According the UN Population Report 2015, the number of people on earth will reach 11.2 billion by 2100. As the population keeps increasing, it is important to secure food to feed in advance while the productivity of grains and cattle are limited.

Darkling ground beetle sausage
Established at Okcheon County, North Chungcheong Province in 2008, Global Food is a company making Korean sausages with edible insects. Global Food developed so called ‘functional Korean sausages’ by using mulberry leaves and obtained a patent in 2014. In 2017, the company developed darkling ground beetle sausages in cooperation with Cheongju Agricultural Technology Center and also obtained a patent.

Normally, Korean sausages are made mainly with lard so we cannot call it 100% healthy. Waking up his eye on this, CEO Park started using edible insects that are rich in protein and unsaturated fat. “Korean sausages are oily and greasy but darkling ground beetle sausages, for example, have clean and savory taste. We have a facility in Gangoe-myeon in Cheongju and produce rice crusts and pork cutlets alongside Korean sausages.”

6 herbs based Korean sausage
These healthy edible insect Korean sausages were aired on Channel A, TV Choson, KBS News and CJB Cheonju and CEO Park is contributing his knowledge on the Korean edible insect industry at various symposiums.

Gathering his knowledge and experience one more time, he developed 6 herbs based Korean sausage and some of the herbs are Geumsicho, Geumhwagyu and plantain. The sausage is to be released within this year.

“We also opened the first herbal Korean sausage restaurant in Eumseong County and we are ambitious to grow the business as a franchise. Meanwhile, we will keep introducing healthy edible and herbal based Korean sausages.”
