문학 그 자체에 답이 있다
이론의 거품을 제거하고 본질에 접근해야
문학 연구자이자 시인, 평론가로 한국 문단의 최전방에서 활동해온 허혜정 교수. 한국문단에서 ‘젊은 문학인’의 대표주자로 자리매김되어온 그는, 문학지식이 작품을 너머 행세하는 시대에 문학은 인간적인 의미망, 더 넓게는 생명현상에 대한 천착으로부터 새로이 출발해야 한다고 강조한다. 그가 한국사이버대학교 방송문예창작학과에 둥지를 튼 지 6년. 교육자이자 문학인으로서 다각적인 행보를 지속해온 그의 삶 속으로 들어가 본다.
문학의 피, ‘표현과 인식’에 바쳐진 삶
허혜정 교수는 1966년 경남 산청에서 출생해 경호강에서 고둥을 잡고 산청 딸기밭을 쏘다니며 ‘자연의 아이’로 성장했다. 사학교수였던 할아버지와 영문학 교수였던 아버지를 비롯해 수많은 인문학자를 배출해온 가풍은 그녀의 문학적 재능을 꽃피우는 데 축복과도 같은 토양이었다.
허 교수의 가계는 경남일대의 명문가로 통한다. 고조부의 서재였던 ‘용강정사’와 ‘임이정’은 구한말‘파리장서’독립운동의 싹이 튼 곳으로서 현재 문화재로 지정되어 있다. 허씨 문중의 애국애족적 가풍 뿐 아니라 70년대 민족주의 특별시범학교였던 장충초등학교, 여류문사들을 대거 배출해온 숙명여고, 한국문단 최고의 문맥을 자랑하는 동국대학교는 그의 문학적 감성과 사유를 길러낸 산실이다.
허 교수는 13세 이후에는 글을 쓰는 것이 가장 중요한 일이었다고 말한다. 초등학교 시절 시를 쓰기 시작했고, 중학교 시절 ‘표현과 인식’을 생의 목표로 삼았다고 한다. 학창시절 문예대회를 휩쓸던 그는 학생잡지에서 종종 원고청탁을 받을 정도로 꽤 유명한 글꾼이었다. 숙명여고 재학시절에는 학생기자로 활동했고, 쟁쟁한 원로선배 문인들의 몫이던 졸업 축시를 쓰는 영광을 얻기도 했다.
허혜정 교수는 동국대 국문과 재학시절인 1987년, 한국문학 신인작품상을 통해 시단에 등단했다. 그 이후 1995년 현대시 평론 당선, 1997년 중앙일보 신춘문예 평론 당선, 최근 <젊은 평론가상> 수상에 이르기까지 우리 문단의 최전선에서 왕성한 활동을 펼치고 있다.
시인, 평론가, 시문화운동가, 도전적인 문학 연구자
허교수는 시인과 평론가로 활동하며 수많은 대학에서 강의를 했다. 그는 동국대학교 강의전담교수로 재직하던 2007년 지금의 한국사이버대학교 문예창작학과 전임교수로 이직했다. 2008년 그는 학생들에게 새로운 문학적 도전의 발판을 만들어주기 위해 문예창작학과를 방송문예창작학과로 특성화하는 모험을 감행했다. 국내 관련학과 중에서 유일하게 방송문학과정을 온전히 구축하고 있는 이 학과는 문화시대를 선도하는 창작의 용광로로 최근 큰 주목을 받고 있다.
재직기간 중 훌륭한 강의로 <우수교수상>을 2회 수상하기도 한 허 교수는 최첨단 사이버 시스템 속에서 온라인과 오프라인을 오가는 교육경험, 21세기의 무한미디어 시대를 돌파할 수 있는 문화감각을 새로이 할 수 있었다고 말한다.
현재『시인수첩』과 『국학자료원』의 편집위원으로도 활동하고 있는 그는, 1997년 한국 최초의 영상시집 『몽상의 피』를 장경기 시인과 공동개발하여 10여회 전시,상영한 바 있으며 2007년 현대아이파크몰에서 1년간 개최된 디지털 시문화운동 축제위원장으로도 활동했다. 2006년 한국문학 번역원 주최 제1회 Seoul Young Writers festival에 한국 대표 시인으로 초청되는 등 젊은 시인으로서의 대표성을 인정받아온 그녀의 작품들은 해외에도 적지 않게 번역, 소개되고 있다.
그녀의 도전적인 기질은 문학연구에서도 빛을 발한다. 우리 인문학계에 신선한 학술적 충격을 던졌던 그녀의 처용’관련 논문들은 국제학회에서 수차 소개되고, 종이책과 DVD 저술로 동시 발간되어 국내외 언론의 뜨거운 조명을 받기도 했다. 이러한 다양한 경험들이 문학교육에 풍부한 자양분이 되었음은 물론이다.
“누구에게나 꿈을 움트게 하는‘씨앗’같은 것이 있습니다. 저는 학생들의 못자리가 된다는 생각으로 학생들의 문학적 재능과 꿈을 키워낼 수 있도록 함께 노력합니다. 학생들의 고귀한 꿈을 움트게 해줄 수 있는 조언자가 될 수 있다는 것은 큰 행복입니다.”
오늘날의 문학, 새로운 접근이 필요하다
“오늘날 문학의 커다란 문제점은, 추상적이고 메마른 공론을 일삼는 지식조류가 창작을 압도하는 현상이 아닌가 합니다. 주객이 전도된 것입니다. 문학의 본질에 주목하는 담론이 필요한 시대입니다.”
문학이 철저히 인간에서 출발하며, 인간적 가치를 사수하기 위한 마지막 보루라는 사실에 대해 새롭게 인식할 필요가 있다는 것이다. 적어도 문학에 대한 이해는 기술이나 과학, 지식 같은 것보다 더 심층적인 요소들에 대한 이해를 포함해야 한다는 주장이다.
그의 시 <적들을 위한 서정시> 중에는 “꼭두각시 하나 불태울 수 없는 말이라면 시 같은 건 손대지도 않았다”는 싯구가 등장한다. 언어의 거품과 타락한 인식논리에 대한 근본적인 저항을 노래한 시이다. 그녀의 작품이 그러하듯, 그녀는 부실한 문학적 공준(公準)과 문학의 위기가 심각하게 논의되는 현실에서 한국문학의 중요한 이슈를 제기하고 한국문단의 지도를 짜는 데 일조해 왔다.
세상은 늘 운동가를 필요로 한다. 현장에서 비평하고 행동하는 소수의 혁명가로부터 변화가 시작되기 때문이다. 펜이 칼보다 강하다는 잠언을 굳이 들먹이지 않더라도 우리는 그것을 잘 알고 있다. 그는 오늘도 펜을 날카롭게 가다듬고 세상을 바꿀 언어를 찾고 있는 중이다.

She emphasizes that literature should start again with searching for "the meaning of life", in this age where knowledge of literature dominates over literature itself.
Now, let's look deeply into the various aspects of her life as a writer and educator.
Life Dedicated to Perception and Expression
Prof. Heo was born in 1966 in Sanchung Gyungsangnam Do, and grew up as a country girl, catching snails in the Gyungho river and running about the strawberry fields of her hometown.
It was her grandfather, a history professor, and father, a professor of English literature, and many other relatives who influenced her and affected her ability as a writer. In addition to her family background, all the prestigious schools she attended also served well as the cradle of her literary emotions and thoughts.
She said "Writing has been everything for me since I was thirteen." When in Sookmyung high school, she worked as a student journalist, and even had the honor of writing a congratulatory poem, beating other writers who were famous and senior to her.
Prof. Heo started her literary career in 1987, while studying at the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Dongguk University, through the "Award for Rookie of Korean Literature". Since then, she has conducted many literary activities with enthusiasm, including the winning of the first prize at the Annual Spring Literary Critique Contest sponsored by the Joongang newspaper.
Poet, Literary Critic, Poetry Culture Activist, And Challenging Researcher on Literature
In 2007, she transferred from Dongguk University to Korea Cyber University to serve as a full-time professor at the Department of Literary Creation.
In 2008, she ran the risk of changing the Department of Literary Creation into that of Broadcasting Literary Creation, in order to provide students with a stepping stone to a new literary challenge. The new department, complete with all the Broadcasting Literary Creation courses, later became recognized in Korea as a melting pot of literary creation.
She said that while receiving 2 Excellent Teaching Awards during her tenure, she could brush up on her sense with which to break through the age of Unlimited Media, with the help of the experiences she gained there by shifting back and forth from online to offline education under the state-of-the-art cyber systems.
In 1997, she co-developed with poet Jang Gyunggi the "Blood of Illusion", the first video anthology in Korea, and has exhibited or showed them 10 times.
In 2007, she served as Chairman of Digital Poetry Culture Movement Festival, held for 1 year in the Hyundai Ipark Mall.
In 2006, she was invited to the 1st Seoul Young Writers festival, sponsored by Korean Literature Translation Institute, as a poet representing Korea. Many of her works have already been translated and introduced overseas.
Her challenging spirit is also shining bright in her study on literature. Her research papers on CheoYong, a shock to the field of our humane studies, were introduced at many international academic meetings, and published in paper books and DVDs as well, getting the attention of the media in and outside the country.
"Everyone has a seed sown for his or her dreams. I am working with students to help them fulfill their literary talents and dreams. I will be happy if I can advise them on how to make their precious dreams burgeon." she said.
We need a new approach to today's literature.
“In this age, we need to pay attention to the essence of literature." That means literature should thoroughly start with humans and raise a fort to protect human value, which suggests the understanding of literature includes factors, more essential than technology, science, knowledge, etc.
In her poem titled "A Lyric for the Enemies", we find the words “I would not have touched a poem if its words could not burn up an effigy." The poem sings about radical resistance to verbose language and corrupt logic of perception.
As we can see from her work, she has been much help in raising important issues on Korean literature, and restructuring the Korean literary circles.
"The world always needs activists. For change always begins with a few revolutionaries who act on the field." With the maxim in mind, she is still sharpening her pencil and looking for words that can change the world.

She completed the Korean Literary Course at Dongguk University and also earned a Ph.D. in literature at graduate school, Dongguk University; wrote collections of poems and critiques; and also published many scholarly research journals, story collection, papers, and columns. She is currently a professor of Broadcasting Literary Creation at Korea Cyber University, and an editor of 'Poet's Notebook', and 'Kookhak'.
