Paraguay Celebrates 206 Years of Independence

200 honorary guests gathered together to give warm congratulations
Paraguay celebrates May 15th as the day that the people of Paraguay achieved independence from Spain’s colonial rule. In accordance with the tradition that the Paraguayan people in every corner of the country celebrate the day with a variety of festivals, the Paraguayan Embassy to Korea held the 206th anniversary of Independence Day ceremony at Atrium of Millennium Seoul Hilton on the same day from 6:30pm.

200 honorary guests including foreign diplomatic envoys in Korea and government and civil representatives gave warm congratulations to the 206th anniversary of Independence Day of Paraguay.

In his congratulatory speech, the Paraguayan ambassador H.E. Raul Silvero said “In the year of the 206th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Paraguay, we’d like to pay tribute to our brave ancestors from whom we have inherited our great homeland… This year is a special one, as we celebrate 55 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Paraguay and the Republic of Korea, whom we congratulate for the presidential elections. In this occasion, I would like to mention that the President of the Republic of Paraguay Horacio Cartes, offered on behalf of the Government and the people of Paraguay the sincerest congratulations and wishes of the greatest success to President Moon Jae-In, wishing to further deepen the ties of friendship and cooperation.”

Heo Tae-wan, the director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, then answered to Mr. Silvero with his congratulatory message “It is a great pleasure for me to attend this important event that commemorates the 206th Anniversary of the National Independence of Paraguay. I would like to convey to the people and the Government of Paraguay congratulations and the affection of our government.”

Choi Sung-ho, the director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency, then proposed a toast and said “On behalf of KOICA, I extend my best wishes to the people of Paraguay as they celebrate 206 anniversary of Independence Day. KOICA values our strong partnership with Paraguay and we are committed to advancing our shared interests, including meeting to achieve SDGs(Sustainable Development Goals), expanding basic needs for health care and trade economic opportunities through implementing our development cooperation programs according to Plan Nacional de Desarrollo (PND) Paraguay 2014-2030.”

The honorary foreign ambassadors and their wives then joined the Silveros for cake cutting and it was followed by traditional Paraguayan dance performance which the honorary guests were much delighted with. The Silveros cordially shook hands with each guest and expressed their deep gratitude.

Paraguay achieved independence on 15 May 1811
Like most countries in Latin America, the colonization of Paraguay by Espana started around 1536. After the years and years of persistent struggle for independence by the native Guarani, the Paraguayans eventually achieved the independence on 15 May 1811.

The official name of Paraguay is Republica del Paraguay. Located in the central Latin America, the country shares borders with Brazil to the east, Argentina to the southwest and Bolivia to the northwest. The name Paraguay came from the native Guarani language ‘Pararaguay’ meaning ‘from the great river’. The river here is the Parana River. It is the second longest river in Latin America after the Amazon and it joins the Iguassu River where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina share the borders. For this reason, the river runs through the painful history of the war against Brazil and Argentina that had brought devastation to Paraguay at one time.

H.E. Raul Silvero emphasizes on continuous and dynamic cooperation
<Power Korea> actually had an interview with H.E. Raul Silvero for the March issue on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between S. Korea and Paraguay this year. In the interview, Mr. Silvero emphasized on continuous and dynamic cooperation between the two countries by pointing out that Paraguay was exporting stevia, mate tea, leather and soybean to Korea and Korea semiconductor, cars, LED light and computer to Paraguay.

There also had been active cooperation in the fields of science, technology and immigration and Korea’s high technology, K-POP and food were well received by the people in Paraguay. In response, the Paraguayan Embassy to Korea was actively participating in various festivals held in Korea to promote Paraguayan businesses and culture, said Mr. Silvero.

Mr. Silvero also mentioned that more than 6,000 Koreans were living in Paraguay and the Paraguayan Embassy would find more ways to promote Korean businesses in Paraguay with particular interest in tourism industry.

<Power Korea> once more congratulates the 206th anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Paraguay and is looking forward an abundance of cooperation this year.
