Turning unprofitable to profitable
GADF is a company that runs duty free shop in Gunsan International Passenger Terminal. What makes this mid-sized company in the region remarkable is this: the duty free shop in the terminal suffered from bad performance for a long time due to poor customer services and management; CEO Jeon Sung-su of GADF took over the business in 2014 and turned it into a promising business the next year with a trade surplus of 4.3 billion won (US $3.8M). The sales increased yearly 6 billion to 9.3 billion won afterwards and hit record 12 billion won last year. 

As soon as Jeon took over the business, he focused on finding the cause of the bad performance and that was poor customer services and management. So he focused on improving the services while building effective management systems. 

“The most frequent users of the terminal are small traders coming from China. They are very sensitive about even tiny bit change of price and were in need of shifting their goods from the terminal to the ship. So I started with providing umbrellas for them when raining and carried their goods from the terminal to ship and vice versa for free” says Jeon.

His attention to detail in business did not stop there: he saw the Chinese tradition of giving cash gift in red envelope on Chinese New Year; he gave out a voucher in red envelope for them to enjoy free bath at Byeonsan Haesuzzim; or a voucher for free mooncake which is commonly enjoyed among Chinese; he also gave out a box of dried seaweed for free. His idea and action finally harvested good fruits: 70% revisit rate of the terminal users alongside remarkable sales growth. 

Using advantage of local business
This year, Gunsan International Passenger Terminal saw one more liner (20,000 tons) sailing from China with full of Chinese tourists and small traders. This means for Jeon is to make the most of his business acumen and infrastructure of the city to boost up regional tourism and trade. 

“Gunsan is regarded as a bridgehead of international passenger ships but is rather poor when it comes to tourism. Duty free shop in this respect is a good tool to boost regional tourism. In other words, we already have planted a profitable vegetable so we need to take care of it with utmost attention to detail if it should harvest a good fruit.”

Jeon is a man of strategy. He knows how to connect one business to another to create synergy effect. For example, he used Byeonsan Haesuzzim, opened in 2016, as a unique resting place for Chinese tourists and small traders. Byeonsan Haesuzzim draws the clean seawater of the west coast and heats it up to 60 to 70°C to be used for bath; phyllite (stone) and sweet wormwood are used as accompaniments for the benefit of improving diabetes, migraine, skin trouble, arthritis and stress. 

The seawater bathhouse (50°C) also contains around 100 kinds minerals that are good for hardening of arteries, high blood pressure, lumbago, athlete’s foot, constipation and osteoporosis.

Alongside this excellent bath, visitors can enjoy glamping, lunge, restaurant and supermarket. Seeing the explosive response from the visitors, CEO Jeon is planning to secure 10 more rooms in near future.

Contribution to local economy
GADF is running a number of cooperative firms: Byeonsan Haesuzzim, Jeonbuk Environmental Farming Association Corporation, and Wansan Jujo (brewery). 

The Corporation was established in 2002 and has grown as a representative organization in Gunsan through eco-friendly rice production; it was chosen as one of the 10 farming corporations housed in the agricultural cluster within the Saemangeum reclaimed land; Jeon is planning to build production, distribution, processing and export facilities on the 24ha land. 

Wansan Jujo’s ‘Cheondung Sori’ makgeolli (rice wine) is unique in terms of fermentation method: it is fermented in red clay room – the first and only case in Korea. It uses the quality rice of the Corporation and the bedrock water 180 meter underground in the region. It won the grand prize at the 2007 Korea Makgeolli Show by beating 600 rival brands. 

It is sold in the duty free shop in Gunsan International Passenger Terminal and CEO Jeon is ambitious to pioneer Chinese market soon.

Contribution to community
Jeon has been donating part of profits to people in need for many years. He also generously throws out scholarship to the Gunsan Educational Development Foundation and promised to notate more than 1% of operation profits to the local community. 

“Generating profit is very important for business. But returning back the profit to society is as equally important as that. GADF is a private company but it functions like a public company in a way. This is because a company in a region can only grow through cooperation and support of the local society. I’m determined to keep engaging in these meaningful volunteer activities for as long as I can do.”
