UTR(urban transport-cable car), rising as a new paradigm in world tourist cities
Introducing new means of transport through a different concept
Cysco Poma CEO Chungkeun Lee

According to The Korea Transport Institute the number of registered vehicles reached to 3 million in Seoul by 2014 and the cost of congestion charge was $9b. This means that the traffic jams can cause waste of money on the road. Many major cities of the world are trying to expand the traffic lanes or interlock the traffic lights to better the flowing in order to digest the amount of traffics. But these efforts have reached limit due to the lack of road area, high energy cost and severe traffic pollution. In this situation, the interest in 'cable car' is increasing for a new transport means. Cysco Poma's CEO Chungkeun Lee says "the meaning of the word 'creation' doesn't necessarily mean it's making something new but the change of the concept". Power Korea has met Lee and heard about the new paradigm of urban transport.

The City of Berlin introduces cable cars after 50 years
"Cable cars seem to be the best option when it comes to inter-regional transport. It can solve the traffic problems, boost up the tourism and reduce the cost. It is better than the expansion of traffic lanes. It's becoming common in overseas countries. Cable cars and aerial ropeway can be combined to be a menas of one urban transport."

Recently, Berlin City has decided to introduce cable cars as a next generation transport means in the area of IGA Berlin 2017. It is happening after 50 years of its absence. Approximately 2 million visitors are expected to use the cable cars to move around the Marzahn-Hellersdorf exhibition area. The 1.5km panorama cable car course will enable the visitors move around easily and can see the whole expo ares above the land which the city expects it to be a landmark. It provides no traffic jams but safety according to German Traffic Census and this is the reason we have to pay attention to it.

Sustainable future-oriented transport means
Lee takes the Volga River in Russia, Ngong Ping in Hong Kong, Roosevelt Island in New York, and Bondinho in Rio de Janeiro as good examples of using cable cars. Lee introduced them as a good alternative for transport means and mentioned its validity. Firstly, it can reduce the cost of urban transport. It is eco-friendly and run by electricity and the consumption of energy is adjusted according to the number of passengers which means it has high energy efficiency. Also, we only need only actuator to run several compartments of a cable car. Secondly, it can be used in a narrow city area without congestion and the tower and platform can be built in a relatively small area. It especially shows its excellent capability in the high slant area and it can flexibly move in various areas. In addition, it can load many strollers and wheelchairs. That is why it is recommended in the national parks or Seorak Mountain in Korea where a lot of climbers, elderly people or children visit for a recreation or appreciating the landscapes.

His career is his passion expressed
Cysco Poma is the Korean agent of French based POMA S.A.S and Italy based LEITNER GROUP that manufacture ski resort lifts and cable cars. POMA possesses original technology and holds 50% of global market share with their safety measures which have been approved globaly. Cysco Poma is specialized in providing A/S and upgrading services for ski resort lifts, facility inspection and consulting, and urban cable car projects. Lee has worked with POMA for 20 years and Cysco Poma currently has the highest domestic market share. Lee pioneered the facilities of ski resorts in Korea and continuously introduced advanced foreign technologies to the field.

The works of Cysco Poma include ski resorts of Gangchon, Daemyung, Yongpyong, Muju, Jiam, Hansol Oak Valley, Yangsan Eden Valley, and Taebaek O2 Resort. If there is a new ski resort there will be Cysco Poma. The staff are highly trained in various fields including machines and civil engineering. Lee says "as safety is our top priority so have we the sense of duty and as the project takes a long time our passion is as much deep. The POMA's overwhelming technology and the Korean company's sense of responsibility are creating a synergy effect and a safe construction." Lee was warded the Distinguished Service Medal from France in 2007 for his contribution. Lee's history was his pride. Furthermore, he established CK & Associate to seek tourist cable car project in Korea.

Reborn as a landmark that represents Korea
"Cable cars and lifts were usually used in ski resorts and tourist attractions but they are evolving to be a means of transport. 'Automatic People Mover' will be a more precise expression of cable cars or lifts. When rails and platforms are added to these, people can move comfortably and the image of the city can also be improved."

Lee emphasizes on the advantages of using cable cars in terms of practicality and cost effectiveness. He gives a good example of using cable cars through the case of Madeleine in Columbia where the cable cars are used like Metro in Seoul. It has many advantages such as reducing logistics and congestion costs, solving the lack of electricity and traffic jams, and effective use of small land. Lee said "the world is changing to using cable cars but not for us yet due to the cost of investment, social regulations and environmental limitation.

But it should not discourage us to implement the project but we need to change our concept." The good example is the cable car in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province which is called as 'the national cable car'. It has carried 8 million passengers so far which is a great number considering the city's population being only 140,000. This proves that cable cars can be widely and effectively used nationwide. The city also boosted up the regional economy thanks to the cable car. It was chosen as 'The Star of Korean Tourism' in August 2014 by Korea Tourism Organization for the contribution of the Korean Wave tourism. In response, the central government announced the expansion plan of eco-friendly cable cars for activating the investment in the service industry last August.

Likewise, we have to take cable cars in different point of view as a new means of transport and tourism. Lee has an ambition to build landmarks in Korea like i360 or High-roller in Las Vegas. The number of foreign tourists to Korea reached 14 million and Power Korea wishes that the Korean landmarks would leave strong images in the hearts of the world tourists.
