그리움이 달이 되다. 성순희 화백의 이번 시리즈 제목이다. 예술가는 항상 변화를 추구한다. 그 변화는 그저 가만히 있어서는 가능하지 않다. 항상 노력하고 연구하며, 화폭의 확장을 추구해야만 가능한 것이다. 
이번 시리즈 역시 그렇게 시작됐다. 이전의 작품에서는 오페라 가수들과의 협업을 통해 음악을 볼 수 있는 그림으로 표현해냈고, 악기와 가수들의 목소리, 그리고 오페라의 웅장함을 평면작업을 통해 관객에게 선보였다. 
이번의 경우 주제가 조금 달라졌다. 시의 감성과 그림의 감성이 어우러져 하나의 작품이 됐다. 그저 어려울 것 같던 시의 함축성을 그림의 표현력으로 변화시키며 더욱 깊이 있는 작품을 선보인 것이다. 
이번 시리즈 ‘그리움이 달이 되다’의 경우 성순희 화가의 내면에 있는 감정을 유감없이 표출했다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 
또한, 내면의 감정이 무한대로 확장돼 작품을 보고 있자면 그 범위와 깊이를 한 번에 느끼기엔 어려울 수 있다. 이전 시리즈였던 오페라와의 콜라보레이션 한 작품과는 또 다른 매력을 느낄 수 있는 것도 작품의 궁금증을 더했다. 
한편, 검정배경으로 우주의 무한함을 표현하고 한국적인 오방색을 활용해 색채의 다양함도 선보였다. 그 배경과 색의 조화로 인간의 감정을 표현하며 사람의 형태에서 가슴만 유독 뚫려있는 것은 그 마음이 달이 돼 세상을 비춘다는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 또 그 달은 인간의 복잡한 감정과 우주의 광대한 기운의 미묘한 조합으로 작품을 좀 더 깊이있게 이해하길 바라는 작가의 감정을 담기도 했다. 
항상 시리즈로 작품을 완성해나가는 성순희 화가는 그동안의 작품에서도 주제를 완벽히 이해하려면 처음부터 끝 작품까지 차례대로 보길 권했는데, 이번 시리즈 역시 새롭게 시작하는 지금의 작품부터 언제 마지막 작품이 나올지는 모르지만 마지막에 나오는 작품까지 관심을 가져주길 희망한다고 전했다. 
또, 콜라보레이션을 통한 작품 활동을 이어가는 이유에 대해 화가는 시인도 되었다가 음악가도 되었다가 화가도 될 수 있는 종합예술인으로서의 자질을 갖춰야하며, 모든 것을 그림으로 표현해 관객과 만날 수 있는 능력이 필요하다고 강조했다. 
더불어 공간과 공간의 표현, 면과 면의 표현, 선과 선의 표현을 자유롭게 자연스럽게 함으로써 작품의 유연함을 더하고 그 속에 작가의 철학을 담아 관객들이 생각하고 느낄 수 있는 작품을 이어가겠다는 뜻을 밝히기도 했다. 
앞으로 지금의 시리즈를 꾸준히 진행하면서 아이들과의 협업도 병행하겠다는 성순희 화가는 아이들의 시선으로 바라 본 세상을 배우고 그 눈을 통해 완성하는 작품의 방법을 추구하겠다고 한다. 
더불어 다양한 전시를 통한 관객과의 소통 역시 자신의 책무라고 생각하며, 꾸준한 작품 활동으로 항상 새롭게 다양한 작품을 선보이겠다고 전했다. 
그동안 동화적 환상성을 밀도 있게 표현했던 성순희 화백. 그의 도전에 관심을 갖게 되는 것은 항상 변화하며 한국화단에선 쉽게 볼 수 없던 작품의 유형이 그의 손에서 시작되는 것 때문이다. 앞으로 그의 작품에 더욱 큰 관심이 필요한 이유가 같은 맥락일 것이다. 

Expanding the scope of works by picture-poem collaboration

‘Longing Becomes The Moon’. It is the title of the latest series of artist Sung Soon-hee. Artists always pursue changes. And the changes are not possible by staying but working hard, studying hard and expanding the canvas hard. The series this time was created based on this. Previously, Sung collaborated with opera singers to create her pictures from which we could see the music. She realized the sounds of the singers and instruments as well as the magnificence of the opera on the flat surface. This time the theme was a little bit changed; Sung added poetic sentiment to the picturesque sentiment. She changed the poetic implications to picturesque expressionism to give in-depth to her works. It is not much to say that Sung most satisfactorily burst out her emotions in this latest series ‘Longing Becomes The Moon’. If might be difficult for us to feel the depth and scope at once as our emotions could expand limitlessly by appreciating the works. The charm of the series, different from the opera collaboration, also can add our curiosity about the works. Sung used black background to express the boundless spaces and the Korean five colors to give diversity. The empty heart of the man indicates the moon that it lights the world. Sung hopes the viewers will go deeper into works with understanding of the delicate combination of the vast energy of the universe and the intricate emotions of man. Sung always attaches to series works and one might have to start from the first work to the last in order to better understand the series. When asked about the reason of the collaboration, she said that artists should be versatile and can be a poet sometimes and a musician another time but express everything in the form of a picture. Sung adds tenderness by drawing spaces, surfaces and lines as natural as possible and putting her philosophy into the effort so that the viewers can feel and think about the works. Meanwhile, she is planning to work together with children, learn the world from the children’s view point and complete the works through their eyes. In fact, Sung has expressed fairy tale-like fantasy in-depth through her works. The reason we are paying attention to her challenge is because she always pursues changes and creates unique styles that are unprecedented in the Korean art world. So it is only natural for us to expect what her next exhibition will look like?
