<Shamanism / Korean Folk Belief Special (5) – Shinsigoong ‘Byeon Bo-gyeong’ Bodhisattva>
“The path of a pupil who embraces tears of people”
‘Byeon Bo-gyeong’ Bodhisattva suggests a happy life through philosophy and spiritual advice

‘Byeon Bo-gyeong’ Bodhisattva suggests a happy life through philosophy and spiritual advice
Shamans are people who suffer from physical and mental pains in a way to help people in loneliness and misery and to deliver teachings of the sky so that people can recover human nature called ‘sunchunghu’. A shaman Byeon Bo-gyeong runs Shinsigoong in Gwangju. She led a normal life like many normal people. But she became eager for study one day. So she studied the four pillars of destiny and philosophy on fate and opened a small fortuneteller at the age of around 38. “People sometimes asked me whether I was possessed. And I said I would not be possessed.” In fact, Byeon grew up watching her mother who ran a shrine (Buddhist sanctuary). When her mother closed the shrine, her father passed away. Her mother also suffered from various diseases such as dementia and cerebral apoplexy before passing away. So Byeon decided to never be possessed. “Strangely, I dreamt a dream that an old man handed me over a book. My brother also had a few of car accidents. So I gave a ritual to ancestors and my mouth said ‘when are you going to enshrine your grandmother?’”. Byeon then decided to be a pupil of spirit who embraces tears of other people.

Traveling shrines all over the country, “predicting future with divine response”
Byeong traveled shrines all over the country and the support of her husband. “I read books and untangled ‘go’ and then I started see the light. If I saw the divination, I could see whether he/she recently lost a member of family and why. I could also see a car. Some said ‘divine response’ was the best and other said ‘philosophy’ was the best. Some people also said doing together reduced accuracy.” Byeon does not talk about the past but predicts the future. “An old woman asked me whether her daughter in late age could marry with the man she chose. I said that they were not together but they could when they had a baby. After some time, the old woman called on the phone and said that her daughter seemed to lose her baby in her womb. So I gave a ‘hanyang ritual’ and laid a living bridge for the baby. After some time, the old woman called me again and said that her daughter had a healthy baby.”

“Being an honest and proud pupil of spirit”
Byeon advises that knowing ‘yukchin’ makes us able to see the four pillars of destiny and they are good when mixed. ‘Yukchin’ is parents, sisters and brothers, wife’s property, children, gwangui and sewoong. It means human relations and social relations built based on yin and yang. ‘Yukchin’ consists of bigyeon, gupjae, siskin, sanggwan, pyeonjae, jungjae, pyeongwan, junggwan, pyeonin and jungin. Sinyangsaju is pyeongwan, junggwan, pyeongjae, jungjae, siskin and sanggwan and it is the four pillars of destiny that one is born strong and act independently but can be biased and self-righteous. So the balanced four pillars of destiny is good. Sinyaksaju is bigyeon, gupjae, pyeongin and jungin and it is passive and contemplative but persistent and meticulous. Byeon also advises that excessive ‘mokhwatogeumsu’ can cause negative effect. “People who have colors which are not in the four pillars of destiny should wear underwear in appropriate color. People who have more ‘hwa’ are recommended to grow flower plants to add ‘su’. People who have more ‘to’ are recommended to climb mountains often.” A person who has watched Byeon closely for a long time said “I asked her advice on my children’s career and she pointed out the right colors. As a result, things went well for my oldest child. Byeon also explains easily about the four pillars of destiny.” Byeon said “The path I’m walking as a pupil of spirit is the path to embrace pains and tears of all people.”
