“What a life!” “What a fate!” “Why me!” are those we commonly let out without knowingly when things go unfavorable to us. Whether it is fun or serious, people in South Korea tend to pay a visit to a fortuneteller if unfortunate things occur again and again. Based on the one’s time, date, month and year of the birth (four pillars of destiny), the fortuneteller gives analysis and advice for your supposed-to-be-career on a small fee. 

Jeonju Hanok Village is where a fortuneteller Daekeu Lee is practicing his art. The village is the largest of the nation in number of traditional Korean houses which are over 700 alongside 20 cultural assets. Fortunetelling aside, visitors are encouraged to visit to the history museum in the village, the Choi Myung Hee Literature Museum (Lee nearly completed his epic novel ‘Honbul’), the calligraphy center and the traditional fan exhibition hall. When fun’s done, you are now ready to pay a visit to Lee who will give an advice or two for the better of your life. 

Lee says that one’s four pillars of destiny is unchangeable. One more thing we should take into account is that happiness is entirely depends on individuals. For example, some values fame and power more than health and vice versa. But this value preference, Lee says, comes from no other than one’s four pillars of destiny.

“Those who do not have luck of wealth in their four pillars of destiny are likely to spend their time seeking it. It is interesting that I commonly found monks and fathers do not have luck of offspring in their four pillars of destiny. What I want to say is that we can be happy when we live according to our four pillars of destiny rather than seeking the luck we do not have. In other words, regardless rich or poor one can truly be happy when the one follows this. The four pillars of destiny is a law of nature and we are part of nature like we lighten our clothes in summer and thicken them in winter.” explains Lee. 

However, Lee points out the three fundamentally important elements: job, spouse and offspring. “If you are destined to be a singer, you better be a singer to be likely successful. Then follows spouse which you will likely to meet the right one in your profession or around. And lastly, offspring is the result of both of you and you better arrange a good day to give a birth.” says Lee. 

However, he gives an important tip, that the fate takes only around 2 to 3 percent while your determination and hard work takes 7 to 8 percent to have what you want. But that determination and hard work should better be advised before you have walked too far away from it without yourself knowing it because you cannot change what have you been doing most of your life: It is too late to start over.
