지역사회와 상생하는 교회, 나눔이 펼쳐지는 열린공간
용인시 처인구 이동면에 위치한 송전교회 앞마당에서는 매년 5월 5일이 되면 특별한 행사가 열린다. 지역사회의 어린이와 가족들을 위해 송전교회에서 마련한 ‘어린이 꿈축제’가 바로 그것이다. 올해로 3년째를 맞이한 이 행사에는 각 관련기관의 협조를 통해 의사와 소방관, 경찰, 군인, 봉사자 등 다양한 직업을 체험해 볼 수 있는 참여마당이 펼쳐져 큰 호응을 받고 있다. 또한, 맛있는 먹을거리가 가득한 먹거리 마당과 가족끼리 단란한 시간을 보낼 수 있는 피크닉 존이 구성되어 있으며, 한 편에서는 댄스, 태권도, 마술 등의 문화공연이 곁들여져 더욱 즐거움을 더한다. 올해에는 예년보다 많은 1천7백여 명의 지역주민이 행사장을 찾음으로써 명실 공히 지역을 대표하는 축제로 자리 매김하고 있음을 증명했다.
100년을 훌쩍 넘는 역사를 가진 송전교회는 이처럼 오랜 시간동안 지역주민들과 함께하는 사역을 펼쳐왔다. 특히, 2004년 권준호 목사가 담임목사로 임명된 이후, 지역 곳곳에 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 것은 물론, 교회가 지역사회의 일원으로서 더불어 상생할 수 있는 사회복지사역에 더욱 초점을 맞춰왔다. 권준호 목사는 “그간의 노력을 통해 교회가 단순히 교인들만을 위한 격리된 공간이 아닌, 지역주민 누구나 편하게 쉬어갈 수 있고, 정겨운 담소를 나눌 수 있는 열린 공간으로서 자리하도록 탈바꿈시킬 수 있었습니다. 이번 행사를 준비하는 과정에서도 저를 포함한 모든 구성원들이 6개월 전부터 기도와 땀으로 노력해왔으며, 더욱 많은 분들이 함께 즐길 수 있는 축제를 성공적으로 개최해낼 수 있었습니다”라고 밝혔다. 
지역사회를 위해 헌신하고 봉사하는 자세는 결코 하루아침에 배어들지 않는다. 송전교회는 이미 오래전부터 지역 내 소외된 이웃들을 위한 봉사와 나눔을 펼쳐왔으며, 15년 째 지역 어르신들을 위한 ‘송전노인대학’을 운영하고 있다. 송전노인대학은 65세 이상 어르신들을 대상으로 15개 학과를 운영, 다양한 전문지식과 노후관리를 위한 특강을 펼치고 있으며, 소풍이나 문화탐방 등의 체험활동도 진행하고 있다. 기수 당 150명을 상회하는 인원으로 비용 면에서 버거운 부분이 있지만, 새로운 배움에 기뻐하는 어르신들의 모습에서 더할 나위 없는 보람을 느낀다고 한다. 그밖에도 가정의 달 잔치한마당, 지역 독거노인을 위한 김치 사역, 어려운 이웃에 밑반찬을 전달하는 ‘도르가 반찬봉사’, 노후 된 주택을 고쳐주는 ‘오이코스’ 봉사 등을 꾸준히 펼쳐오고 있으며, 바자회 등을 통해 소외계층 학생에게 장학금도 지원하고 있다. 

“더 많은 분들에게 진정한 행복을 전하고 싶습니다”
교회란 하느님의 사랑 안에서 사귐과 섬김, 나눔이 이뤄지는 공동체다. 송전교회가 더욱 특별한 점은 이들의 섬김과 나눔이 교회라는 울타리 안에 갇혀있는 것이 아니라, 지역사회를 향해 무한히 뻗어가고 있다는 것이다. 이러한 정신이 가장 잘 드러나는 부분 중 하나가 그들이 운영하는 축제와 노인대학 어디에서도 교회에 대한 이야기를 꺼내거나, 전도에 나서는 사람을 찾아볼 수 없다는 점이다. 권 목사는 “행사에 교회의 색깔을 내게 되면, 교인이 아닌 분들의 경우 거부감이 생기거나 참여를 꺼리게 될 수도 있습니다. 저희는 지역사회를 위한 활동에 더 많은 분들이 아무런 편견 없이 참여하고, 그로 인해 행복해질 수 있다면 충분하다고 생각합니다. 그로 인해 교회에 대한 이미지가 좋아지고, 자발적으로 교회를 찾는 분들이 늘어난다면 그것으로 고맙고 감사할 따름입니다”라고 말했다. 실제로 송전교회의 아무런 대가없는 헌신에 감명받거나, 이러한 활동에 직접 참여하고자 교회를 찾는 이들이 더욱 늘었다고 한다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 단순히 교인 수만을 늘리는 데 집중하거나, 빚을 내서라도 교회를 넓히고 좋은 건물을 짓기보다는, 많은 사람들의 마음속에 꿈과 사랑과 희망을 심어주는 것이 더 행복한 일이라 강조했다. 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 역동적인 젊은 교회, 다음세대의 꿈을 키우며 성장하는 건강한 교회를 만드는 일에 매진하고 있는 권준호 담임목사. 바쁘고 고된 일이지만, 지금 이 곳에서 목회활동을 하는 것이 너무도 행복하다는 그의 말을 통해 더욱 많은 이들이 사랑과 나눔의 진정한 가치를 다시금 되새길 수 있는 계기를 발견하게 되길 바란다.

Song Jeon Church puts in practice of sharing and is open to everybody

Song Jeon Church is in Idong-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin City. The church holds every 5th May a special event in the front garden: ‘Children Dream Festival’. The festival, started three years ago, invites doctors, fire fighters, police officers, soldiers and volunteers to give children job experiences. Children and families can enjoy delicious food over the experience programs and sub events like dancing performance, taekwondo and magic show are also held to give diversity and fun. Around 1,700 residents visited the festival this year and it has grown to be one of the representative festivals in the region today. 

Song Jeon Church boasts over 100 years of history and has been spreading the love of Jesus to local residents. The popularity of the church was further enhanced when the current pastor in charge Gwon Jun-ho started his duty in 2004 for his gave more focus on social activities. 

“Song Jeon Church shifted its image from being a church for Christians to an open church where everybody can have a rest and share a talk with each other. The Children Dream Festival in particular is prepared in 6 month period during which many organizing members and performance givers closely work together” explains Gwon. 

Song Jeon Church has run ‘Song Jeon Elderly College’ for 15 years. It aims people aged above 65 to be provided special lectures on knowledge and retirement management through 15 departments alongside picnics, cultural tours and experience programs. Although the church is squeezed in the budget to accommodate around 150 elderly students, the organizers are well rewarded from the smile and happiness on the face of the students. 

Other notable social activities of the church are ‘Dorcas Food Service’, a free kimchi and side dish making and ‘Oikos’, a free house repairing service, and a bazaar and a scholarship program.

A church is a community where its members show respect, share and exchange in love of God. The reason Song Jeon Church is special is that it is not only a community within the church but a community for residents. It is interesting to know that not a single member of Song Jeon Church do the missionary work or talk about the Bible at the Children Dream Festival or in Song Jeon Elderly College. 

“This is because it can cause a sense of repulsion to non-believers. Also, an event should be an event but not a tool to spread one’s belief. The events and programs Song Jeon Church organizes and runs aim at promoting the value of sharing. And this, I believe, will eventually create agreeable images of churches and it would be delightful to see that non-believers naturally pay a visit to the church on the occasion of these socially good events and programs as a result.” 

In fact, there have been an increasing number of people who visit to the church recently. Pastor Gwon emphasizes that sharing and delivering true happiness to people is more important than increasing the church members or expanding the size of the church on debt. Gwon’s focus is on creating a dynamic and young church, a church that supports the dreams of young people and a church that contributes to building a sound belief. 

Gwon says “I’m happy as I am and what I’m doing. It is not an easy work physically to help people in need but value of an action and the action of sharing are far bigger than the physical fatigue.”
