산업부산물 활용한 친환경 콘크리트 개발로 주목
갈수록 심각해지는 환경오염 문제는 우리에게 ‘변화’를 요구하고 있다. 그리고 이는 사람들이 거주하거나 활용하는 각종 시설물과 공간을 만들어내는 건설 분야에서도 예외가 아니다. 이에 원광대학교 건축공학과 친환경융합건설재료·시공연구실에서는 ‘친환경’과 ‘융·복합’을 중심으로 빠르게 변화하고 있는 건설재료·시공 분야에 대한 활발한 연구 활동을 이어오고 있다.
‘친환경융합건설재료·시공연구실’은 친환경 콘크리트 분야의 권위자로 손꼽히는 최세진 교수의 지도하에 2015년 개설됐다. 최세진 교수는 충남대에서 박사학위를 받은 후 U.C.Berkeley, 삼표 기술연구소, (재)포항산업과학연구원 및 ㈜포스코 건축연구그룹을 거쳐 지난 2015년부터 원광대에 재직하고 있으며, 약 170여 개에 달하는 국내·외 논문 발표와 20여 건의 특허 및 신기술 인증, 세계 3대 인명사전인 영국 케임브리지 국제인명센터(IBC) 등재에 이어 세계 3대 인명사전인 ‘마르퀴즈 후즈 후’에 5년 연속 등재되는 등 세계적 석학으로도 인정받고 있는 인물이다. 최 교수는 “콘크리트의 핵심 원료인 시멘트는 전체 체적의 약 10~20%를 차지하며 골재의 결합강도를 높이는 중요한 역할을 수행합니다. 하지만 제조 과정에서 대량의 이산화탄소가 발생하는 까닭에 온실가스 발생의 주범이라는 지적을 받고 있습니다”라고 설명했다.
이에 그는 오랫동안 친환경 콘크리트 연구·개발에 심혈을 기울여 왔으며, 최근 산업부산물인 고로슬래그와 플라이애시를 활용해 이산화탄소 발생을 최소화하는 것은 물론, 강도 및 내구성을 개선한 우수한 성능의 친환경 콘크리트를 개발하며 학계와 산업계의 주목을 받은 바 있다. 최 교수는 “기존에 개발되어 있던 기술의 경우 여러 한계점 때문에 20~30%의 대체 수준에 머물러 있었으나, 저희 연구팀에서는 부단한 노력을 통해 대체 비율을 50%까지 끌어올린 기술을 이미 발표한 바 있으며, 최근에 개발된 기술은 70~80%까지 대체가 가능할 뿐 아니라 일반 시멘트만을 사용했을 때보다 더 뛰어난 강도와 내구성을 확보한 상태입니다”라고 밝혔다. 또한, 이 기술은 시멘트 제조에 의한 온실가스 배출을 효과적으로 줄일 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 불연 소재라는 장점을 가지고 있으며, 국내에서 연간 2200만 톤이 발생하는 산업부산물을 효율적으로 활용할 수 있는 해결책이 되리라 기대되고 있다.

“긴밀한 협업체계로 세계 최고 수준의 친환경 콘크리트 기술 이룩할 터”
친환경융합건설재료·시공연구실에서는 이와 같은 연구 성과를 토대로 ‘저시멘트형 산업부산물 대량 활용 콘크리트에 대한 연구’와 ‘친환경 신소재를 적용한 고성능 콘크리트 및 다학제간 융·복합 연구’에 주력하고 있다. 주요 연구로는 산업부산물 기반의 ‘친환경콘크리트 분야’, 페로니켈 슬래그를 활용한 ‘철강부산물의 건설소재 적용성 연구 분야’. 다기능성 콘크리트 블록 등을 개발하는 ‘콘크리트 2차제품 개발 연구 분야’. 초고층구조물의 요소기술로 부각되고 있는 ‘경량골재 콘크리트 적용 연구 분야’, 신소재를 가미해 인장강도와 인성을 강하게 하고, 균열 및 부식을 줄인 비정질금속섬유 등의 ‘신소재 융합형 건설재료 기술 개발 분야’, 건설과 IT·BT·NT 등의 기술을 접목해 자기치유 콘크리트 등을 개발하는 ‘구조물 안전성 향상을 위한 다학제간 융·복합 분야’가 있다. 또한, 연구실의 구성원들의 역량 향상과 최신 트렌드의 적극적인 수용을 위해 매년 국내·외 학술대회에 참가하고 있으며, 주별 연구세미나 및 발표회, 분기별 워크숍도 개최하고 있다. 
연구실을 이끌고 있는 최세진 교수가 무엇보다 강조하는 것은 연구실 멤버들 간의 협업이다. 나 혼자 잘해서 되는 것이 아닌 누군가의 도움과 노력이 뒷받침되어야만 좋은 성과를 창출할 수 있으며, 이는 다양한 기술이 결합되는 융복합적인 특성을 가진 건설 분야에서도 필수적인 요소라는 생각이다. 이러한 지도방침은 대학 강단에서의 후학 양성에도 그대로 적용되어 한국건설순환자원학회에서 개최한 ‘건설순환자원디지털 포스터 경진대회’에서 원광대 학생들이 15~16년 2년 연속 대상을 수상하는 쾌거를 낳았으며, 최 교수는 공로를 인정받아 ‘건설순환자원 인재지도자상’을 받기도 했다. 최 교수는 “대한민국 친환경 콘크리트 기술이 세계에서 인정받을 수 있는 날까지 항상 노력하는 자세로 최선을 다하겠습니다”라고 포부를 밝혔다. 끊임없는 열정과 노력으로 대한민국 건축기술의 미래를 이끌어가는 이들의 행보가 주목된다.

“Promoting excellent eco-friendly concrete of Korea to the world”
Choi Se-jin, Professor at Wonkwang University Eco-friendly Convergence Construction Materials Research Institute 

The Wonkwang University Eco-friendly Convergence Construction Materials Research Institute opened its door in 2015 under the leadership of Professor Choi Se-jin with the goal to promote eco-friendly concrete of Korea to meet the ever increasing demand for unharmful materials in the construction industry. Choi is received as an authority in the field of eco-friendly concrete. He obtained a PhD from Chungnam National University and engaged himself in U.C. Berkeley, Sampyo Technical Institute, Pohang Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology, and POSCO Architecture Research Group before taking the current professor’s position at Wonkwang University since 2015. He published around 170 academic papers domestic and abroad, obtained 20 patents and NET(New Excellent Technology Authentication), listed his name in IBC (International Biographical Centre) and Marquis Who’s Who for 5 years in a row. “Cement is one of the core materials of concrete taking up 10~20% of the whole volume and plays the role to increase bonding strength of aggregate. The problem is that it produces considerable amount of carbon dioxide, one of the main causes of green house effect, during the manufacturing process. That’s why I’ve spent years of my research on research and development of eco-friendly concrete” says Choi. He used blast furnace slag and fly ash to minimize carbon dioxide and attracted a great attention from the industry officials by developing eco-friendly concrete with enhanced strength and durability. “I and my team raised the alternative ratio to 50% as opposed to the current 20 to 30% and our recent development raised it even further to 70 to 80% with better intensity and durability.” The technology also is proved to effectively reduce green-house gas emission and is received as a good alternative for using industrial by-products effectively. Based on these achievements, Choi and his team are pushing forward ‘Research on Low Cement Type Industrial By-Products Concrete’ and ‘Converged Research on Eco-friendly New Materials-Applied High Performance Concrete’; the researches are divided into various sub research projects relating to concrete and all research projects are backed up by continuous attendance in conferences home and abroad as well as regular seminars and workshops. Some of the team members proved their research capabilities by winning the grand prize at the Construction Recycled Resources Digital Poster Competition for twice in a row in 2015 and 2016. In recognition, Choi also was awarded the leadership prize. “I and my team will do our best until the eco-friendly concrete technology of Korea is recognized in the world.”
