Fostering happy children who will love their traditional culture and people
Daejeon Jeonwon Kindergarten provides systematic educational environment
Director Song Mi-hwa of Daejeon Jeonwon Kindergarten

Happy school Jeonwon Kindergarten
Learning eco-friendliness through culture and nature

Jeonwon Kindergarten started with 19 children who all graduated at the end of the course. For the last 30 years, the kindergarten has fostered 2,400 children in total. Director Song Mi-hwa and all teachers at Daejeong Jeonwon Kindergarten respect children as complete persons and give their utmost effort and care so that children can grow happy. 65 teachers in 15 classes manage 380 children on 6 buildings on a 6,000 square meter land surrounded by thousands of trees.

“I opened the kindergarten 35 years ago. Back then here was suburban and people wondered why she opened a kindergarten in this place. I was inspired by A.S.NEILL who wrote Summerhill and I decided my mind to build ‘happy school and happy education’ he mentioned in the book not only for children but also for teachers and staff. It is important for children to be respected as complete persons and to grow in happiness. I adopted his ideas and philosophy but I introduced traditional education of Korea in terms of the educational contents and brought up the educational slogan ‘Fostering children who love oneself, their neighbor and country and who embrace the world in happiness’. Education for children is the foundation for being physically and mentally sound adult after 30 years. And sleep well, eat well and play well are the three core values of the basic education. The last one is especially important and it must be linked to home education. This is the contents of education in kindergarten and we have built a 3 year effective curriculum that meets the contents in accordance with state educational policy. We take health and safety of the food seriously and never use any instant food ingredients including ham and sausages” explains Song.

Jeonwon Kindergarten also focuses on promoting Korean culture and our ancestor’s spirit. Children build their love of the country and right personality by playing traditional games and learn the importance of eco-friendliness by experiencing life in rural areas.

Song sees the world with children’s eyes

You might feel like you are in a forest when visiting Jeonwon Kindergarten as there are thousands of trees and many flowers and vegetables. This eco-friendly educational environment promotes curiosity of children on nature from which they build research ability and creative thinking. At Jeonwon Kindergarten, children take part in sowing the seeds and cultivating and pick a book for reference among 18,000 books lined up neatly at the Light & Sound Library.

“The contents of eco-friendly education contain nature we can see and nature we cannot see. Our senses recognize the former such as trees, flowers, singing of birds and wind and clouds while our traditional culture and education are the latter such as traditional play, music, decorum, food and teaching. They are in our DNA. There were not many contents for traditional education when I first opened the kindergarten but the state educational policy systematically provides the related contents today.”

Respect each other and learn from nature

From the very beginning when she established Jeonwon Kindergarten, Song focused on clear mind, bright face and disciplined behavior of children.

“Respect for each is the foundation of our ancestor’s philosophy and spirit. And this is not only applies to adults but also to children as complete persons. People say that the age of the 4th Industrial Revolution is nigh and children will live the age. For this reason, we have to educate children with a prospect for the next 30 years and I’m always working on it to bring right and effective contents. But the contents must be built based on our valuable tradition. Nature in particular cannot be altered by any artificial intellectuals. Sensing the fine beauty hidden here and there in nature make children better understand their friends and better behavior. It is not much to say that this very basic education decides their whole life. Therefore, it is my duty to provide ideal educational environments to children.”

Song added “All programs and educational contents at Jeonwon Kindergarten are children-centered. And we would have not been who we are today without continuous support of school parents of those 2,400 children who have passed our excellent educational system. I and teachers and staff at Jeonwon Kindergarten will keep carrying on our utmost effort and care to bring the very best educational environment for children.”
