광목에 표현되는 금강산의 화려한 자태 

백파 김철완 화백

백파 김철완 화백은 흰 종이, 먹물, 붓 지극히 소박한 이 세 가지 요소로 무궁한 세계를 만들어내고 있는 장본인이다. 동양화와 서예를 넘나들며 대한민국의 전통적 예술을 담아내고 있는데 그의 동양화는 한국의 빛깔에서 그 생명력을 찾으려 무던히도 노력하는 흔적을 느낄  수 있고 내면에서는 세계에서 한국의 산과 강이 가장 수려하다는 이야기를 전하고 있다. 

40~50대에는 고궁의 매력에 매료되어 전국의 수많은 고궁과 기와집, 사당, 정자, 사찰 등을 담아내어 당시 고궁하면 ‘김철완 화백’이라는 칭호를 받기도 했다. 현재는 금강산 풍경을 담아내어 우리 내 민족이 그리워하는 세계를 표현하고 있다. 오래전 한 번 가본 금강산이지만 민족의 영혼이 담아 있기에 그만의 표현력이 가미되어 민족의 그리움을 전하고 세계 최고의 전경을 자랑하는 금강산의 화폭을 작품으로 승화시키고 있는 것이다.     

그의 작품은 표현기법 또한 남다르다. 수묵담채를 기조로 한 표현을 화선지가 아닌 광목을 이용하고 광목에 도자 흙을 이용하여 제작한다. 광목은 질감이 좋고 흙과 먹의 채색이 조화를 이루는데 깊은 매력을 느낀다고 전했다. 이처럼 그의 작품은 전통적 측면과 현대적 측면을 접목한 새로운 ‘백파 김철완’의 기법으로 나타내어지고 있었다.  

오래전부터 서화를 동시에 쓰고 그리며 필법이면 필법, 화법이면 화법, 표현력이면 표현력 두 마리 토끼를 완벽히 구현하고 있는 김 화백은 “글과 그림을 두루 갖춘 서화야말로 우리 전통의 뿌리이다. 그래서 글과 그림이 만나는 새로운 예술세계를 추구해 누구도 표현할 수 없는 새로움을 선사하고 싶다”고 전했다.     

언제나 가장 한국적이면서 독창적인 기법을 만들기 위해 다양한 작품을 표현하고 있는 백파 김철완 화백. 그가 표현해낼 서예와 그림의 새로운 콜라보레이션은 앞으로 관객들의 탄성을 자아내기에 충분했다. 

백파 김철완은 사반세기에 가까운 긴 세월을 한눈팔지 않고 미술가로서 외길을 걸어왔다. 그의 작품은 수묵담채를 기조로 한 표현의 방법론과 기법상의 특징이 작가 특유의 어법으로 표출되고 있다. 특히 사계절 가운데 봄, 가을은 그의 예술양식과 소재의 주류를 이루고 있다. 아마도 자연의 사계(四季) 가운데 봄, 가을이 화려한 원색의 빛깔과 한국인의 색조로 갈아입는 자연의 환상적인 신비감을 만끽하기 위한 작가의 의도적인 배려와 그만의 취향이 아닌가 싶다.

나는 천성이 게으른 사람인 것 같다. 그러나 50여년 살아오면서 낮잠을 잔 적이 극히 없다. 아니 없는 것 같다. 무엇인가 생각하고 쫓아가야 한다. 게으른 사람인데 욕심이 많은 것이다. 붓글씨를 쓰기도 하고 전각을 새기기도 하고 생각이 깊어지면 그림에 빠져들어 헤메이곤 한다. 그러나 더 깊은 사색에 빠지면 혼자서 여행을 떠난다. 특별한 스케치 준비도 없이 아무데나 낙서를 하듯 그림을 그리곤 한다. 우리의 고향. 우리에 전통 한옥과 고궁을 마구 그린다. 그러나 화폭에 옮기는 것은 쉽지 않다. 언젠가 부지런해지면 메모된 것을 하나하나 화폭에 담고 싶다.

Brilliant figure of Mt. Geumgang expressed in cotton cloth 

Artist Baekpa Kim, Cheol-Wan

Artist Baekpa Kim, Cheol-Wan is the very man who is making the infinite world with only three very simple ingredients such as white paper, Chinese ink and brush. He is expressing Korea’s traditional art crossing over the oriental painting and calligraphy. And his oriental painting has something that he tried to find out the vigor of life from Korean colors. Inwardly, he is talking about the story that Korean mountains and rivers are the most stunning in the world. 

Around his 40~50’s, he was totally fascinated by the old palace, he put many places like that, tile-roofed houses, gazeboes and temples throughout the country in his works, so back then, artist Kim, Cheol-Wan was known as a master of the old palace. Currently, he is putting Mt. Geumgang so that he is showing the world we miss. He went there a long time ago but he is sending his own way of missing that place in expression since there is our spirits. Eventually, he is sublimating Mt. Geumgang, which is boasting off the most amazing landscape to his works. Also, his way of description is different. He is using the cotton cloth not Hwasunji with based on light-colored of Indian ink and added ceramic earth onto the cotton cloth to make it. Cotton cloth feels good and the harmony between earth and ink in colors attracted him. Like that. His works have been described by Baekpa Kim, Cheol-Wan’s own way by mixing with traditional and modern aspects at the same time. From a long time ago, artist Kim has realized both accomplishments like way of writing and expression on each side with painting and calligraphic works at the same time. “As for that painting and calligraphy, it is a root of our tradition. So, I would like to show something new that nobody didn’t express by seeking for a new art world, which is words and paintings are both met.” 

Always, ‘Baekpa’ Kim, Cheol-Wan is the artist who is working on various works in order to the very Korean and unique method. It was quite enough to make the audience exclaim from his new collaboration with calligraphy and painting. 

Baekpa Kim, Cheol-Wan took his only one way without being distracted for one fourth decades as an artist. His works is expressing out with artist own way in words as for methodology of expression based on the light-colored in Chinese ink. Certainly, out of four seasons in Korea, spring and fall are the main source in his work. Perhaps, to enjoy fully the brilliant colors of spring and fall out of nature’s four seasons and the fantastic mysterious feeling of nature Korean colors, he is considering intentionally or his own taste.

“I feel like I was born in a lazy person. However, until now, I have been living for 50 years and it is so rare to take a nap. No, I think I never did. I have to think of something and chasing after. I am lazy but I am greedy. I do write with a brush or carve the EM and then, if I think over something deeply, I used to get into the painting to wander. When I am even more serious about thinking, I go travelling alone. As I do some drawing without thinking, I would paint. I do much paint our hometown, our traditional house and old palace quite a lot. Still, it is not easy to transfer them into the paper. Someday, when I would get a bit more diligent, I will love to put everything I took memos into my work.”
