[Korean folk belief] ‘Finding the best medium of our time’ (1)
“A child with crystal spirit resounds in the exorcism hall”
‘Spiritual House’ and ‘Haehwa Bodhisattva’ organize the best shamanist team

Kim of ‘Spiritual House’ sees ancestors with spiritual eyes

Shamanism is a religion that a medium called shaman mediates spirit and man. It has a long history with Dangun (honorary term of a shaman, chief priest and politician). Shamans, male and female alike, have been existent for a long time in our daily life. Some say about traditional beliefs in Korea “shaman and folk beliefs last as long as human are existent on earth. Therefore, they are not distinguishable.”

Ancestral rites we do in family gathering, in fact, can be seen as a ritual to call the deceased that was passed down from folk beliefs. In this respect, ‘Spiritual House’ (Kim Young-suk Haehwa Bodhisattava, Yu Jae-hyuck Youngbupsa), located in Busan is attracting people’s interest.

Kim made her first appearance on YouTube. Kim’s husband Yu also is walking the same path as Kim. It has been only 3 months Spiritual House came to be known to the world but Kim was possessed by the spirit of her mother shaman who is regarded as the best in South Gyeongsang Province long time ago and her experience and supernatural power spread mouth to mouth in the region.

Interestingly, Kim’s family was Christian. Her father graduated from college of theology and became a pastor and her grandmother was missionary. It was when she first gave birth to a baby that she started to feel an unnatural energy. “I moved to a new house and started to see ghosts. An acquaintance suggested me to see a shaman and the shaman said that my family was related to spirit but had ignored so far and it was time I received the spirit. It was nonsense and I just left the place.”

“Shaman was unacceptable as Christian”
Leaving everything behind and being a shaman

The rejection came back as spiritual disease to Kim. “I lied down and an old woman was watching down on me. I went to psychiatric hospital and took medicine in no avail. The doctor said that I was OK medically so I needed to see a shaman. I revisited the shaman, gave a ritual to my ancestors and repeated it several times.”

Kim enjoyed a well off life as she already had 3 apartment houses when she was 30 but she started to spend excessive amount of money which one day she spent 10 million won ($8.878) at a department store. Her houses eventually were taken by the bank and she went bankrupt.

An acquaintance offered consulting and a person who listened to the story of Kim left several thousand won under ‘johwang’. Touched by this, Kim cried hard. Soon after, Kim’s daughter started to whistle every day after sunset. One day, the old woman appeared again in her dream and said whether she put bells to Kim’s daughter instead of her. “I was really scared by the saying and it was the moment I accepted my fate.”

Bowing to the spirit for daughter
Pain and tears to understand better of her clients

It is notable that many visitors to Kim are people with the issues of their children. One day, an old woman visited and said that her granddaughter aged less than 100 days started crying after sunset. “I paid a visit to the house and found that a woman with a new born baby was stoking the baby’s hair in veranda. I then asked whether someone died of giving birth and found that the child’s mother died as such. So I gave a ritual for the child and the child soon stopped crying.”

Kim analyzes the need when a visitor gets into her room and makes him/her feel comforted through rituals. And Kim greets every single of her clients with utmost care for she herself suffered much before being a shaman.

“To receive a spirit, one must have clear soul and deep heart. This is because I also receive money from spirits and ancestors so I must give all my care and effort.”

Leading a shamanist team with her husband
Doing best and serving as a true pupil

Currently, Kim and Yu are leading the best shamanist team alongside their stable family. Fellow shamans gather together at Spiritual House when Kim and Yu hold jega ritual. Clients become family and the shamanist team provides its best: the team piles up the ritual food in and outside of the ritual hall and launches ritual dancing from exorcism to straw cutter on double-headed drum, gong and pipe.

A ritual normally takes half a day and Yu is an expert to lead it smoothly and meticulously. It is Kim’s characteristic to change her to voice to a child’s after the exorcism dance. This is because a child with crystal spirit resounds in the exorcism hall.

“I wish to live by giving helping hand to children in need especially parentless or single parent. I want to be a big pupil and help and teach them more than now. I want to be a pupil who can relieve the deep resentment of ancestors in households and gives down nirvana.”

There is a saying “A happy family walks a happy path in everything.” I hope that more people can find a healing and comfort with the help of ‘Spiritual House’.
