soon-bok is a public servant at Gyeonggido Office of Education who calls herself as a happy virus spreader. “Everybody pursues happiness but many are failing since they stick to the means of happiness rather than their inner trust and passion” says Kim. Her talent in speech, in fact, has been well proved in many of her lectures themed on work performance, customer services and the art of speech. It is not a surprise that she is also working as a guest professor at Open Cyber University of Korea. She was appointed as a guest professor through the best instructor’s course at Korea University this year. In her lecture, Kim focuses on delivering ‘waking up your positiveness and passion’ to the audience as the tool to reach happiness. “Say I’m happy everyday no matter how hard the day is. I’m happy because I woke up again and see the world and breathe. You say ‘it’s hard and it’s hard’, then the words will be done accordingly and your energy leaves you.” She continues “I do a lot of works in a day as a public servant, a guest professor and a happy virus spreader. But I feel like I’m not tired at all while in fact I don’t have much time for a rest since I have many things to prepare for the next day.” It is interesting to know that this happy-full and energetic Kim had unlucky childhood and past. She had to earn her own bread and butter and to work double the amount of normal students to finish middle and high schools. She wanted to be a teacher but gave up since she could not afford a university which eventually led her to work as public servant during which her husband suffered from blood poisoning. With her husband being ok, she challenged for university again and made it this time in business administration with a 4 year full scholarship. She is now taking a PhD in counseling psychology. At her first academic presentation, Kim was so shaky that she could hardly breathe and this prompted her to take a course at a leadership center which eventually led to be a happy virus spreader today. “I gained my confidence and boldness standing in front of many people and then a trial visited me: my daughter was diagnosed with acute leukemia. It was a life or death situation and I must find a marrow donor as soon as possible. Instead of blaming the world, however, I decided to face the reality and I made it.” This experience made her even stronger than her confidence and she sometimes calls herself ‘a woman who can sing at the edge of the cliff’. “We can survive even at the edge of the cliff if we have strong mind and mentality. The difference between giving up and determined is just a difference of a slice of paper. And my job as a happy virus spreader is to help people have this strong mind and mentality.” Passion and confidence probably are the two words that explain about Kim the most. “I don’t care about how much money I earn from my lecture. I’m just happy enough if I can be of help to someone. And I will keep pushing forward this zeal for as long as my strength allows.”
