드넓게 펼쳐진 푸른 바다와 넘치는 에너지로 역동하는 국내 최대의 항구, 생명력 가득한 어시장과 금빛으로 빛나는 모래사장을 가진 대한민국 제2의 도시 ‘부산’은 매년 수많은 관광객들이 방문하는 아름다운 도시로 유명하다. 부산이 자랑하는 절경 가운데서도 사람들이 입을 모아 감탄하는 것은 바로 부산의 ‘야경’이다. 그리고 그 중에서도 ‘광안대교의 야경’은 부산에 방문한 이라면 반드시 봐야하는 명소로 꼽히고 있다.

스토리텔링 콘셉트의 교량조명, 광안대교를 수놓다
광안대교의 조명은 계절마다 다른 모습을 보여준다. 봄에는 새싹이 돋아나고 꽃이 피는 이미지의 Yellow와 Green으로, 여름은 푸르고 시원한 바다의 이미지인 Green과 Blue, 가을은 풍성한 수확과 단풍이 물들어가는 Orange와 Red, 겨울은 따뜻한 느낌과 눈의 이미지인 White와 Pink 위주의 색상변화로 연출된다. 또한 시민들이 많이 찾는 특정 시간대에는 다양한 움직임이 있는 연출조명으로 풍성한 볼거리를 제공하며, 불꽃축제 등의 행사시에는 음악에 맞춰 다양한 ‘부산 이야기’를 전하는 스토리텔링 조명으로 더욱 깊은 감동을 선사한다.

광안대교의 현재 모습을 만들어낸 주인공은 바로 ㈜스타라이팅의 이재용 대표다. 이 대표는 2009년 광안대교 특화사업 공모를 통해 당선된 이후 관련 부처 및 관계자들과의 열띤 토론과 회의를 거쳐 2013년 12월 6일 점등식을 통해 새로운 모습으로 탈바꿈한 광안대교를 부산시민과 전국의 국민들에게 소개했다. 이재용 대표는 “처음 부산에 왔을 때부터 ‘부산은 참 아름다운 도시구나’라는 생각이 들었습니다. 광안대교가 앞으로 부산의 랜드마크로 확실히 자리 잡고, 이를 계기로 더욱 발전하게 된다면 부산은 대한민국 최고의 조명도시이자 아시아 최고, 나아가 세계 최고의 조명도시가 되는 것도 가능하다고 생각합니다”라고 말했다.

광안대교 조명의 또 다른 특징은 강한 바람에도 끄떡없는 ‘안전성’이다. 일반적인 조명등의 경우 다리 구조물 옆에 부착하는 방식이어서 구조물에 손상을 주고, 파손되어 떨어지는 등의 위험요소가 있어왔다. 그러나 스타라이팅이 독자적인 기술로 개발한 교량용 조명장치는 케이블 일체형으로 되어 있어 구조물을 둥글게 감싸는 방식으로 손상 없이 설치할 수 있고, 로프가 받는 풍압을 줄여줘 조명 낙하 등의 위험을 완전히 차단했다. 또한 구조물 옆에 부착한 조명은 빛의 2~30%만 로프를 향할 뿐 70% 이상이 산란되어 조명의 효과가 떨어지는 데 반해, 이 제품은 빛이 정확하게 로프만 비출 수 있어 최소의 전력으로 최대의 효과를 낼 수 있다.

이 대표는 “케이블 일체형 조명등은 육상에서 통제할 수 있는 스피커와 연결되어 있어 프로포즈 등의 이벤트에도 활용할 수 있습니다”라며 단순히 보고 즐기기만 하는 것이 아닌 ‘직접 참여하고 소통할 수 있는 조명’이라고 설명했다. 스타라이팅의 ‘교량용 조명장치’와 ‘케이블 일체형 조명등’은 중국과 미국에서 특허를 취득했으며, 현재 미국에 위치한 교량을 대상으로 활발한 마케팅을 진행하고 있다. 특히 대표적인 현수교 교량인 미국의 금문교와 올해 국내에서 개통된 울산대교 등이 그 대상이 되고 있다. 또한 이 대표는 이를 바탕으로 세계 최고의 조명업체로 도약하겠다는 포부를 전했다. 

세계적 거장과의 기술협약으로 한 차원 높은 경관조명 제공
항상 새로운 아이디어와 도전정신, 멈추지 않는 열정으로 스타라이팅의 도약을 이끌고 있는 이재용 대표는 충북 제천시청 건설방재과 공무원 출신이라는 독특한 이력을 가지고 있다. 당시 조명 담당자로서 근무하면서 자연스레 조명과 환경에 대한 관심을 가지게 된 그는 시민들의 불편을 개선하고자 연구와 개발에 힘을 쏟기 시작했다고 한다. 그가 재직 당시에 개발하고 특허를 획득한 건만 해도 복지분야 특허등록 1건, 조명 및 기타 특허등록 11건 등 총 12건에 이른다. 버스정류장 벤치에 적외선을 적용해 건강에 이로움을 주는 ‘바이오 적외선 벤치’와 제천 U-City 사업에서 가로등 무선제어 장치를 활용한 실시간 네트워크 체계의 구축 등의 아이템 개발은 이 대표가 시민들의 편의와 안전을 도모하고자 고심했던 과정의 산물이다.

이후 조명산업 분야에의 진출을 꿈꾸던 이 대표는 2009년 부산에서 본격적인 스토리텔링 조명산업에 뛰어들게 된다. 지역과 국내를 넘어 세계 최고의 조명업체가 되겠다는 목표를 세운 이 대표는 프랑스 출신의 거장 알랭 귈로(Alain Guilhot)와의 파트너십을 계획한다. 파리 에펠탑, 중국 천안문 조명, 칸느 도시조명 등 세계적인 도시 경관조명 거장으로 이름 높은 그와의 파트너십을 통해 기존과 차별화되는 수준 높은 조명환경을 창출하겠다는 생각이었다. 현재 스타라이팅과 이재용 대표가 추구하는 스토리텔링 조명은 그의 영향을 받은 부분이 크다. 이 대표는 “알랭 귈로는 쓰레기장을 예로 들며 ‘사람들은 그곳을 악취와 쓰레기더미로 인식하지만, 디자이너는 이를 아름답게 보이도록 만들기 위한 방법을 고민해야 한다’고 말했습니다. 또한 단순히 눈에 보이는 것이 아닌 그 안에 담긴 이야기를 찾아야 한다고 조언했습니다”라고 전했다. 이재용 대표는 그 순간 ‘조명’에 대한 가치관이 변화하는 걸 느꼈다고 한다. 이후 조명으로 인한 이익창출보다는 작품을 만드는 것에 가치를 두고, 사람들이 이를 통해 ‘힐링’할 수 있도록 하는 것이 스타라이트의 경영철학이 되었다. 

어둠을 밝히는 빛은 언제나 사람들에게 편안함과 포근함을 느끼게 한다. 또한 우리 주위를 둘러싸고 있는 도시와 환경을 더욱 아름답게 만들고, 생활에 활력과 희망을 선사한다. 스타라이팅과 이재용 대표가 만들고자 하는 것은 이처럼 ‘진심을 전하는 빛’, ‘사람과 사람을 연결하는 빛’이다. 이들이 구현하는 빛의 세계가 우리 모두의 삶에 한줄기 따스한 온기로 다가오게 되기를 기대한다.

The lights that romanticizes Gwangan Bridge
The Gwangan Bridge enchants you with different lights in each season. It gives you yellow and green in spring, green and blue in summer, orange and red in autumn and white and pink in winter. When the time comes in which spectators gather the most to see the lights, they give various movements and, when in fireworks, they tell you a story of Busan in collaboration with the music played on the day. You might wonder who created this beautiful lights. It is Jaeyong Lee who runs a company called Star Light. 
He took in charge of designing the lighting of the Gwangan Bridge by winning a competition in 2009 and introduced his brilliant lighting design to the world on December 6, 2013. Lee said "I fell in love with Busan when I came down to the city for the first time. I now think it possible that if we create more of these beautiful lights like the Gwangan Bridge, the city will be the most beautiful city of light in the world over Korea." 
If the lights of the Gwangan Bridge are beautiful, the safety of the lighting can also win the game against strong wind. Developed by Star Light, the 'integral cable lightings' is exclusively designed for bridges and it guarantees not to cause any of existing problems such as falling down or damaging the bridge. Only 20-30% of the lights are heading to the ropes that are holding the lightings and the rest 70% are to other directions in the case of the existing lightings. But the lights of the Star Light's integral cable lightings are precisely heading to the ropes only and they maximizes the effect of lighting at a minimum electric power. Lee said "the integral cable lightings is connected to the speakers installed on the land and people can use it for a special event such as proposal." Star Light's 'bridge lightings' and 'integral cable lightings' obtained patents in China and the US and Lee is actively engaged in promoting his lightings in the US. Lee is especially targeting the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Ulsan Bridge opened this year. If business goes well, according to Lee, he will grow Star Light as the best lightings company in the world.
Global partnership through technology agreement
Lee used to work as a public servant in construction accident prevention department of Jecheon City. He was in charge of lightings and he naturally carried out numerous related R&D. He obtained one patent relating to welfare system and 11 patents relating to lightings during the time. He developed 'bio infrared light bench', beneficial to health, to be installed on bus stops and built a 'real time network' by using wireless control system for Jecheon U-City project. His ideas and developments contributed to the convenience of the citizens. 
Lee then moved to Busan in 2009 with an ambition of launching his own business. He planned to partner with a French lighting master Alain Guilhot, whose works cover Eiffel Tower, Tiananmen and the lighting design for Cannes, in the hope of creating high quality lightings different from conventional lightings. Lee said "Guilhot said that people think dumping ground disgusting but lighting designers have to trouble themselves with ways to make it look beautiful. He also said that lighting designers need to find a story which the bridge can deliver to beholders." This completely changed Lee's conception about lightings. Lee put the value of his work at creating his works that can make people happy but not doing it for profit.  
Light brightens dark, gives us hope and comfort and makes the city beautiful. The light Lee wants to create is the 'light that delivers one's heart' and the 'light that connects people to people'.
