“Dongyeobigo makes clear of the borders of the Korean territory”
Jang Yoon-suk, Holder of ‘Dongyeobigo (Reference Atlas of Korea)’

Korea is located at the edge of Northeast Asia. Despite its relatively small land, the Koreans have kept thier own history, language and culture. Yet the land and the people were devastated by constant invasions of the neighboring countries: from Sui dynasty and Tang dynasty in China, twice from Mongolia and twice from Japan; and the invasions are still going on in different forms. This is the reason that the importance of ‘Dongyeobigo’ – the atlas- is ever increasing. The atlas (authorship and date are unknown) was found in June, 1998 and is one of the clear evidences to the Japan’s baseless claim on Dokdo and the China’s move to permanent inclusion of the northern territory of the Korean Peninsula. The atlas is known to a pair of ‘the Donggugyeojiseungnam’ made during the early period of the Joseon Dynasty. The atlas shows great details on the locations and names of villages, the mountains and rivers of the land, the locations, shapes, sizes, colors and names of the fortress wall of Seoul, the districts of the land, and even the some of the Japanese territories. The atlas is assumed to be made as a reference of ‘the Donggugyeojiseungnam’ to conceal the geographical secrets and Kyungpook National University estimated that it was made around 1682; local historian Park Hye-bum assumed it was made in 1499. One thing was sure that it was the atlas made by the state. Park said “We need to pay attention to ‘the Heodohobu’ in Hamgyong Province in today’s China. There appeared the region called ‘Gonghumjin’. The atlas records that (a man called) Yoongwan built a castle in Gonghumjin and erected a stone to make sure that it was the border of Goryeo. Gonghumjin today is Younganhyun of Heilongjiang, the China's northernmost province, but used to be called ‘Gando’ by Koreans. The Joseon Dynasty regarded the border as the northern most end of the land.” The Joseon Dynasty asked the Ming dynasty of China about the division which was duly accepted according to the Taejong Annals of Joseon. But scholars of Korea and China today interpreted the location of ‘Gonghumjin’ on their own studies but it certainly is a Korean territory according to the atlas. However, the colonial Japanese sold the northern territory on the Gando Agreement signed with the Qing Dynasty in China in 1909 from which it has been belonged to the territory of China until today. In other words, the today’s border of the Korean Peninsula from the Amrok River to Jeju Island was made by Japan. But Park emphasized based on the atlas “The Korean territory must be from the Wunü Mountain in Huanren Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province, China to Daemado (Tsusima in Japanese).” Park continued “Mureugndo on the atlas is ‘Ulleungdo’ today and Ulleungdo on the atlas is ‘Dokdo’ today. The name Mureungdo instead of Ulleugndo was officially appeared in the Goryeosajulyo for the first time which records that Japanese invaders stayed on the island for a half month in 1379 and the name was used until 1511. The Donggugyeojiseungnam afterwards records the island as ‘Woosando’ and ‘Ulleungdo’ by the revision done during the Prince Yeonsan.” In other words, the atlas could be made alongside the Donggugyeojiseungnam in 1499. Many years passed, the Korean government claimed back the territory right of Daemado during the presidential period of Syngman Rhee but it was buried when the the Korean War broke out.” This is the reason, Park asserts, that the Korean historians must redefine the historical Korean territory based on the atlas Dongyeobigo.
