보다 진화된 공기청정기의 이정표 제시  
대기 중의 미세먼지와 초미세먼지로 인해 공기청정기에 대한 관심이 뜨겁다. 기술의 발전으로 다양한 해법이 공기청정기에 적용되면서 소비자들에게 선풍적인 인기를 끌고 있는 가운데, 극한의 청정기술을 위해 업계에서는 각고의 노력을 경주하고 있는 것이 사실이다.
이중에서도 광촉매 기술을 적용한 소형 공기청정기를 제품화해 화제를 모으고 있는 기업이 있다. 바로 ㈜도경21이 그 주인공이며, 최첨단 나노입자 개발에 대한 원천기술을 바탕으로 공기청정기 시장의 신선한 바람을 불러일으키고 있다.
지난 2014년 12월 국립 공주대학교 창업보육센터에 입주한 ㈜도경21은 2016년 벤처기업 인증을 획득했으며, 올해까지 중소벤처기업청(구 중소기업청) 산학협력과제를 성공적으로 수행해 온 내실 있는 기술집약형 벤처기업이다.
무엇보다 ㈜도경21을 주목해야 할 부분은 광촉매 나노입자 기술을 적용한 공기청정기이다. 먼저 광촉매 기술의 이해를 위해 신익조 대표는 “이산화티타늄(TiO₂)이 코팅된 나노 광촉매에 자외선(UV)을 비추면 오염된 공기가 산화 반응을 일으켜 담배연기, 바이러스, 세균, VOCs 등의 2만여 종의 불순물과 유해입자 구조를 0.0001µ(마이크론) 입자까지 파괴해 수증기와 이산화탄소로 배출하는 최첨단 기술입니다”라고 설명했다.
그러나 위의 기술은 치명적인 특이점을 낳게 된다. 이산화티타늄이 자외선과 공기를 만나 산화 반응을 일으키는 과정에서 오존(O₃) 등의 인체에 유해한 물질을 배출하는 역효과가 나타나게 된다는 것이다. 이를 해결한 것이 ㈜도경21에서 개발·보유하고 있는 나노 광촉매 특허 기술이다. 기존 자외선이 아닌 가시광선을 활용해 인체에 유해한 물질 배출을 원천 차단시켰으며, 다수의 정부출연 연구기관에서 월등한 시험성적을 통과해 그 기술력을 인정받았다.  
㈜도경21은 이처럼 독보적인 기술을 응용해 지난해 탁상형 공기청정기 제품 출시를 시작으로 금년 5월 차량 겸용 공기청정기 개발을 완료했다. 또한 지난 9월에는 중진공 글로벌 소싱페어상품에 선정되어 현재 일본의 YOKO社와 협의 중에 있으며, 충남 창업경진대회 입상, ‘광촉매가 코팅된 공기청정기 팬’ 특허 등록, 중진공 GMD 매칭업체 선정 등 혁혁한 성과를 일궈내기도 했다.
     
독보적인 기술력, 국내를 넘어 해외 진출 기대
이렇듯 ㈜도경21이 기술력을 인정받아왔지만, 대내·외적인 공신력을 얻을 수 있기까지에는 수많은 시행착오와 어려움이 있었다. 신익조 대표는 “대다수의 기술집약형 벤처기업은 자본에 대한 압박이 매우 큽니다. 따라서 R&D에 집중하기 힘들고 개발이 완료되었다 하더라도 이를 제품화하기 위한 마케팅 능력이 부족하기 쉽상입니다”라고 답하며 본인 역시 예외는 아니었다고 토로했다. 
㈜도경21의 기술력이 빛을 발하는데 있어 공주대학교 산학협력센터와 창업보육센터의 도움도 컸다. 이를 통해 중기청 기술개발사업의 산학협력과제로 선정되어 자본의 부담을 덜 수 있었으며 마케팅, 특허, 기술컨설팅 등의 지원 사업이 제품 개발과 출시에 큰 보탬이 되었다.
한편, 신익조 대표는 초기 창업, 벤처기업들의 투자자금 매칭 기회가 좀 더 열려있길 희망한다고 당부했다. 상대적으로 자본과 매출이 소규모인 초기 단계의 기업들은 기술력이 확보되었을 때 엔젤 및 벤처 투자를 받으면 한 단계 도약할 수 있지만, 그렇지 못 할 경우 매우 어려운 과정과 좁은 문을 뚫고 나가야하기 때문이다.
향후 ㈜도경21의 성장 가능성은 무궁무진하다. 현재 광촉매 나노입자 기술을 적용한 공기청정기는 제품화에 성공해 양산 단계에 돌입했으며, 현대자동차의 자회사 ‘오토앤’을 통해 올해 말 공식적인 제품 출시가 예정되어 있다. 또한 12월 6일부터 3일간 개최되는 ‘2017 홍콩 스마트비즈엑스포’에 참가해 해외 진출의 교두보를 마련할 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.
신익조 대표는 앞으로 광촉매 기술을 적용한 자동차용 에어컨 필터와 중형 공기청정기를 개발해 제품 출시를 기획하고 있으며, 국내 축사환경에 도움을 줄 수 있는 축사용 공기청정기 개발에도 심혈을 기울이고 있다고 귀띔했다. ㈜도경21의 유래 없는 광촉매 나노입자 기술을 통해 우리의 삶이 한 단계 진화할 수 있길 희망한다.

Recent increase of fine dust and ultrafine dust in Korea has encouraged many people to have an effective air-purifier in their house or workplace. But they are often hesitant when it comes to choose the right one. In this respect, introducing DOKYEUNG21, which succeeded in making photo catalytic technology-loaded small air-purifiers, can give a helpful guide. The company boasts its original technology in nanoparticle development and obtained a venture enterprise certificate in 2016. “The photo catalytic technology destroys 20,000 kinds of harmful substances in the air such as smoke, virus, germs and VOCs up to 0.0001µ by illuminating UV to photo catalysis coated with TiO₂” explains CEO Shin Ik-jo. The problem is that TiO₂ causes oxidation reaction when meet UV and air which resulted in still releasing the harmful substances. Thus introduced by DOKYEUNG21 is the patented nano photo catalytic technology; using visible ray instead of UV to block the release of harmful substances at first hand; the technology passed the test carried out by a state research institute. Based on this technology, the company introduced a table-type air-purifier last year followed by the car-installable model in May this year. The products were chosen for Global Business Sourcing Fair in September this year and CEO Shin is working on signing a contract with Japanese YOKO at the moment. Shin also finished registration of the patent for ‘photo catalytic coated air-purifier fan’. “Most technology-intensive ventures get enormous pressure on securing the necessary capital. It makes R&D hard as well as marketing even after the development.” In this respect, Shin has a debt to Kong Ju National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Center and Startup Incubating Center which led Shin to securing the necessary fund from the Small & Medium Business Administration alongside the support for patent, technical consulting and marketing. The air-purifier models of DOKYEUNG21 are in the process of mass production at the moment and the official release is scheduled late this year through auto&, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor. As for the future plan, Shin is planning to develop air-conditioner filters and mid-sized air-purifier models for the use in home, workplace and cattle sheds.
