한복, 젊은 감각으로 새로워지다

박근혜 대통령의 한복 외교는 많은 이목을 집중시키며 우리 문화를 바로 알리고, 한국의 이미지를 신장시키는 데 좋은 시너지 효과를 만들어 냈다. 이에 박근혜 정부는 ‘한복진흥원’을 건립하여 우리나라의 전통복식을 계승·발전시키겠다는 의지를 피력했다. 하지만 이와 관련한 정책들이 지지부진한 가운데 하나밖에 남아있지 않았던 대학의 전통복식과가 폐지된다는 안타까운 소식도 들린다. 협동조합을 운영하여 민간 차원에서라도 한복을 지켜나가겠다는 한복궁(www.hanbokpalace.co.kr)의 이은진 대표를 만나 우리나라 전통복식인 한복의 현주소에 대해 알아본다. 

한복을 사랑한 젊은 여성 CEO의 당찬 창업 스토리

이제 갓 서른을 넘긴 이은진 대표는 한복 시장에서는 아직 어린 CEO지만 탄탄하게 10년 경력을 쌓아온 한복 디자이너이다. 외삼촌을 비롯해 집안에 한복 업계에 종사하는 사람들이 있어 자연스럽게 한복과 인연을 맺어 온 그녀는 배화여자대학교와 단국대 대학원에서 전통복식을 전공하였다. 이후 유명 한복집인 이화명주에서 팀의 막내를 시작으로 현장에서 감각을 익혔고, 베틀한복에서는 빠르게 승진하여 인천 지점장을 맡기도 했다. “재료를 사다 나르는 것부터 손님을 응대하는 것까지 모든 것들이 한복디자이너로서의 역량을 키워줬다고 생각해요. 혼도 많이 나고 일도 쉽지만은 않았지만 저는 이 일을 시작할 때보다 갈수록 더 한복을 사랑하게 되는 거 같아요.”

자신만의 한복 세계를 펼치고 싶었던 이 대표는 2012년 ‘한복궁’을 개업하기에 이른다. 하지만 당시에는 고정 소득이 없는 대학원생인데다가 담보도 없어 은행 대출을 받기가 쉽지 않은 상태였다. 우연히 지인을 통해 청년 창업대출이란 상품을 알게 된 그녀는 그 길로 3000만원을 빌려 창업에 박차를 가했다. “처음에는 그 많은 대출을 어떻게 갚을까싶어 걱정이 많았죠. 다행히 창업 후 6개월부터 경영이 안정화되어 이미 상당부분을 갚았어요. 저희 한복을 입고 만족해 주시는 분들의 입소문이 있어 가능한 일이었습니다.” 

신랑신부와 어머님 세대 모두가 만족하는 <한복궁> 

‘한복궁’의 주요 고객은 대부분 결혼을 앞두고 한복을 맞추거나 대여하려고 오는 신랑신부들이다. 하지만 이에 못지않게 한복을 좌지우지하는 것은 어머님 세대들이다. “저희 한복궁의 강점은 전통미를 훼손하지 않는 선에서 자칫 부해 보일 수 있는 한복을 날씬하게 입을 수 있도록 디자인한다는 것과 색 배합을 우선적으로 고려한다는 점이에요. 어머님들과 자녀 세대 모두를 아우를 수 있는 저희만의 비결인 샘이죠.” 이 대표는 이러한 감각들을 발전시키기 위해 컬러리스트 자격증을 취득하고, 여가시간을 활용해 민화와 전통공예를 배우기도 했다. 또한 기존의 한복집이 스튜디오 촬영을 하는 신부에게만 한복을 서비스해왔는데, ‘한복궁’에서는 최고급의 궁중복과 한복 드레스를 신랑신부 모두에게 세트로 제공하여 서비스를 차별화하고 있다.   

한편 이 대표는 전통문화에 관심이 있는 사람들과 협동조합을 만들어 이사장직을 맡았다. 한복, 공예, 천연 염색 등을 하는 사람들과 함께 새로운 작업들을 이어갈 예정으로 현재는 홈페이지를 제작하고 있는 단계다. “정부 차원에서 협동조합을 장려하고 있는데 뒷받침해줄 기관과 인력이 미비한 상황입니다. 속히 정책적인 지원이 마련되어 같은 길을 가려는 사람들의 교류가 활성화되었으면 좋겠습니다.” 이은진 대표와 같이 사명감을 가진 젊은 CEO들이 더 많이 양성되어 우리 고유의 전통문화들이 다음 세대로 전수되어져 찬란한 문화유산을 세계에서 꽃 피우기를 바래본다.

President Park, Geun-Hye’s Hanbok diplomacy caught lots of attention in the world whenever she went around and it made a great synergy effect to improve an image of Korea and let people out there know about Korean culture properly. For that, President Park’s government used to insist on taking over and developing Korean traditional costume with establishing ‘Hanbok Promotion Center’. Still, all the policies about that intention in the beginning are getting dead and recently, it is said the only one department in the university, which is a Traditional Costume major, will be shut down. It is quite sad news. So, Power Korea met CEO Lee, Eun-Jin of Hanbok Palace (www.hanbokpalace.co.kr) who would like to keep it up even in a private organization by a cooperative association and figure out the current address of Hanbok, which is Korean traditional custom. 

Startup story of young female CEO who loves Hanbok 

CEO Lee, Eun-Jin of Hanbok Palace who is just over 30 is yet a young CEO in this Hanbok industry but she has experienced her career solidly for 10 years as a designer. Actually, it was very natural for her to have a relationship with Hanbok since she has a few relatives who were working in that industry. After all, she majored in a traditional costume study in Baehwa Women’s University and finished it at a graduated school in Dankook University. Afterwards, she started working for Ehwamyeongjoo, which is a famous Hanbok shop as a junior staff and there, she learned how to work on site and moved to another shop, Battl Hanbok. She was a local manger in Incheon after got promoted quickly. 

“I think I could grow a great capability as a Hanbok designer from buying every material for making it to serving the customers there. I was so clumsy to work at first and it was so hard to catch up, but ironically, I feel that I more love Hanbok as time goes by rather than when I started this job. Eventually, she arrived at the point to open ‘Hanbok Palace’ in 2012 as she wanted to show her own philosophy. However, back then, she was a graduate student without a regular income, so she couldn’t loan money without collateral. It seemed to be difficult but she knew there was a startup loan for the young from her friend. Finally, thanks to that loan, she borrowed 30 million won and started her business. “In the beginning, I was so much worried about how to pay that much money back. Fortunately, after opening my business, it passed about 6 months, and then my management was becoming stable and already paid off mostly. It was possible for customers who experienced our products to like and be satisfied with. They made it by viral.” 

Hanbok Palace that brides and bridegrooms and even their mothers all love! 

<Hanbok Palace>’s major customers are young pre-married couples. But, the final choice is also at the mercy by their mothers. “Our <Hanbok Palace>’s strong points is that we are designing Hanbok to look slender not looking like fat or exaggerating. Of course, we don’t damage the traditional beauty at all. And, we always consider the color combination in the first priority. They are our secret to cover all the generations such as mothers and young people.” 

CEO Lee acquired the colorist license to develop that sense and used to learn folk painting and traditional craft using her spare time. Besides, other many Hanbok shops are doing the service for couples who are only taking pictures at studio but, Hanbok Palace is making a different service by providing the high quality royal Hanbok and Hanbok dress as a set. 

On the other hand, CEO Lee is in charge of a director of the board with making a cooperative association with people who are interested in Korean traditional culture. They are all into Hanbok, craft and natural dyeing and plan to keep up with working together as collaboration. Now, they are building up their own homepage. “The government is encouraging that kind of cooperative system but, it is very little to help us as enough for real. I hope the connection for people who would like to take the same path to work well for each other by having any support from the government as soon as possible.” Throughout many young CEOs like CEO Lee, Eun-Jin who has a duty in mind, we hope our traditional cultural things would be handed over to the next generation to thrive in culture someday.
