Located in the city of Dongtan, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, E2E English Education ( HYPERLINK "http://www.e2e-e.com" www.e2e-e.com) is an institute for children between the primary and middle school level. ¡°E2E¡± is an abbreviation of the meaning ¡°English to English¡± or ¡°Eat Double English¡±. These meanings imply that students will speak English with only English and that they will be able to learn quicker and effectively. The apple, being a traditional symbol for education, is also a part of the institute¡¯s logo. This symbolizes that English should be learnt in a positive, fun manner, similar to how one takes a happy bite on a delicious apple. Hoping to become a new paradigm for teaching English in Korea, E2E has broken the traditional approach of English education in Korea, and has already been noted for it. The institute aims to teach the language through a natural environment instead of the intensive cramming method that most institutes in Korea follow. The effectiveness of such a different approach has already spread, making E2E a popular choice for parents. PowerKorea went to visit the institute and principal Nancy (Na Young) Kim, curious of why they had been garnering so much attention.


Korean to Korean, English to English

¡°When students go to study abroad or immigrate to English speaking countries, most are forced to go through the ESL program (English as a Second Language) due to their inefficient knowledge of English. When they are ready to converse to a certain level, they start to take regular courses such as music, art, and physical education. When their English has improved a bit more, they are allowed to take courses that involve proficient mastery of the language such as Social Studies or History. To take a regular English course requires much more effort than other required school classes, which is why the ESL program is crucially important. Thus, E2E only teaches students in English to get them familiar with the language. Not only in classes, but students are require to speak English in the whole building. For young children, conversing in English is crucially important to becoming comfortable with the language. In early stages, conversation needs to be familiarized before writing is fully developed. Our classes are very conversation heavy, therefore, early students only spend ten minutes on their writing every class.¡± Kim states that the institute is based on more of a Western school system than the traditional English institute. 


¡°Boring¡± is not in the curriculum. E2E is all about excitement and fun.

In E2E, it¡¯s rare to find teachers lecturing dull children. Students are not bombarded with grammar tests, level up tests, assignments that requires parents¡¯ help, or exercises that are solved like math problems, which all lead to immense stress. They are, however, given pop quizzes from what they had learned, and are ten minutes in length. Through the well-organized library system, students are also required to read a minimum of two books a month, stressing the importance of reading. To motivate students to read, E2E gives out prizes along with what they call ¡®The Bookworm Award¡¯. This prepares students for essay writing and discussion in the future. Students are also shown cartoons or movies to help them open their ears to the unfamiliar language. Kim states, ¡°Children are still children. They lose motivation if they lose interest, therefore, they do not find joy in learning english. Solving English grammar like a bunch of math questions is not how we teach ourselves our own language. It¡¯s not possible to effectively teach Korean, or in fact, any other language in such a mechanical approach. Therefore, we try to limit the question solving approach of learning grammar and vocabulary, and instead apply it through conversation and games. Grammar time is when students have the most fun.¡± The native instructors who apply to E2E are trained to teach their classes in such methods. If they can not familiarize themselves with this style of teaching in a period of three months, they will unfortunately get discharged.


No meaning without the satisfaction of students and parents

Parents who first enter E2E are very surprised, but at the same time, are worried about such an unfamiliar approach to English education. This is because the parents¡¯ are confused on whether their child is going to study or play. However, students attending E2E started to show self-studying habits and a desire to read books. After several months, parents were surprised at how much their children had improved and understood why the institute had taken such a different approach to teaching English. Kim, the mastermind behind such an effective teaching system, is a Korean-Canadian with experience in learning and teaching overseas. She immigrated to Canada in elementary school and finished her education there to the university level. Wanting to be a Geography teacher as a student, she eventually changed her goal to teach English to Korean students, just like she was once taught the language herself. Kim returned to Korea and gained experience from teaching at other institutes and corporate companies. Teaching at these places, Kim noticed that the biggest problem was that English education in Korea failed to successfully help students converse with other English speakers. She realized that English should be taught completely in English, and that the learning process couldn¡¯t be dull and stressful. Therefore, her curriculum of teaching English in a natural, fun, and open learning environment was created, which resulted to be much more effective then learning in a closed, boring, and repetitive one. 


No plans to expand to a franchise company

Kim decided that she did not wish to flaunt the institute¡¯s success by turning it into a huge franchise. She revealed that several offers have come in, all declined by herself. The reason was that if E2E were to expand, she would have to give the principal position to someone with a similar background as her with equal amounts of experience. One would also need to  possess a strong mindset for teaching and also the ability to fluently speak english. The position of principal will not just be a figure behind a chair, but a teacher as well. With this in mind, she strongly believed that the institute¡¯s approach would be negatively effected, as big franchises would branch off into different styles of management and teaching methods, breaking away from E2E¡¯s true intentions. Kim stated, ¡°If we were to expand, we will  create branch campuses that I could manage myself with total control.¡±

It is getting increasingly hard to send children overseas to study. Money is a big issue, and many situations lead to the whole family moving overseas, except the father, who is the breadwinner of the family. This forcefully breaks off families, making it an issue in the society. An institute that has a principal with a burning passion for teaching, an highly effective teaching system, and a great teaching staff will provide similar or greater learning than that of studying overseas. E2E, possessing all these qualities, became a hot issue and was featured on ¡®MTN¡¯s Kang Sung Bum¡¯s Hot Issue Magazine¡¯ last month.

Children in the Korean society are receiving enough stress as it is, and E2E is fighting to help minimize that stress. Like their motto says, English needs to be taught in a fun and educational manner to learn efficiently. We hope their approach to proper education will blossom and influence others in the future.
