A new ear has come that the culture¡¤art industry plays a pivotal role when it comes to a country's competitiveness. That is why popular cultures such as movie, musical, play and concert are firmly established as a necessary part in the life of modern people. Along with this trend, there is a growing demand for a cultural space for them to enjoy their culture life then, one or two spaces have been opened here and there. It is pointed out that the performing art center which seems essential to a culture-advanced country is very rare in Korea.

For this reason, an attention is drawn to the role of Hanguk Performing Arts Center (HanPAC) which was launched in 2010.

The culture and arts industry has seen a drastic development by solving the absence of a performing arts center

In ten years ago, it was never easy to find department of theater studies in the domestic universities. However as Korean people get more interested in culture¡¤art, numerous theater studies and similar studies have been created nationally. Now approximately more than eighty departments of the studies have been newly established. In addition to these academic efforts to activate culture, local communities started to hold small and large sized festivals of theaters and plays occasionally. In 2010, Seoul Theater Olympics were open for forty five days. Like such, the physical growth of domestic performing arts has been seen around the nation.

In connection of these situations, former minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Yu In Chon at the end of his term ordered to establish Hanguk Performing Arts Center (HanPAC) in a bid to expand and develop performing arts. And as an initial president of the center, Choi Chy Rim took office who was a honorary professor at ChungAng University.

At present, HanPAC has been operated under the amalgamation of seven theaters including grand hall and small theatre of Arko Arts Theater, grand hall and small theatre of Daehangno Arts Theatre, Sangsang Naneum Theater within Soitdae Museum and more.

Five missions of 'HanPAC'

It seeks the most customized service for its audience as a hub of contemporary performing arts

2600 years ago, Aristotle listed in order six factors of a theater in poetics: it included plot(E), character, language, ideology, music, and spectacle in order. Then, post-modernism has occurred since the second world war, the order of six factors was reversed backward. In short, spectacle and music have been recognized as the most important factor; ideology and character became less important. In other words, it reflects that awareness of audiences has changed. According to president, Choi Chy Rim stated, in terms of performing arts, what is most considered is to reflect the contemporary factor.

"If there is no challenge toward an experimental play but remaining the tradition, performing arts are supposed to retreat. To develop, new experiments and tradition go hand in hand. I would say, last December there were two good examples such as <Tempest> directed by Oh Tae Seok and <A Colorfully Decorated Bier> by Im Hyeong Taek. These classic plays were represented with the contemporary directing method and made the audience surprised with amusement. Without a new challenge against the tradition, there are no performing arts in the contemporary era. Especially, performing arts are produces of aesthetics, intervention, philosophy and technology of the contemporary"

HanPAC takes responsibility for these challenges, setting up five missions to contribute to performing arts development: ¢º to systemically train the next generation performing artist ¢º to cultivate new concept performing arts work ¢º to operate a planning system per theme ¢º to activate sustainable performing arts ¢º to communicate and build-up partnership with governmen sponsored institutions at home and abroad. Furthermore, the missions are in response to the center's strong will to exactly read the contemporary cultural issues and adjust the eye level of audience. It is said that one of great achievements by HanPAC is to balance the old and new, the next generation artists by supporting the present senior performing artists. For the time being, the performing arts by artists such as Lee Ho Jae, Kim Geum Ji, Kim Jeong Hok, Oh Tae Seok, Im Young Woong have been supported by HanPAC.

The center sets its another aim that they will enhance 'Special Act on Daehangno' to create Daehangno as the world best 'performing arts town'. In short, they will make HanPAC as the campus of university students, adjacent theaters as a stage for the students to realize their dream, the whole Daehangno as a 'performing arts town'.

HanPAC is gearing up to organize a central place of the world performing arts which becomes one of hot attractions in Korea.

Choi Chy Rim, president of HanPAC graduated from Chungang Universityfrom with a major of theatre studies, obtained Master degree and Doctor degree of the same major  and at New York Unversity. Back in his old university, Mr Choi was employed as a professor. Since then, Mrs Choi served as a member of executive committee of Seoul Marginal Theater Festival, as a art director at the National Theater Company of Korea, president of HanPAC, chairman of Korean office at International Theater Arts Association, and member of World Theater Olympics.
