시설 업그레이드로 한층 발전한 인프라 구축
올해로 창립 40주년을 맞이한 김해시테니스협회는 엘리트 선수 육성을 위한 지원과 생활체육으로서의 저변 확대, 동호인 간의 친목도모 등을 통해 김해시 테니스를 발전시키고자 앞장서왔다. 특히, 45개의 테니스 클럽과 1,500명에 이르는 회원 수를 바탕으로 어려운 여건 속에서도 의미 있는 변화를 이끌어내며 김해는 물론 경남지역과 한국 테니스의 활성화에도 기여해왔다는 평을 받고 있다. 
지난해 1월 취임해 지금까지 김해시테니스협회를 이끌어 오고 있는 이두희 회장은 “경남 제2의 도시인 김해시는 최근 빠른 성장 속에 인구 53만을 넘어서며 동남권의 주요 거점도시로 성장하고 있습니다. 그러나 그러한 위상에 걸맞은 문화체육 인프라는 아직까지도 미흡한 상황입니다”라며, “이에 저희 협회에서는 사교스포츠의 꽃이라 불리는 테니스를 김해시를 대표하는 생활스포츠로 육성하고자 관련 시설 확충과 보수 및 개선, 동호인을 위한 테니스 대회 개최, 일반인에 대한 테니스 보급, 미래를 이끌어나갈 테니스 꿈나무 육성 등 다양한 프로그램을 추진하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.
최근 일궈낸 가장 주목할 만한 성과로 꼽을 수 있는 것이 바로 노후 된 시설 인프라를 새롭게 개·보수한 것이다. 지난해 김해시와의 협의를 이끌어 낸 바 있는 협회는 올 초 예산을 지원받아 삼계동 메인 코트의 본부석 재시공을 완료했다. 삼계동 테니스장는 김해시테니스협회 사무실이 있고 테니스 코트를 14면을 보유하고 있는 곳으로서 김해시 테니스의 중심입니다. 
그러나 그간 시 규모와 도민체전 테니스 준우승의 위상에 걸맞지 않은 낙후된 본부석 시설이 옥의 티로 지적되어 온 것이 사실이다. 이번 재시공을 통해 협회는 김해시장기, 김해가야배 등 김해에서 열리는 전국규모 테니스 대회의 품격과 자부심이 한층 업그레이드될 것으로 기대하고 있다. 이외에도 장유 능동 클레이코트와 동부 클레이 코트의 인조잔디로의 전면 재시공이 이루어져 더욱 많은 동호인들이 보다 쾌적한 환경에서 테니스를 즐길 수 있게 되었다.

“중등 테니스부 창단의 목표 달성 위해 최선 다할 것”
김해시테니스협회에서는 이외에도 김해시민들을 대상으로 매년 2차례에 걸친 무료강습회를 진행하고 있다. 협회 내 지도자 자격증을 갖춘 이들이 직접 강습을 진행하며, 장비도 무료로 지원해주기에 일반 시민들의 관심과 호응이 뜨겁다고 한다. 이러한 행사를 통해 보다 많은 이들에게 테니스의 매력을 알리고, 저변을 확대해나가고자 하는 것이 이들의 목적이다.
올해 협회의 가장 큰 역점사업을 꼽자면 바로 중등부 테니스팀 창단이라 할 수 있다. 현재 협회에 소속된 학교팀은 2011년 창단된 주석초등학교 테니스부 뿐이다. 지난해 9월 회원들이 직접 모금한 장학금 500만 원을 주석초 테니스부에 전달한 바 있는 협회는 올해 5월 김해시 테니스 협회장기 대회때 장학금500만원을 지급하는등 매년 장학금 수여를 통해 어린 테니스 꿈나무들이 시를 대표하는 우수한 선수로 자라날 수 있는 환경을 조성하고자 힘쓰고 있다. 그러나 초등학교 이후 학교팀의 부재는 엘리트 교육의 단절은 물론, 우수선수의 외부 유출로도 이어질 수 있는 문제다. 이에 협회에서는 자체 기금을 통해 중학교팀 창단 준비금 1,500만 원을 마련해놓았으며, 창단 시 매년 500만 원의 장학금을 지원할 계획을 수립했다. 이두희 회장은 “김해시 테니스 협회 소속 회원들의 적극적인 관심과 지원에 감사 드리며, 테니스 엘리트의 육성을 위한 지원은 김해는 물론 한국테니스 발전을 위해 무엇보다 중요한 문제입니다. 또한 김해시에서 키워낸 선수가 국내·외 대회에서 우수한 성적을 거두는 것은 테니스 붐 조성과 함께 시민들의 애향심과 자부심 고취에도 기여할 수 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 이에 이 회장은 시와 도내 관련 부처 및 각 학교와의 협의를 진행하고 있으며, 남은 임기 내에 달성하지 못하더라도 필요하다면 작은 힘이라도 계속해서 보태고 싶다는 바람을 전했다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 “중학팀 창단은 이후 고등학교, 대학교 팀 창단으로 이어져 김해시 테니스의 발전을 견인할 엘리트 육성코스의 첫 신호탄이 될 수 있습니다. 테니스를 사랑하는 모든 분들과 협회 회원 및 동호인 분들, 그리고 김해시의 지속적인 관심과 지역 상공인들의 적극적인 지원을 부탁드립니다”라고 당부의 말을 남겼다. 김해시 테니스의 발전을 위한 이들의 열정과 노력이 값진 결실을 맺게 되길 기대한다.

Improving facilities, building infrastructure
Opened its door 40 years ago, the Gimhae Tennis Association has grown much today to boast around 1,500 members from 35 local clubs through active promotion of friendship and talented players. The association is receiving credits for having contributed to promoting tennis in South Gyeongsang Province and beyond. Inaugurated as the new president of the association last January, Lee Du-hee said “Gimhae is the second largest city in South Gyeongsang Province. It recently has surpassed the 530,000 population through rapid economic growth. Regretfully though, the infrastructure for culture and sports still has many areas to improve and we, the Gimhae Tennis Association, are ambitious to take the initiative by improving facilities and organizing more events and programs.” As part of this effort, the association secured a budget of the city and remodeled the box seats of the main tennis court in Samgye-dong, the largest court in the city, of which 2 out of 14 courts are used for renowned competitions. The remodeling, therefore, is expected to invite more competitions national and local alike. The association also has finished changing the ground of the court in Jangyu-dong to artificial lawn for pleasanter environment. 

Promoting a middle school student tennis team
The members of the Gimhae Tennis Association are highly motivated in fostering talented junior tennis players. The association offers free tennis class twice a year for citizens and the certified instructors also provide necessary equipment. One of the goals of the association this year is to launch a middle school student tennis team. Currently, there is only one school tennis team member; Juseok Elementary School. The association donated 5 million won ($4,471) scholarship to the school last September with hope to promote the players to grow as national tennis hero. The problem is that the absence of upper school tennis teams might throw all those dreams into nothing. For this, the association already has secured 15 million won for founding a middle school student tennis team with continuous yearly support of 5 million won. “Fostering talented junior tennis players are very important for national competitiveness. The middle school team, if succeeded, can lead to high school teams and then to university and it might also turn the city as the hub of Korean tennis. For this, the association will do its best in close cooperation with the city officials and the citizens” emphasized Lee. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
