The pandemic has changed one thing in the way people travel: they prefer relatively unknown places than the popular.

Dongyeol Lee, CEO of Saminhaeng, is an island travel agency nestled on Yokji Island in Tongyeong City. He and his wife moved to the island 12 years ago and worked as farmers growing and selling sweet potato and tangerine corn and bread and cakes.

“I actually was born and grew in Tongyeong but I had this desire to link the cities to countrysides. I organized a number of meetings since 2008 and in 2010 moved to the current island with my wife to grow and sell potato and tangerine-themed food. I also wanted to spread beautiful islands and the sea around Tongyeong to more people. As the city has 41 habited islands and 109 inhabited islands, I thought it might be a good idea to run a island travel agency. Thus opened was Saminhaeng and it probably is the first island-specialized travel agency based on an island.” says Lee.

Saminhaeng takes environment seriously and the guiding often involves importance of protecting our beautiful land and sea. As a culture and art lover, Lee also is holding many events and programs including a poet school, an island film festival and a concert which are part of the island touring. The Sea Waste Concert especially is receiving positive reviews as Lee gives out free tickets of the concert to people who collect 10kg of sea waste.

Lee’s Island Traveler’s Platform House is used as an accommodation for travelers and the second house is being built to meet the increasing demand.

“I’m thinking of growing the island travel to the south coastline towards Busan and Ulsan to and from Tongyeong. It is meaningful for me to run a tour themed not only on beautiful islands but also on protecting environment.” <PowerKorea>
