삼국시대 이래 지난 1,600여 년간 불교는 부처의 가르침을 세상 곳곳에 전파하며 우리 민족과 함께 성장해왔다. 특히, 고통 속에 신음하는 만민을 구제하라는 가르침은 한국불교의 주된 사상으로 자리 잡으며, 민초들의 삶을 보듬어 왔다. 가르침을 배우는 일보다 중요한 것은 그 가르침을 실천하는 일이다. 이에 신라 천년고찰의 기품을 간직한 용인 갈마산 동도사의 주지 도원 스님은 우리 주변의 소외된 이웃들에게 나눔과 사랑을 전하며 부처님의 자비행을 실천하고자 노력해왔다.

지역사회와 함께 숨 쉬는 천년사찰 동도사
용인 전통사찰 95호인 동도사(東道寺)는 통일신라 말 금단선사가 창건한 금단사(金丹寺)에 그 뿌리를 두고 있다. 경기도 유형문화재 194호로 지정된 어비리삼층석탑이 보존되어 있으며, 대웅전에는 용인시 향토유적 65호 석가여래좌불상이 모셔져 있어 역사적·학술적 가치가 매우 높은 경기도 내에서도 유일무이한 사찰이다. 뒤로는 갈마산, 앞으로는 이동저수지를 마주하고 있어 사계절 내내 아름다운 풍광을 자랑하며 방문객이 끊이지 않는 명소이기도 하다.
임진왜란과 저수지 조성으로 인한 시련에도 굴하지 않고 묵묵히 자리를 지켜 온 동도사는 한때 두 차례에 걸친 큰 화재로 위기를 맞기도 했다. 2001년 누전사고로 인해 대웅전이 전소됐던 것을 2005년 가까스로 복원하였으나, 2008년 단청불사를 하던 중 다시 화재가 발생해 대웅전이 재차 소실되는 아픔을 겪은 것이다. 그러나 이에 좌절하지 않고 복원에 매진한 동도사 주지 도원 스님과 이를 물심양면으로 지원하고 격려해 준 많은 이들의 도움이 있었기에 천년고찰로서의 위용을 되찾을 수 있었다고 한다. 그리고 당시의 경험은 도원 스님이 지난 20여 년간 이어온 나눔과 봉사에 더욱 매진하게 하는 계기가 되었다. 
1986년부터 우리 주변의 소외된 이웃을 돕기 위한 활동을 계속해 온 도원 스님은 2000년부터는 청소년 돕기 일일찻집을 운영하며 모인 수익을 소년소녀가장을 위한 장학금으로 전달하고 있다. 또한, 무위탁 노인과 다문화 가정, 지체장애아동을 위한 성금을 모아 쌀과 김치, 각종 생필품의 형태로 기탁하고 있다. 지난해 2월에도 바자회와 일일찻집 등을 통해 모은 400여만 원으로 쌀과 라면, 화장지 등을 구입해 전달한 바 있으며, 김장김치 15kg 40상자를 독거노인과 나누는 전달식을 갖기도 했다. 
도원 스님이 지난 25년 간 이어온 군부대 포교와 17년의 수용자 포교활동도 계속되고 있다. 특히, 천안교도소 불우수용자 및 가족에게 김장김치를 전달하는 ‘사랑의 김장김치 나누기 행사’는 2014년 동도사 신도회의 후원으로 시작된 이래 높은 호응을 받아왔으며, 2015년부터는 ‘천안교도소 교정협의회’의 예산을 지원받아 진행되고 있다. 지난 2016 정기총회에서 천안교도소 교정협의회 회장으로 연임된 도원 스님은 “수형자 교정교화와 건전한 사회복귀를 돕고자 1:1 멘토링 데이를 꾸준히 진행하고 있습니다. 직접적인 소통과 상담을 통해 그들의 이야기를 듣고, 상처를 치유해 건강한 사회인으로 변화시켜나가는 것이 저의 바람입니다”라고 밝혔다. 부처님의 말씀이 그들에게 당장의 변화를 가져오긴 어려울지 몰라도, 가슴 속 깊이 내재되어 있다가 어느 순간 깨달음을 얻게 되리라 확신한다는 것이 도원 스님의 믿음이다.

만민에 대한 복지 실현, 재정적 지원이 뒷받침되어야
그러나 세상 만민을 위한 도원 스님의 활동에도 어려움은 존재한다. 부족한 사찰 재정여건으로 인해 다양한 사업을 진행하는 데 있어 곤란을 겪고 있기 때문이다. 사찰 규모에 비해 열악한 환경 속에 방치됐던 해우소 건립도 지난해에 이르러서야 가까스로 도비와 시비 및 자부담을 포함한 예산이 마련돼 완공된 바 있다. 오랜 숙원 사업 중 한 가지를 이루었으나, 여전히 많은 사업이 재정적 어려움으로 답보 상태를 거듭하고 있는 상황이다. 도원 스님은 “사회 곳곳에는 지금 이 순간에도 여전히 많은 이들이 고통 받고 있고, 힘겨운 생활을 이어나가고 있습니다. 이에 동도사를 모든 중생들이 편하게 쉬어갈 수 있는 공간으로 만들고자 노력하고 있으나 재정적 여건 마련이 쉽지 않아 난항을 겪고 있습니다”라며, 보다 많은 이들의 관심과 지원, 지자체 차원에서의 제도적 뒷받침이 필요하다고 강조했다. 
도원 스님은 재정적 여건이 마련되는 대로 노후에 갈 곳이 없는 불자들이 여생을 편히 쉴 수 있는 요양원 건립과 함께, 사회 소외계층과 지역 주민들이 함께 즐기는 복합문화센터를 건립하고자 한다. 도원 스님은 “갈수록 고령화 되어가는 현대 사회 속에서 노년층을 위한 복지시설은 턱없이 부족한 것이 사실입니다. 때문에 수많은 이들이 사회의 그늘진 구석으로 밀려나고 있으며, 노환과 질병 속에 생계를 걱정해야 하는 처지에까지 몰리고 있습니다. 이에 저희는 이러한 분들이 부처님의 자비 속에 보다 편안한 노후를 보낼 수 있는 공간을 마련하고자 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 또한, 각종 문화공연과 템플스테이, 명상교육, 갤러리 및 박물관의 역할을 하게 될 복합문화센터를 통해 소외계층에게는 문화적 혜택을, 일반인들에게는 우리 민족 고유의 전통문화에 대한 소중함을 일깨워줄 수 있는 계기를 만들어가고자 한다. 
한편, 도원 스님은 용인불교연합창단 창립 초대단장과 용인불교회관상임법사를 역임하였으며, 용인시불교 사암연합회 총무직을 십 수 년간 역임한 뒤 2011년 회장으로 추대되어 용인불교의 발전과 화합에 큰 역할을 했다는 평을 받으며 2017년 재차 추대되기도 했다. 최근에는 용인시 평화소녀상건립추진위원회 공동대표로 활동하고 있으며, 오는 8월 15일 광복절에 시청광장에서 ‘평화의 소녀상’ 제막식을 앞두고 있다. 100만 용인시민들에게 우리 역사의 아픔과 치유의 의미를 전하고, 한반도와 국제사회의 평화를 염원하는 동시에, 소외되고 고통 받는 어려운 이웃과 함께하는 용인불교의 큰 뜻을 펼쳐나가는 것이 도원 스님의 목표다. 
마지막으로 도원 스님은 “행복은 바로 자신의 마음속에 있는 것”이라며, 욕심과 집착을 버리고, 모든 것에 감사하는 마음을 가질 때 비로소 행복한 삶을 누릴 수 있다고 조언했다. 그런 의미에서 ‘나눔’이란 다른 이들을 돕는 일인 동시에 자기 자신의 삶을 충만하게 가꾸는 일이기도 하다는 말도 덧붙였다. 베풂과 나눔을 통해 헌신하는 것이 자신의 역할이자 사명이라는 도원 스님. 부처의 자비행을 실천하는 그의 모습에서 혼란한 현대사회를 살아가는 많은 이들에게 건네는 위로와 희망을 담은 따스한 빛이 새어나오는 듯하다.

One thousand year Dongdosa Temple breathes with local community

Dongdosa Temple is Yongin City’s No.95 Traditional Temple and has its root in Geumdansa Temple built by Monk Geumdan in the Unified Shilla Kingdom. The temple embraces Eoribi Three Story Stone Pagoda, the No.194 Tangible Asset of Gyeonggi Province, and the Statue of Buddha, the No.65 Local Relic of Yongin City in the main temple. These two assets have high historical and academic values and thus the temple is regarded as unique. Kalmasan Mountain is behind the temple and Idong Reservoir is in front and visitors can enjoy fully the four seasonal changes of nature.

The main temple was burnt down by a fault current in 2001 and recovered in 2005 but burnt down again in 2008 and re-recovered with the help of people led by the chief monk Dowon. But this unfortunate incident served as a momentum for Dowon to have carried on his sharing and volunteer activities for the last 20 years. 

Dowon started to give helping hand to neighbors in need from 1986 and run a daily tea room to help youth in need from 2000. Also, he is collecting donations (money, rice, kimchi and daily necessities) for elderly with no shelter, multi-cultural families and disabled children. He collected 4 million won ($3,557) to buy rice, ramen and tissues and 40 boxes of 15kg kimchi through bazaars and daily tea rooms to be sent to people in need last February. 

His helping hand also has reached soldiers for 25 years and prisoners for 17 years. He and brothers and sisters of Dongdosa Temple launched an event in 2014 to give kimchi to prisoners of Cheonan Prison and their families and the event keeps carrying on with the support of the Cheonan Prison Reform Association. Dowon started to serve as the president of the association from 2016. He said “We give a particular focus on 1:1 mentoring to help them return back to society with sound mind. We listen carefully to each of their stories and give helpful advice and heal the wound.”

“Helping others also needs support alongside the will”

Despite the heartwarming devotion of Dowon and brothers and sisters of Dongdosa Temple, the local government’s financial support for the squeezed budget of the temple seems not sufficient. The temple only secured part of the fund from the local governments to build a new toilet last year but many socially good charity events are still in need of support. 

“There are people who are suffering from hunger and financial difficulty right now. Our goal is to turn the temple to a place where all those suffering people come and rest and find a peace of their heart and body. But this also requires budget. So I ask the local governments and people to give support.”

Dowon continues “Eventually, I want to build a complex cultural facility where not only people in need come and rest but also local residents alike especially the elderly people as we are getting into an aging society. So we had better prepare in earlier stage.” 

In fact, the facility, if completed, will also run various programs such as music and performance, temple stay, meditation and exhibition so that more people can benefit from culture and art. 

Meanwhile, Dowon served as the first director of the Federation of Yongin Buddhist Choirs and the permanent Buddhist priest of the Yongin Buddhist Hall and worked as the secretary general of the Yongin Buddhist Saam Federation for tens of years before became the president of the federation in 2011. He once again was inducted to the same position in 2017 for the contribution to the development and harmony of the Korean Buddhism. Currently, he is working as a co-president of the Yongin Statue of Peace for Comfort Women Promotion Committee and is preparing for the unveiling ceremony of the statue in the Seoul City Hall Square on 15 August, the Liberation Day. It is Dowon’s goal to pray for healing of the painful history, for peace in the Korean Peninsula and the world and for underprivileged people in benevolence of Buddha.
