일상 속에서 소통하는 미술관 갤러리엘, 강남을 '문화의 거리'로 만들어
서울시의회 밥퍼나눔 자선전시회 참여하며 나눔 행보 열심

최근 국내 미술관에서는 해외 유명 작가들의 초대전과 국내 작가들의 전시 등 프로그램이 풍성하게 열리는 등 국내 미술 애호가 층이 점차 두터워지고 있다. 그러나 생업에 종사하는 많은 직장인들이나 가정주부 등에게 미술관의 문턱은 상상 이상이다. 평일에 퇴근한 뒤 미술관을 찾으면 제대로 전시를 구경하기에도 빠듯하기 때문이다. 관객과 대중들에게 친숙한 미술관, 생활공간과 가까이에 있는 미술관을 추구하는 이남숙, 김민정 모녀화가의 갤러리엘은 인사동 '문화의 거리' 본점, '유통의 거리' 분당 하나로클럽 2호점에 이어 지난달 19일 서울의 중심 강남에 3호점을 오픈하고 지역 주민들에게 따뜻한 아름다움을 선사해 호응을 얻고 있다.

친숙한 예술, 편안한 예술 추구하며 강남 주민 갈증 해소해
1,000만 인구가 살아가는 서울. 그 중에서도 교육의 중심, 경제의 중심인 강남은 높다란 빌딩과 아파트, 상가가 한데 모인 독특한 장소다. 강남 골목의 한복판에 작은 미술관이 매일 늦게까지 열려 화제가 되고 있다. 학원과 상점, 아파트들 사이에 위치한 갤러리엘 강남점은 보는 이의 마음을 편안하게 하는 힐링 전시공간으로 그리 큰 규모는 아니지만 이남숙, 김민정 모녀화가의 작품을 포함해 갤러리엘 소속 화가인 김용모, 황제성, 김윤, 오세영 화가 등 다양한 작가들의 작품이 한 데 모여 있어 그 전시 내용만으로도 매우 알차게 구성되어 있다.

갤러리엘 강남에는 이남숙 화가의 대표작 ‘사유의 시간’, ‘아름다운 대화’, ‘사랑의 인사’ 등을 비롯해 김민정 화가의 ‘행복한 여행’, ‘행복한 이야기’ 시리즈 등 마음을 따뜻하게 하는 작품들이 전시되어 있으며 새하얀 벽에 비치는 오렌지색 조명으로 갤러리의 분위기를 물씬 냈다. 이곳에 발을 들이는 순간 마치 그림 하나하나가 공간에 포인트를 주는 것 같은 느낌을 받게 되고 자연의 풍경과 그 속에서 살아 숨 쉬는 인간에 대한 상념에 젖게 만든다.

이남숙 화가는 "인사동 본점, 분당 하나로클럽 2호점에 이어 강남에서 3호점을 열게 된 것은 분당에서 만나는 관객들의 대다수가 강남에서 이주해온 분들이었고, 그 분들의 이야기를 들어본 결과 강남 거주민들이 미술에 대한 수요층은 많으나 해소할 방법이 없고 오히려 미술에 대해 막연한 거리감을 갖고 있다는 이야기를 들었기 때문이다"라며 "갤러리엘 강남은 8시까지 오픈해 퇴근 후 자유로운 관람이 쉽고 작가와 직접 만나 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 화랑 문화를 정착시켰다. 우리 갤러리가 강남 주민들의 갈증을 해소할 수 있는 곳이 되어주기를 바란다"고 이야기했다.

이남숙 화가 '아름다운 대화', '사랑의 인사' 시리즈 등 선보여
6월 스위스 스코프-바젤 아트페어 참여해
갤러리엘의 대표이자 오브제와 마티에르를 활용한 독창적 화풍으로 유명한 이남숙 화가는 40여 회 개인전과 600여 회의 단체전 및 초대전에 참여하는 등 활발한 전시 활동을 이어가고 있다. 이 화가의 대표작인 '사유의 시간' 시리즈는 마티에르 기법을 활용해 캔버스에 돌가루를 올려서 투박하면서도 정감 있는 느낌을 전해주는데, 이 시리즈는 하나의 큰 주제를 두고 여러 가지 작은 작품을 엮어 스토리텔링 형식으로 만들어낸 작품이다. '아름다운 대화' 시리즈 중 100호 규모의 한 작품도 갤러리엘 강남에서 만날 수 있는데 물고기와 새를 통해 가족이 서로 이야기를 나누는 행복한 풍경을 표현하고 연꽃이 진흙탕에서 생명력을 피워내는 것처럼 행복한 순간을 엮어내는 의도가 담긴 작품이다.

이남숙 화가의 작품은 사랑의 교회 전인치유센터를 비롯해 조선일보 미술관, 정부종합청사, 분당치과병원 등에 소장되어 있으며 MBC 드라마 '왔다 장보리', KBS 드라마 '국가가 부른다', SBS 드라마 '천일의 약속' 등에 작품을 협찬했다. 이남숙 화가는 최근 2014 대한민국 문화경영대상, 2015 대한민국 가치경영대상 문화예술부문을 수상하였으며 지난 6월 스위스 스코프-바젤(SCOPE-BASEL) 아트페어에 초대작가로 참여하기도 했다.

동화적 상상력에 기반을 둔 '행복한 여행', '행복한 이야기' 시리즈 등을 전시한 김민정 화가는 행복했던 순간의 기억을 재구성하는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 김 화가는 미래엔 출판사 중․고교 문학 교과서 6종에 작품을 수록한 바 있으며 MBC 드라마 '킬미힐미', '아직도 결혼하고 싶은 여자', 등에 작품을 협찬했다. 또한 2011년부터 2013년까지 에스콰이어 SONOVI와 콜라보레이션 계약을 맺고 마지막으로 연장 계약된 작품이 해외 라인업에 포함되어 면세점에서도 그녀의 작품을 만날 수 있다.

김민정 화가의 작품은 LH공사 경남지역본부와 평창 알펜시아 리조트 등에 소장되어 있는데 평창 알펜시아 리조트에는 기존 추상화 스타일의 작품이 소장되어 있다. 김 화가는 색면 추상 작업 외에 ‘행복한 여행’ 시리즈를 통해 관객과의 소통의 폭을 넓혀가고 있다. 삶에 대한 사색과 ‘보편성’이라는 코드로 대중과의 소통을 시도하는 이유는 예술의 본질이 보는 이와의 정신적인 교류에 있다고 생각하기 때문이라고 이야기했다.

이남숙, 김민정 화가는 현재 롯데백화점 분당점 VIP 쉼터인 MVG룸에서 모녀전을 진행하고 있으며 이남숙 화가는 10월 18일부터 서울시의회에서 열리는 밥퍼나눔 자선전시회에 초대작가로 참여한다. 이번 행사에서 발생한 수익금 전액은 최일도 목사가 이끄는 청량리 다일공동체 밥퍼나눔 봉사에 기증될 예정이며, 11월 중에 서울시의회 박래학 의장과 이남숙 화가 등이 직접 다일공동체를 방문해 밥퍼나눔 봉사도 진행할 예정이다. 이남숙 화가는 그 동안 유니세프 아동돕기 전시회, 사랑의열매 불우이웃 돕기 기금마련 전시회, 월드비전 후원기금마련 전시회, 엄홍길 휴먼재단 후원의 밤 작품 기증, KBS에서 방영된 지구촌 새마음 재단의 장애인 히말라야 등반 후원 전시 등에 참여하였으며 이번 밥퍼나눔 자선전시회까지 꾸준히 나눔 활동을 이어가고 있다.

이남숙, 김민정 화가의 작품은 편안한 예술, 관람객들과 함께할 수 있는 예술을 추구한다. 강남을 '문화의 거리'로 변모시키고자 하는 이남숙, 김민정 화가의 발걸음은 서울이라는 도시, 그 중에서도 강남에 새로운 활력을 불어넣을 예정이다.

Gallery L opens a branch at the heart of Seoul
Quenching the thirst of Gangnam residents with comfortable and friendly art
About 10 million people are living in Seoul. Gangnam District among the city is known as the center of education and economy and it boasts numerous tall buildings, apartment blocks and shopping malls. In the middle of the district is Gallery L which opens its door until late night. It is not that big in size but provides a healing space for people with the works of the gallery artists including Namsook Lee, Minjung Kim, Yongmo Kim, Jesung Hwang, Yoon Kim and Seyoung Oh.  

Especially, Namsook Lee’s ‘Time of Thinking’, ‘Beautiful Dialogue’ and ‘Lovely Greetings’, and Minjung Kim’s ‘Happy Travel’ and ‘Happy Story’ series are hanging on the wall under the delicate orange color which warm up the hearts of appreciators. You might feel when you step into the gallery that each work gives a point in the space and makes you think about the relations between you and nature. Lee said “I opened the Gallery L in Insa-dong at first and then opened another branch in Bundang District in which most residents came from Gangnam District. They said that the residents in Gangnam had a great demand for art but lack of art galleries rather made them lose interest in art. That’s why I launched a third branch in the district. I’m opening the gallery until 8 p.m. so that office workers and residents can appreciate art works and meet the artists on the way home after work.”

Lee to participate in Scope Basel Art Fair
Lee is famous for using various objet and matiere to create her unique works. She has held 40 solo exhibitions and participated in 600 group and invitation exhibitions. She used matiere methods and crushed rock on the canvas for one of her major works ‘Time of Thinking’ series and they deliver a rough yet intimate sense of feeling to appreciators. The series takes one big subject consisting of various small works in the form of storytelling. You can also see one of the Beautiful Dialogue series (162cm x 130cm) which depicts a family sharing each other’s story through fish and birds. Through this work, Lee wants to deliver a message of happy moments like a lotus is blooming from the dirty water. 

Lee’s works are housed in various places including Gallery Chosun, Government Building Management Service and Bundang Dental Clinic. They are also appeared on MBC drama ‘Come! Jangbori’, KBS drama ‘Nation’s Calling’ and SBS drama ‘Ten Thousand Days of Promise’. Lee recently won 2014 Korea Culture Management Award and 2015 Korea Value Management Award in the culture & art category, and participated in Scope Basel Art Fair last June held in Switzerland.

‘Happy Travel’ and ‘Happy Story’ are Kim’s fairy tale like art works. Her works were included in 6 kinds of middle and high school textbooks published by Mirae N Co. and also appeared on MBC dramas ‘Kill Me Heal Me’ and ‘Woman Who Still Desires for Marriage’. She signed a collaboration agreement with SONOVI in the period between 2011 and 2013 and the works included in the extended contract period is being sold at duty free shops. 

Kim’s works are housed in LH Corporation Gyeongnam and Alpensia Resort in Pyeongchang (abstract style work). Currently, Kim is expanding her scope of communication with people with her work ‘Happy Travel’. Contemplation and universality are Kim’s means to communicate with the public and Kim says that art is a spiritual exchange between the artist and appreciators. 

The mother and daughter artists are currently holding an exhibition in MVG Room (VIP room) at Lotte Department Store in Budang District. Lee also is scheduled to participate in the Seoul City Council’s Bobfor Sharing Charity Exhibition which will be held at the council building from 18 October. All the profits generated from the exhibition goes to Dail Community (headed by pastor Ildo Choi) in Cheongnyangni, Seoul. Chairman Laehak Park of Seoul City Council and Lee are also participating in the distribution of cooked rice which will be held at the Dail Community in the mid November.

Other voluntary services Lee has taken part include ‘UNICEF Child Help Exhibition’, ‘Fund Raising Exhibition for People in Need by Chest of Korea’, ‘Exhibition for Supporting World Vision’ and ‘Supporting Exhibition for Disabled’s Climbing the Himalayas by INMF (broadcast on KBS)’. She also  donated one of works to Um Hong Gil Human Foundation. 

Both Lee and Kim’s art world is about comfort and friendliness. With this value of their art works, the two artists are about to liven up the streets of Gangnam with full of art and culture.
