매화가 진채를 만나 새롭게 태어나다
“자개와 칠보 재료를 통해 사대부들의 고결한 정신과 인간세계를 표현”

조선 시대 사대부들은 의인화 수단으로 사군자의 소재인 매·난·국·죽의 고고한 자태를 흠모했다. 후손들은 과거를 반추하고 경배하는 차원에서 당시의 화풍을 전수하고 계승했지만, 만약 선조들이 미래의 바뀐 시대상을 소재에 변화를 준다면 어떻게 표현할지에 대해 관심을 두었을까? 동양화가 이군우 작가는 그림을 통해 그 시절 사대부들의 절개와 고결한 정신을 진채화를 통해 보여주고 있다.

한국화의 지조와 개성을 동시에 상징하며, 전통과 현대의 공존을 꾀하는 동양화가 이군우 작가는 자연의 아름다움으로부터 영감을 받는다고 한다. 그래서 자연은 어린 시절 추억이 담긴 사랑방이자 푸근한 어머니 같은 존재이며, 미학의 근원이기에 작가는 늘 자연 속에서 인생의 희로애락을 찾아 작가의 심미안을 표현하고 있다. 작가는 1993년부터 7년간 야사와 전통의 담에서 부적 같은 기복에 의지하는 무력한 존재의 인간 일면을 작품화하고 있다. 이 시기는 ‘전통 정서의 포착과 재료의 변용’이라는 주제로 자개를 사용해 ‘수묵과 채색’의 틀에서 조금씩 벗어나기 시작한 시기다. 전통과 현대를 동시에 해석하는 것이 이군우는 진부한 명제라고 단언하며, 2001년부터는 그 상호보완 하며 평면에서 입체형상을 추구하는 것으로 해답을 찾았다. 여전히 매화이라는 전통 소재를 경배하기에, 마른 가지에 꽃을 피우는 매화가 등장하였으며, 재료로는 순지, 천, 장지에 먹을 비롯해 황토와 같은 자연의 색채, 칠보를 이용하여 감각적으로 작품을 제작해 나갔다. 작가는 화광매보의 취상설(取象設)에 따라 꽃잎 다섯 장이 종횡을 바라보도록 완만한 운필로 정밀한 꽃술을 묘사하였으며, 다양한 꽃눈과 꽃망울, 봉우리와 어우러진 흰 매화를 통해 생기있는 나뭇가지를 표현했다.
반면 화려한 흰 매화 뒤에는 분청사기와 장독, 그리고 운치 있는 격자 장지문으로 채웠다. 배경은 몰골(沒骨)법으로 화면을 처리하고, 주제는 구륵(鉤勒)법으로 시선을 사로잡은 작가의 채색화는 한국에서 잘 사용하지 않은 형광안료를 사용함으로 마침내 창의성과 개성을 드러내기에 이른다.

전통 소재로부터 시작해 가슴에 와 담는 미래지향적 시도를 이어가
이군우 작가는 23회의 개인전과 400여 회 단체전을 하였으며, 대한민국 미술대전 및 각종 미술대전에서 심사위원으로 활동하였다. 홍익대, 고려대, 숙명여대 등에서 외래교수를 역임하고 수많은 후학을 양성하였으며, 지역 미술 발전에도 많은 공헌을 하였다, 이를 인정받아 이 작가는 2014년 부천미술 ‘올해의 작가’를 수상하였다. 그리고 창의적 표현으로 더욱 주목을 받고 있다. 30여 년 전에는 존재하지 않았던 디지털 아트, 뉴미디어 아트에서 더 많은 크로스오버를 추구하여 경향에서 자신의 채색화에 ‘매체를 혼용하여 신개념을 도입하였다. 이는 인간의 공감각을 이용해 시각적 형상과 청각적 형상이 주는 서로 다른 이미지를 느낄 수 있게 하는 새로운 개념이다. 이 작가는 광소자의 시간차 도달에서 착안해, 형광안료의 양을 각 소재에 적절하게 안배하여 어두운 곳에서 작품 속 물체가 시신경에 도달하는 시간을 달리하는 다변화된 메시지 전달과 주제의식을 뚜렷하게 표현하고 있다. 갈색, 먹색, 그리고 어두운 황토, 녹색 사이로 강렬한 흰 빛을 대조시키며, 상반된 채도를 강조하는 방식도 사용하고 있다. <기억 속으로> 연작에서는 매화봉우리나 일렬로 만개한 꽃 표현으로 줄기 없이도 매화 가지를 표현하기도 하였다, 장지와 천에 황토와 칠보, 그리고 야광 채색이라는 표현으로 무채색 배경 속 흰 매화는 장지와 더 잘 어울릴 수 있어 이를 결합했다. 물론 이러한 파격적인 표현 속에서도 전통문화의 가치는 그대로 존재시키면서도 경이로운 자연의 섭리를 표현하고 있다. 또한, 매화를 통해 고고한 사대부들의 정신세계를 담아야 한다는 생각을 놓지 않았다. 그리고 인간의 가치를 담아야 한다는 사대부들처럼 고전적인 이 작가의 미적 심미안 또한 건재하다. 전통과 자연, 이들의 콜라보레이션의 이상향을 추구하는 이 작가는 2013년부터 미디어 콘서트, 스마트러닝센터 초대전 등으로 젊은 세대들에게 한국화의 진미를 알리며, 예술적 가치는 시대를 초월한 것임을 소개하고 있다. 옛 사대부들에게는 고고한 설매의 형상을 떠올리는 것만으로도 세파에 흔들리지 않는 수준이었다. 사대부들은 21세기  의 신소재 활용을 통해 신·구의 요소로 조화를 이뤄낸 이 작가의 창의력 넘치는 <매화 사랑>은 그림과 같이 진화되기를 기대했을지 모른다.

Proud loneliness of apricot blossoms shine in new véhicule 
Oriental painter Lee Gun-woo finds inspiration from the beauty of nature. He exerts his effort in bringing harmony to tradition and modernity and symbolism to fidelity and personality of Korean painting. For Lee, nature is like a guest room where his childhood memory bursts open and the warm heart of his mother from which he finds the root of esthetic value. For the last 7 years since 1993, Lee has focused on helpless existence of man who depend on undulating talisman, the period he started to break out from the frame of ink and colors of mother of pearl done under the title 'capturing traditional sentiment and changes of materials'. Then from 2001, he pursued the three-dimensional shape on the flat surface for harmony between tradition and modernity. While the apricot blossoms still takes the main stage of the canvas, he added Korean papers, clothes, ink and enamel as new materials. He depicted in detail the stamen and pistil of the flower with five petals facing each other in length and breadth backed up by a variety of flower buds and the branches of white apricot blossoms. Behind the white apricot blossoms are a grayish-blue-powdered celadon, crock and paper sliding door. The background is treated with contourless ink and colors while the theme is emphasized with the contour bound with lines and colors filled inside. However, the use of florescent pigment rare in Korean painting is what makes the works of Lee stand out.

From traditional materials to futuristic attempt
Lee has held 23 solo exhibitions and participated in about 400 group exhibitions. He served as a judge of various art competitions and a visiting professor at Hongik University, Korea University and Sookmyung Women's University while making contribution to development of regional art. In recognition of his achievement, Lee received 'The Artist of the Month' of 2014 Bucheon Art.He boldly tried crossover with digital art and new media and introduced a new concept by mixing materials that gives both visual and acoustic images. He uses contrast between brown, ink black, dark red brown and green through the strong white light and the method that emphasizes incompatible chroma. In the series work <Into Memory>, he expressed apricot branches without the stems but with fully blossomed flowers and the buds by using Korean paper, clothes, red clay, enamel and florescent coloring while keeping the traditional value and the providence of nature intact. Collaborating tradition with nature, Lee started to engage in invitational exhibitions of media concerts and smart learning centers for young generations from 2013. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
