Prof. Heo, working as a poet and critic at the forefront of the Korean literary world,  has emerged as the leader of young Korean writers.

She emphasizes that literature should start again with searching for "the meaning of life", in this age where knowledge of literature dominates over literature itself.

Now, let's look deeply into the various aspects of her life as a writer and educator. 


Life Dedicated to Perception and Expression 

Prof. Heo was born in 1966 in Sanchung Gyungsangnam Do, and grew up as a country girl, catching snails in the Gyungho river and running about the strawberry fields of her hometown. 

It was her grandfather, a history professor, and father, a professor of English literature,  and many other relatives who influenced her and affected her ability as a writer. In addition to her family background, all the prestigious schools she attended also served well as the cradle of her literary emotions and thoughts.  

She said "Writing has been everything for me since I was thirteen." When in Sookmyung high school, she worked as a student journalist, and even had the honor of writing a congratulatory poem, beating other writers who were famous and senior to her.

Prof. Heo started her literary career in 1987, while studying at the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Dongguk University, through the "Award for Rookie of Korean Literature". Since then, she has conducted many literary activities with enthusiasm, including the winning of the first prize at the Annual Spring Literary Critique Contest sponsored by the Joongang newspaper. 


Poet, Literary Critic, Poetry Culture Activist, And Challenging Researcher on Literature

In 2007, she transferred from Dongguk University to Korea Cyber University to serve as a full-time professor at the Department of Literary Creation. 

In 2008, she ran the risk of changing the Department of Literary Creation into that of  Broadcasting Literary Creation, in order to provide students with a stepping stone to a new literary challenge. The new department, complete with all the Broadcasting Literary Creation courses, later became recognized in Korea as a melting pot of literary creation.

 She said that while receiving 2 Excellent Teaching Awards during her tenure, she could brush up on her sense with which to break through the age of Unlimited Media, with the help of the experiences she gained there by shifting back and forth from online to offline education under the state-of-the-art cyber systems.

In 1997, she co-developed with poet Jang Gyunggi the "Blood of Illusion", the first video anthology in Korea, and has exhibited or showed them 10 times.  

In 2007, she served as Chairman of Digital Poetry Culture Movement Festival, held for 1 year in the Hyundai Ipark Mall. 

In 2006, she was invited to the 1st Seoul Young Writers festival, sponsored by  Korean Literature Translation Institute, as a poet representing Korea. Many of her works have already been translated and introduced overseas. 

Her challenging spirit is also shining bright in her study on literature. Her research papers on CheoYong, a shock to the field of our humane studies, were introduced at many international academic meetings, and published in paper books and DVDs as well, getting the attention of the media in and outside the country.

"Everyone has a seed sown for his or her dreams. I am working with students to help them fulfill their literary talents and dreams. I will be happy if I can advise them on how to make their precious dreams burgeon." she said. 


We need a new approach to today's literature. 

¡°In this age, we need to pay attention to the essence of literature." That means literature should thoroughly start with humans and raise a fort to protect human value, which suggests the understanding of literature includes factors, more essential than technology, science, knowledge, etc.

In her poem titled "A Lyric for the Enemies", we find the words ¡°I would not have touched a poem if its words could not burn up an effigy." The poem sings about  radical resistance to verbose language and corrupt logic of perception.

As we can see from her work, she has been much help in raising important issues on  Korean literature, and restructuring the Korean literary circles.

"The world always needs activists. For change always begins with a few revolutionaries who act on the field." With the maxim in mind, she is still sharpening her pencil and looking for words that can change the world.

 

A brief summary of her career is as follows:

She completed the Korean Literary Course at Dongguk University and also earned a Ph.D. in literature at graduate school, Dongguk University; wrote collections of poems and critiques; and also published many scholarly research journals, story collection, papers, and columns. She is currently a professor of Broadcasting Literary Creation at Korea Cyber University, and an editor of 'Poet's Notebook', and 'Kookhak'.
