Expressed on a canvas the hidden desires of women

Writer Ji-yeon Son

If one walks in Gangnam, Apgujeong or Itaewon where fashionistas gather and are known to lead fashion,  we now find women with similarly shaped noses and eyes and with look alike designer bags unlike the olden days when they were full of personality.

For whom to these women get plastic surgery and dwell on those designer bags? It is still questionable whether these values were created by society or themselves.

Writer Ji-yeon Son describes women's desires and the hidden truth in them from a woman's perspective.

Need to think about a woman's identity

Son claims that a condition for a woman to be happy is to consider each other. Although she herself is a woman, she asks herself and studies what it means to be a woman in modern society. Going beyond from just watching women as a writer, she is philosophically studying them. She compares the representative female role models of the Republic of Korea as embodied in Sinsaimdang, a motherly figure who was an outstanding artist, with Wu-dong Eoh and Jin-i Hwang, beautifully decorated women with many sex scandals, of the Joseon Dynasty who contemporary Korean men have picked as the best women to analyze the conditions for women to be accepted in this society which she expresses in her works.

Between the traditional female role models of Sinsaimdang and Wu-dong Eoh, many other female role models exist, but she compares just the two and asks what kind of woman is more accepted in modern society to provide an opportunity for those reading her books to think of the answer. That is, everyone pursues the role model of Sinsaimdang, but we have come to favor beautiful women like Wu-dong Eoh and Jin-i Hwang to realize that the first condition and standard used to evaluate a woman has from the past been beauty.

Are women indeed pursuing beauty for themselves? The answer to this question needs to be thought of individually. As we can find in Son's representative work, "Stand Head and Shoulders Above Others," a crane in the midst of chickens means the extraordinary among the ordinary and is used to mean well but it may work to form a sense of alienation.

Women's desire to pursue beauty may be good, but can on the other hand also make people frown. Everyone wants to be the best and pursues the greatest beauty, but its value may differ depending on the thought behind such pursuit. Do women pursue beauty from being conscious of men and other people or as a means to develop oneself from considering beauty as the greatest value? Depending on why they pursue beauty, the  worthiness of the value may be judged.

Pursuing the Korean or the opposite

On the silk-covered canvas, Asian beauty is calmly laid out. Asian notions, ideology and philosophy as well as Western analytical thinking have been boldly applied on modern painting. It is even shocking. Psychological mystery, that is, the dream and longing to escape from reality has been expressed psychologically, secularly and surrealistically on a folding screen using popular, surreal, and new figuration painting methods.

In addition, the deformed circle in the image of a moon in the circular canvas and folding screen has intentionally, decoratively and extravagantly expressed the Easter and Western cultures together with the small cosmos, starting point and former life of Buddhism. Her fierce and satirical criticisms of the female role model shows up in her artworks, but the outer beauty of her artworks is at times captivating. Maybe because of this, her works have the secret power of making one think and look back on oneself. Furthermore, expressing the face of a woman with a flower and dressing her with an extravagant dress may be considered the representative comparison of the beauty women seek with the female role model she thinks of.

The world has made female role models as such and women have changed accordingly. But true love gives everything one has before asking something in return. Then, women would pursue true beauty instead of outwardly beauty and seek internal development.

Just as Karl Jaspers said, "A human being's greatest expression is love," if the greatest expression is true, it may be possible to pursue the perfection of the female role model Son thinks of. As such, Son completes her works by approaching them in a new completely different way from general notions and is flawless as a representative 21st century female writer and painter of the Republic of Korea.
