유기농인삼의 규모화·세계화, ‘괴산글로벌유기농인삼작목회’ 창립
예로부터 명약(名藥)으로 일컬어지는 인삼. 그 중에서도 충북 괴산인삼은 인체의 면역력을 높여주는 사포닌(saponin) 성분이 풍부하고, 품질이 뛰어나 세계적인 인삼 명산지로 잘 알려져 있다. 이러한 가운데 지난 5월 26일, 충북도내 최초의 유기농 인삼작목회 ‘괴산글로벌유기농인삼작목회’가 창립되어 세간의 관심이 집중되고 있다.
괴산은 세종실록지리지에 인삼재배 적합지로 꼽힐 만큼 청정한 환경과 질 높은 토질을 자랑한다. 대다수 재배지가 경사도 25도 이하, 해발 500m 미만에 위치해 있어 최적의 여건을 갖추고 있을 뿐 아니라, 연작 피해가 발생하는 여타 지역과는 달리 초작지가 많고, 토질이 황토질로 구성되어 있어 전국에서 손꼽히는 ‘고품질 우량 인삼’으로 평가받고 있기도 하다.
전국 5위, 충북도 최대 재배면적을 자랑하는 괴산인삼의 한 차원 높은 도약을 위해 창립된 ‘괴산글로벌유기농인삼작목회’는 인삼의 친환경재배 가능성을 널리 알리고, 유기농인삼의 규모화·세계화를 위해 노력하고 있다. 초대 협회장으로 추대된 소진호 회장을 비롯, 지역 내 관련업종에 종사하는 14명의 정회원으로 구성된 작목회는 4ha 규모의 친환경 인삼재배지를 보유하고 있으며, 올해 6.6ha 규모의 친환경 인증을 준비 중에 있다. 소진호 회장은 “많은 이들이 익히 알고 있는 것처럼 ‘인삼’의 효능은 땅의 기운을 빨아들여 응축시킨 데서 나옵니다. 때문에 인삼 재배에서 땅의 질을 최상으로 유지하는 일은 무엇보다 중요합니다. 이에 저희는 농약 사용이나 지력 약화 등의 문제를 해결하고, 친환경적인 유기농인삼 재배기술의 연구와 보급에 앞장서고자 노력하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

“세계시장을 향한 괴산인삼의 도전에 앞장서겠습니다”
소진호 회장은 20여 년 전 귀농한 뒤, 당시로서는 드물었던 ‘유기농 재배’에 대한 꿈을 키워왔다. 비록 여건과 판로가 부족해 초기에는 어려움이 있었으나, 지난 5년 전부터 본격적인 투자와 재배 시스템 개선을 통해 유기농 인삼재배를 실현하고 있다. 그는 “지난 2015년 괴산에서 열린 세계유기농산업엑스포를 통해 유기농인삼에 대한 대중적인 인식을 크게 끌어올릴 수 있었습니다. 토양의 중금속 검사부터 시작해, 화학비료는 전혀 사용하지 않는 엄격한 과정을 통해 생산된 괴산유기농인삼은 최근의 웰빙 열풍과 함께 전국의 소비자들에게 큰 인기를 얻고 있습니다”라고 말했다. 
물론 이러한 과정이 그리 쉬운 것만은 아니다. 온도, 습도 등의 토양상태와 일조량 조절, 각종 재해와 병충해 등 자칫하면 큰 피해를 초래할 수 있는 인삼재배의 어려움 탓에 자연의 생리 상태를 잘 알고 있지 못하다면 유기농 재배를 시도하는 것이 불가능하기 때문이다. 이에 작목회는 15년 이상 인삼재배를 이어온 베테랑 농민들이 함께 힘을 모으고 있으며, 향후 충북유기농업연구소와 같은 유관기관과의 협력을 통해 발전을 꾀할 계획이다. 
한편, 소진호 회장은 유기농 인삼의 해외 수출을 위한 기반 다지기에도 심혈을 기울이고 있다. 괴산인삼의 우수한 품질이라면 건강에 대한 관심이 점차 높아지는 세계 시장에서 충분한 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있으리란 생각이다. 괴산 지역 농업 발전에 대한 공로를 인정받아 2013 행정부장관 표창, 2009 농업인의 날 장관 표창을 수여받는 바 있는 소 회장은 “인삼 농가의 소득향상을 위해서는 다양한 방법을 모색하는 것이 필요합니다. 이에 저희는 인삼성분을 추출한 진액을 만들어 판매하거나, 인삼 특유의 사포닌으로 해충을 방지하는 ‘유기농 인삼딸기’를 재배하는 등 다양한 방법을 시도하며 성과를 이뤄내고 있으며, 인삼재배의 6차 산업화를 위해 연구개발을 멈추지 않고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 향후 괴산유기농인삼축제를 통해 대중들에게 유기농 인삼을 널리 알리고, 인삼재배에 관심을 갖는 귀농인들을 위한 교육에도 힘쓸 계획이라 전했다. 충북 괴산이 유기농 인삼의 메카로 도약하는 데 앞장서겠다는 이들의 다짐이 멀지 않은 미래, 값진 결실이 되어 돌아오기를 기대한다.

The ginseng grown or cultivated in Goesan is famous for containing rich saponin which improves immunity in our body. Gosesan County is one of the globally recognized regions of the top quality ginseng produce and to promote the industry more systematically the Goesan Global Organic Ginseng Association set its sail on 26 May this year. The county has the ultimate environment for ginseng to grow: an inclination of less than 25°, less than 500m height from the sea level, vast areas of the first planted fields, and rich red clay. The association is consisted of 14 industrial specialists including the president So himself and they are ambitious to promote organically grown Goesan ginseng to the world over Korea. The 4ha cultivation areas currently have been approved as eco-friendly and another 6.6ha is soon to be approved as such. “Like many people know today, the medicinal effect of ginseng comes from its absorbing of the earthen energy. In other words, the quality of the soil matters the most to grow the best ginseng. For this reason, we never use any kinds of chemical substances” said So. So jumped into ginseng business 20 years ago and it was relatively recently that he started to invest in improving cultivation systems. “The International Organic Expo held in Goesan in 2015 played a significant role to raise public interest in organically grown ginseng and the demand for Goesan ginseng has been steadily increasing ever since.” Ginseng in fact is a very sensitive crop easily affected by various factors such as temperature and moisture. Naturally, it is not surprising to know that all 15 members of the association are veteran ginseng growers who have had at least 15 years of experience in the field. President So in particular received a citation from the Minister of Interior and Safety in 2013 followed by the previous ministerial citation received on the Farmer’s Day in 2009. So said “The association is looking for various ways to increase sales of Goesan ginseng and introduced ‘organic ginseng strawberry’ which is selling well. The association will keep working hard to promote Goesan ginseng into 6th industry through active research and development.”
