Innovation in recovery of vision
Established in 2014, the vision recovery wearable device startup ‘Edenlux’ is creating a much expectation among those who need a better eye sight despite the term ‘vision therapy’ is still unfamiliar with them. In fact, the vision therapy has been actively researched and developed in many advanced countries but the lack of optometrists in Korea has put it behind. “Actually, Korea has no official system to foster optometrists at all. Optometrists stand between ophthalmologists and opticians in advanced countries. The reason I’m telling you this is because the vision therapy is a study started from optometry that interprets our eyes as muscle tissues” explains Park. Adopting the method, the idea of Edenlux is to improve eye sight based on refractive power and degree of definition with focus on the ‘quality of the images’. Thus developed was an IoT-driven digital device. “The device enables you to exercise your eye in watching the TV or reading the newspaper. 5 to 10 minute regular exercise trains your eye to recover the lost part of your eye sight or prevent it from worsening at least. It is unique in its own terms and is expected to be compatible with related apps and games contents which will soon follow.”

Development and release
Lux means ‘light’ in Latin thus applied to the brand name by Park. Edenlux developed the product in cooperation with the Korea Electric Research and Testing Institute and secured a patient for the technology on transfer; Edenlux obtained 12 patients in total including one in the US, 6 as PCT and 5 in Korea; it is notable that Edenlux is the sole company to have a patent relating to vision test and training digital devices; these devices are expected to realize customized training through data gathering and analysis and Edenlux is to release the products late this year. “Ophthalmologists and opticians are the main bodies to sell the products through in cooperation. They have professional knowledge about eye and eye sight and the people who visit them certainly have a will to improve their sights. It is also noteworthy that more and more people are being aware of the importance of prevention than dependence on surgeries and treatments afterwards which has been the common case in the past.”
