Stern Tube Mechanical Sealing Device cuts off seawater from entering
Bilge (waste water on the bottom of a vessel) normally is made by this way: seawaters get into the engine room of a vessel through the axis of shaft and they are combined with the lubricating oil in the engine to be bilge. To prevent this, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Korea Environment Corporation and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperation are raising public awareness on ‘bilge’ to be treated by land collection and disposal, but the recognition of fishermen and the heads of related organizations on the issue still seem to be unsatisfactory. 

Recently, fishermen are importing stern sealing device from the US and Japan to reduce bilge but the price is too expensive and it is not solving the issues of safety and seawater blocking of all vessels. To solve this problem, Chungarm Industry CEO Jung Yeon-myeon poured his energy in R&D for 3 years and developed ‘Stern Tube Mechanical Sealing Device’.

“Seawater gets into the engine room of small and midsize vessels through the cracks of the stern tube rotation axis to cause bilge which leaks to the sea to contaminate the water. The remarkable function of the developed ‘Stern Tube Mechanical Sealing Device’ is to completely block the leaking of the waste water to the sea. Also, spreading of the eco-friendly mechanical sealing device will prevent the leak of bilge and sinking of the vessel while removing the moisture in the engine room to improve durability of engine, rotation axis and electric switchboard. 

Going global with differentiated technologies

The core technology of the Stern Tube Mechanical Sealing Device is at the sealing arrangement of lubricating type: the tube blocks the incoming of the seawater. It reduces maintenance fee and prevents the engine room from flooding. The advantages of this product is that the Stern Tube Sealing Device holds the axis one more time in addition to the support of the grand packing to reduce the vibration on the rotation axis and its fatigue. It also extends the life span of the rotation axis, reduces its change cost and solves the petty works of the existing grand packing construction. Because of these excellent functions, the device in fact is a little bit expensive than the other existing devices. And this is the point where the government needs to bring up a support plan on the benefit of protecting environment and job creation (we do not need to import overseas products anymore). 

CEO Jung applied for a patent for the device in 2010 and obtained a patent in 2011. The device was first installed in ‘Mansungho’ vessel in 2011 followed by Angel 3, Somsarang 1 (Hansol Co., Ltd), Dongbaekho (cruise boat), Bogyeongho (fishing boat), Badahariho (fishing boat) and Maemuldoho (cruise boat). Not a single device has caused any problem for the last 6 years. Currently, the device is installed in 100 boats and vessels in Gwangwon Province. 

Apart from the Stern Tube Mechanical Sealing Device, Chungarm Industry also boasts its own developments of ‘K’ BEVEL Auto Processor, SNIP Form (stiffener, etc.) Steel Plate Sales Auto BITE Processor and 4 EDEG Simultaneous Auto BITE Processor. 

By developing the Stern Tube Mechanical Sealing Device, Chungarm Industry not only has contributed to the improvement of the efficiency of vessels but also to protecting the environment. And its differentiated technologies will be the driving force for the company to go global in the future.
