Visual contents are in the center of attention as technologies are marching forward in an unprecedented speed. Visual contents are used in many devices and platforms such as laptops, smartphones, digital twin, metaverse, etc.

Display market in particular has seen a significant move and micro display among them is in the center of the buzz recently. HMD devices are needed to use VR and AR and micro display provides smaller and clearer images. However, micro display has a drawback when it comes to production and facilities from which many domestic companies turn their backs. Yet May Display proved itself to have the world£ªs first 4K2K LCOS micro display mass production system in 2019.

Putting pros of LCD and DLP in one display

Introducing LCOS Display

As a micro display company, May Display has been developing, making and selling LCOS Panel which is the core part of AR, VR, HUD and Holographic.

LCOS stands for Liquid Crystal on Silicon. This less than 2” micro display realizes high resolution and projects images by reflecting external light sources after forming drive elements on the semiconductor substrates. LCOS is easy to apply HMD (Head Mount Display) but challenges are yet to be made in the domestic market.

May Display focuses on LCOS because of its advantages. When it comes to micro display, MicroOLED, MicroLED or DLP is generally used. MicroOLED has a simple composition, small and light, but when it comes to AR applied outside, it does not give luminance that can secure visibility and also it is difficult to use in holographic. LCOS compensates these drawbacks by combining advantages of DLP and LCD. While MicroOLED and MicroLED adjust colors with 3 RGB sub pixels of 1 pixel, LCOS realize colors with single pixel which makes it narrower panel gaps with high dense forms for clearer images.

So much so, May Display boasts experts with more than 20 years of experience in LCOS not to mention its cutting edge automated production facilities. Thanks to these devoted experts and technical prowess, May Display succeeded mass production of Real 4K2K LCOS Panel alongside producing the world’s only high quality LCOS Holographic Panel.

From AR and VR to HUD

7100ppi to realize 4K

May Display calls itself as a LCOS Total Company with global competitiveness in wafer design and panel productions. From AR, VR, HUD and holographic devices to inspection equipment, optics engines and LCOS Panel, the company is making a strong presence in the field.

3D motion sickness occurs during the operation of 3D graphic games and contents especially when visibility becomes narrow which leads to imbalance of body and visual information. It is frequently occurs when it comes to HMD where the display monitor is only visible to eye. May Display solved this problem with high resolution display that goes well with 4K contents. CEO Woosung Baek explains “MicroOLED is around 1440ppi. May Display’s LCOS Display, on the other hand, realizes up to 7100ppi by adjusting pixels with mini LCD method.” May Display’s HMD also uses laser illuminant which saves power, and it does not require focusing thanks to multi-focul virtual images, and it gives fast respond phase modulation technologies.

From digital holograms to inspection equipment

Winning K-Display 2023

May Display’s LCOS Display realizes high performance modulation type holographic images. It also improves performance of inspection equipment used in production lines and detects defects of products faster and more accurate.

The LCOS Display obtained ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The company secured the world’s first 4K panel production facilities in 2019 and developed the world’s first 4K full color hologram kit in 2021. May Display boasts its technical achievements at the CES, the Seoul VR/AR Expo, the MWC, etc, and drew orders from China. The company also won the grand prize at the 20th K-Display with its excellent 4K2K LCOS Micro Display Panel.
