Moon embraces the wounds of Gwangju in tears
On attending the ceremony that celebrates the 37th anniversary of May 18 Democratic Movement held in Gwangju, President Moon showed his firm will to reinvestigate and reveal the truth of the armed crackdown during the movement. Unlike the somewhat restricted previous ceremonies, it was open to all and 10,000 people alongside renowned social and political figures attended the ceremony on the day. President Moon on his way to his seat shook hands with the citizens, the act which was unprecedented and it took him 5 minutes to reach his seat. It also has been 4 years since the impeached former president Park last appeared in the ceremony. In his congratulatory speech Moon said “The new government will rebuild the democracy based on the spirits of May 18 Democratic Movement and the Candlelight Revolution. The Moon Administration is built on the extension of the May 18 Democratic Movement, the Democratic Movement of June 1987, the People’s Government and the Participatory Government… The new government will exert a great effort in revealing the truth of the armed crackdown of the May 18 Democratic Movement and will find those responsible who gave the order to fire. We will also prevent the destroying the evidence and distortions of history… I will keep my pledge to put the spirit of May 18 Democratic Movement in the constitutional text and opened the age of a true democratic republic that succeeds the spirit… Let me take this opportunity to ask you a cooperation and support for fulfilling my will of amending the constitution.”

Singing in unison ‘A March for the Beloved’
Unsung for 9 years under the rules of the former presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, the symbolic democratic movement song ‘A March for the Beloved’ was finally sung in unison on the order of the new President Moon Jae-in who said “A March for the Beloved’ is not just a song but the symbol of the blood, the souls and the spirit of May 18 Democratic Movement. Singing the song, therefore, is to keep the honor of those who made sacrifice and to remember the history of democracy. We sing the song in unison today and it will enliven the spirit of Gwangju and end the unnecessary conflicts over whether we needed to sing the song or not.” Moon also said “The placard sent to the mothers of April 16 (the day of Sewol ferry disaster occurred) from the mothers of May 18 reads ‘We know your bitterness. But cheer up. Keep on your feet’. I take this as the voice of scolding the nation that has not protected its people. And I will make sure that indifference must not repeat again.” Moon’s speech was followed by the heartbroken story of Kim So-hyung who lost her father to May 18 Democratic Movement, the day she was born. On hearing the story, President Moon could not help his eyes brimming with tears and he stood up and came forward to embrace her. By watching what Moon did, the attendees gave a loud applaud and shout also in tears to both Kim and Moon.
