[Art] Oriental painting artist Gong Eun-sung
Creating unique art world in charm of warm and comfortable oriental painting
“I want to be an artist who gives a peace of mind to appreciators”
Gong famous as ‘Bukjonghwa (northern sytle)’ artist
The tradition passed down from master Bukjonghwa artist Nojeon Muk Chang-sun

Pushing forward her creative zeal in Wando County in South Jeolla Province, artist Gong Eun-sung liked painting since she was a child. She was born in Nonsan City and went to Seoul with his father and finished her middle school. She worked 8 years in the capital and went down to Wando following her husband. All those years, she never lost her passion in painting. When the time came that Gong was much encouraged by her acquaintance, she started in earnest with western painting first but soon turned her course to oriental painting on the occasion of meeting with a master Bukjonghwa artist Nojeon Muk Chang-sun from whom she leaned the Northern style for 7 to 8 years. She still pays a visit to his teacher once a week to deepen her technique. “The Northern style is a conception used in contrast to the Southern style in landscape paintings. While literati and gentle folks used the latter with emphasis on detail, professional artists used the former with emphasis on strong lines and decorative expressionism. The Northern style is not easy but I would have drawn some special results thanks to my teacher Muk” explained Gong.

Light and shade in work express deep sentiments of the artist
Gong points out ‘the power to make people absorbed’ as the biggest charm of oriental painting. “One must work in smell of oil for a work of western painting. The use of oil paint requires a considerable amount of time and one must take a break every now and then. But the thing I like doing oriental painting is that the ink releases its unique scent and gives different light and shade as I draw and it makes me concentrate for a long time” said Gong. We might find the beauty of high and low concentration and color in Gong’s landscape paintings. This of her excellent talent has been well recognized by winning a golden prize at Korea Art Competition and an excellent prize at Korea Paintings and Calligraphic Works Competition. “I can make works the whole day if I want to in oriental painting. My love of it is so great that drawing a tree can excite my heat and every touch of brush is like it reflects my inner side although I suffer from disappointment every now and then. But that is the feeling I have to embrace as an artist” said Gong adding that “My university student daughter is the greatest fan of me and I thank her for unsparing support and encouragement which make my work deeper and stronger.”

Widening her knowledge at Hongik Institute
of Continuing Education for Culture and Arts
“I want to be an artist who gives a peace of mind to appreciators”

While deepening her technique with her teacher Muk, Gong at the same time is fostering talented students who can spread the charm of Bukjonghwa to more people. She also is active as a member of Korea Paintings and Calligraphic Artists Association and a member of Chungmukheo. Meanwhile, in order to widen her knowledge, Gong is taking a creative art course at Hongik Institute of Continuing Education for Culture and Arts at the moment through which she plans to widen her creative scope to objects, portrait and much more. “My interest in painting led me to have built my art world for more than 20 years. I will expand the scope of my work and meet more people to communicate. I’m working on my future exhibition at the moment and I hope I can be remembered as an artist who gives a peace of mind to appreciators” said Gong. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
