‘Sport in Latvia’ exhibition held at the National Assembly building to celebrate the Latvian Centennial Year 2018 and the PyeongChang 2018!

Latvian Embassy to S. Korea held, on Tuesday 23rd January, the opening ceremony of the exhibition ‘Sport in Latvia’ at the National Assembly building to celebrate the Latvian Centennial Year 2018 and the PyeongChang 2018. Ambassador Peteris Vaivars gave opening remark and it was followed by the congratulatory speech of Shim Ki-joon, a lawmaker and a member of the Democratic Party. Both Ambassador Vaivars and the lawmaker Shim emphasized on strengthening exchanges and cooperation between Latvia and S. Korea on the occasion of Latvia’s celebrating its Centennial Year 2018 and the PyeongChang 2018. It was heart-warming that Mr. Vaivars wished good results of the Korean team at the PyeongChang 2018 while Mr. Shim wished the same to the Latvian team in return. Latvia produced some of the star players in the Winter Olympics such as Martins who is nicknamed ‘the emperors of skeleton’. He and his brother Thomas proved it by taking the crown at IBSF World Cup Bob & Skeleton PyeongChange held at the PyeongChang Alpensia Sliding Center last March. The Latvian Ice Hockey team also is a fever for many Latvians. Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis said late last year that he expected medals from Skeleton, luge, bobsleigh and ice hockey, on the same day he announced a visit to S. Korea with his economic mission on the occasion of the PyeongChang 2018. Mr. Vejonis and the economic mission are to push forward cooperation with S. Korea in IT, timber (Latvia is famous for timber) and medicine alongside holding Latvia Business Forum.

Season’s Greetings!
Mr. Vaivars and Mrs. Vaivara send you good wishes

It is the season of giving, greeting and showing our gratitude. At this time of the year, people look back the year past and wish a new hope for the year ahead. Some might feel sentimental, some joyful or some the need of a romance. For those who live in a foreign country, they will feel more of homesick. I guess Latvian ambassador Mr. Peteris Vaivars and Mrs. Rina Okumura Vaivara would feel not much different from this sentiment when season’s greetings. It was one snowy night that they cordially invited people of diverse background, whether Koreans or expats, to the Embassy in Hanam-dong, Seoul, to share and to give over a salon concert; and also to open a new page of the “Latvian Music Performances in Korea”. The reception room of the Embassy is not that “grand” in size as you might imagine a ‘diplomatic grandiose’ but undeniably good enough and rather more inviting for a chamber music. You cannot help feeling a sense of coziness and welcoming the space creates once you step into the Embassy. With this special treat being received, the invited were guided a seat and the concert started soon after the greeting and a short introduction from Mr. Vaivars. Soprano Lee Sun-young and pianist Kim Hyun-young took the stage first to collaborate for ‘Giulio Cesare’ by Handel and for two Korean songs. Violinist Kim Mi-na and pianist Woo Mi-hye followed next to play three songs including Rachmaninoff’s ‘Vocalise’ and a theme from Romeo and Juliet. The pianist Woo then carried on playing the solo piano starting from Chopin’s Nocturne No.20 in C-sharp minor to six Latvian songs including the famous  ‘Dāvāja Māriņa meitenei mūžiņu (Māriņa Gave the Girl Life)’ well known as ‘Million Roses’ among many Koreans who might not know that the song actually was composed by Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls. At every finish of the performance round, Mr. Vaivars handed each performer a bunch of flowers and at the end of the whole concert, called them all onto the stage one more time to draw enthusiastic cheers from the audience. “Interesting to say that there are 2 million people living in Latvia but more than 3 million folk songs are sung by them. I think it is meaningful that Korean musicians play a choice of world music including Latvian folk songs and Korean songs here at the Embassy. I would like to show my gratitude to the excellent players today and the music professor Cho Bu-whan who managed the concert. Please stay a little longer as food and wines are prepared right behind for you” said Mr. Vaivars. Mrs. Vaivara also greeted each guest one by one, took their hands and showed her gratitude for making a journey in that “bad weather” – or “romantic weather” I might have to alter – that night. The year 2018 celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia and the Embassy in Seoul alongside Latvia on the Baltic Sea is to hold abundant events this year. Mr. Vaivars hoped that the year 2018 will be a milestone to boost up exchanges between Koreans and Latvians. National Library of Korea gets hold of a 21-volume facsimile edition of Francisk Skaryna’s books

Belarusian Ambassador A.Popkov presented a 21-volume facsimile edition of Francisk Skaryna’s books to the National Library of Korea (chief executive Park Joo Hwan) last December as part of the worldwide celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Belarusian book printing. Francysk Skaryna, an outstanding Belarusian scientist, philosopher and enlightener, was the first one in the Eastern Europe to translate and publish biblical texts in Cyrillic script (a writing system used for various alphabets across Eurasia). Skaryna, in the spirit of Reformation, translated the biblical texts into the language of his people in order to make his knowledge accessible not only to the elite, but also to wider circles of common citizens. The books of Francysk Skaryna are not only the first printed editions in Belarus but also in the whole Eastern Europe. About 520 copies of Skaryna’s publications are stocked in the libraries, museums and archives of Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Russia, the USA, Ukraine and the Czech Republic. The presentation ceremony was organized in a meeting between Mr. Popkov and Park with a good will to boost cultural exchanges between Belarus and Korea.
