“Our patented contact lens will make your eye comfortable”
Kim Hee-sook, CEO of NewBio

Many contact lens wearers might agree on its drawback that they rinse and change it on a regular basis. The safety issue also cannot be easily missed as it directly touches the pupils. NewBio is a contact lens specialist boasting 30 years expertise in the field producing contact lens according to various purposes; correcting nearsightedness, correcting astigmatism or as fashion accessory. What made NewBio widely recognized by the public, however, was the Korea’s first contact lens made with ‘Terpolymer’, an artificial skin material that surprised the industry. It is also known as ‘dry-less contact lens’ and it has brought huge profits to the company. “Terpolymer boasts excellent hydrophile property and moisturization as well as oxygen penetrability. It doesn’t give eye discomfort even after long use or damages eyeballs or corneas. The ‘sand and sand’ method and ‘edge design system’ keeps distance between the lens and the eye with water to give maximum comfort” explained CEO Kim Hee-sook of NewBio. The company currently has 11 contact-lens related patents and is producing 8.5 million monthly units from factories in Seoul, Gwangju and China. The kinds of the lens are also around 50 and they are about 250 if included different types of design. “Technology is competitiveness” has been the long time chant of CEO Kim on which she pours huge money in R&D carried out at the affiliated research center opened in 2004. “Without the continuous investment in R&D, the success today wouldn’t have happened.” NewBio achieved sales of $10 million USD as of 2013 with 2/3 generated overseas. 30 countries including Japan, China, Malaysia, Russian and the UK are importing the contact lenses of NewBio at the moment and NewBio recently released ‘ARTRIC’ series and ‘EYES ON YOU’ and ‘MISTIC’ to drive up the sales figure. “Based on the success we have achieved, we are pushing forward expanding the number of stores in Korea while promoting disposable contact lenses overseas. Also obtaining the international standards and approval are our driving force to pioneer global market.” Meanwhile, Kim has been donating part of her profits to the people in need for many years with her will to make social contribution as long as she can.
