Chicago the musical has marked 22 years of its splendid performance on Broadway New York since it was premiered in 1996. The Korean premiere took place in 2000 and has been ongoing for the last 18 years marking the season 14 as of this year through a total of 961 performances with average 85% booking rate. It is meaningful that June 23 marked its 1,000th performance celebrated by Choi Jung-won, IVY, Nam Kyeong-ju and Kim Gyeong-sun and newly added Kolleen Park (Velma Kelly) and Kim Ji-woo (Roxie Hart). Also notables are Ahn Jae-wook (Billy Flynn) and Kim Young-joo (Mama Morton).
A brief history and numbers
Chicago was first staged by Bob Fosse in 1975 and was revived by the director Walter Bobbie and the choreographer Ann Reinking in 1996. It has been on the stage for 8,835 times as of February 18, 2018 and is known as the longest running musical of all time in the US. It has swept prizes in 55 categories from the Tony, Drama Desk, Grammy and Oliver Awards and staged at 490 cities in 36 countries with more than 32,500 performances that have drawn more than 31 million audiences.
