[Art] Master craftsman Mimok (beautiful tree) Kim Tae-ki
Communication with trees reborn as works of art

Kim pours his soul into ‘sokak (carving letters on wood)’
Sokak artist Kim is based in Hoengseong County. He started ‘sokak’ without a grand ambition or dream but in order to earn bread and butter. But that has been 40 years today before he knows. He looks back the days when he met his wood carving teacher Moka Park Chan-su (important intangible cultural asset No.108). From holding the knife to carving the details, Park delivered his expertise to Kim who carried out a number of ‘jangseung (Korean totem poles at village entrance)’ under the instruction of Park. “Carving wood is a process of realizing an art work that is coincided with the carver’s inner side. Jangseung is a warped and twisted wood which makes the carver’s work a challenge but it is also the charm of it for that reason” says Kim. If Park gave Kim a huge influence on jangseung carving, Kim’s late teacher Dancho Sim Jong-bo did the same on ‘sokak (carving latters on wood)’. The latter requires quite a different skill from the former as each style of letter must thoroughly be carved on wood and the training normally takes a considerable amount of time and effort to reach the mastery level.

Winning highly respected prizes
It is said that sokak does not have standardized principle on carving methods. So it depends hugely on one’ own technique and imagination. “It might sound really difficult as there is no guideline like sketches in western painting but that makes it more interesting. Carving letters one by one and pouring the vitality in them truly is an exciting process and I feel overwhelmed when the result is communicated with the appreciators at the exhibitions.” This might be the reason that Kim sticks to the traditional hand-carving despite the technology today offers convenience of machine. Also, Kim does not wish to lose his mastery hand skill on perfecting intaglio and relief to the machine. This of his integrity and mastery hand skills were well recognized by winning the ministerial prize from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy at the 9th Korea Craft Art Competition and Cultural Tourism Product Fair 2015 with his work ‘Bare Hand’. It was followed by yet another winning the chairman’s prize of the National Assembly at the 8th Korea Unification World Environment Art Competition with his work ‘A Thousand Year Rock Does Not Make Sound for Her Pain’. To the latter work, Kim gave delicate colors and deeply carved letters in order to express the pain of the Korean people and our wish for unification.

Laying the foundation for building an art village
Kim built his own house by himself in Hoengseong County in 2005 for the use of both as a workshop and an exhibition hall. “I would like to share my knowhow and experience with younger artists and suggest better ways to get through the harsh life as an artist. I also wish that the workshop might be used to activate regional culture as the people in the rural areas have less opportunity to enjoy art due to lack of facilities. As for the future plan, I wish to build an art village where artists in the same mind gather together and share each other’s ideas and thoughts. For this, I will build 5 buildings in the future to be rented for artists.”

Donating scholarships to local students
Kim is as famous for his good deeds as for his carving skills. He has regularly donated scholarships to students since his mid-30s when he was a businessman and the good deed has been kept going on in Gonggeun-myeon, Hoengseong County today. He and his wife (Lee Soon-ae, for example, recently donated a 3 million won ($2,674) on Gonggeun-myeon Residents Day last April and the donation was shared by 2 local high school students and 2 university students. Kim also plans to run a café in those 5 buildings above mentioned so that all the profits of the café goes to scholarship. “All of these could happen thanks to the unsparing support of my family. I think the happiness I feel when helping people is as equal as the happiness I feel with my family. So I will keep doing this good deed as long as it lasts.” Kim currently is living with his wife, his son and the daughter in law as well as his grandson and daughter. “I moved my base to Hoengseong County in 2005 and I carved ‘jangseung’ at the village entrance, still standing as a patron saint with eyes wide open.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
