5월로 결정된 2017년 대선, 대한민국 제19대 대통령 누가 될 것인가?
4월 초까지의 각 당 경선 통해 최종 5명의 후보자로 압축
2016년 12월 9일 박근혜 대통령에 대한 탄핵소추가 국회에서 찬성 234표, 반대 56표, 무효 7표, 기권 2표의 압도적인 표차로 최종 가결되면서 박근혜 대통령에 대한 직무정지가 이뤄졌다. 이에 따라 작년 10월부터 이어진 국정농단 사태와 탄핵 정국으로 대한민국은 유례없는 혼란을 겪고 있었다. 한편 지난 3월 10일 오전 11시, 헌법재판소는 재판관 8인의 만장일치 인용으로 박근혜 전 대통령을 파면시켰다. 이정미 전 재판관 소장 대행은 “피청구인의 행위는 대통령의 지위와 권한을 남용한 것으로서 공정한 직무수행이라고 할 수 없으며, 헌법, 국가공무원법, 공직자윤리법 등을 위배한 것입니다. 또한, 재단법인 미르와 케이스포츠의 설립, 이권 개입에 직, 간접적으로 도움을 준 피청구인의 행위는 기업의 재산권을 침해하였을 뿐만 아니라, 기업경영의 자유를 침해한 것입니다. 그리고 피청구인의 지시 또는 방치에 따라 직무상 비밀에 해당하는 많은 문건이 유출된 점은 국가공무원법의 비밀엄수의무를 위배한 것입니다.” 등으로 탄핵 사유를 밝혔다.

19대 대선의 날짜는 당초 올해 12월 20일로 정해져 있었지만 박근혜 전 대통령의 탄핵으로 오는 5월 9일에 치러지게 되었다. MBN과 매일경제가 여론조사기관 리얼미터에 의뢰해 발표한 리얼미터의 3월 3주차 차기대선후보 지지율 조사에 따르면 문재인 전 대표가 36.6%, 안희정 충남도지사가 15.6%, 안철수 전 대표가 12.0%, 이재명 성남시장이 10.8%, 홍준표 경남도지사가 9.8%, 심상정 정의당 대표가 3.9%로 집계되었다. 한편 대선을 한 달 여 앞두고 각 당에서는 최종 경선을 통해 대선 출마 후보를 선출했다. 최종 확정된 대통령 후보는 더불어민주당 문재인 후보, 자유한국당 홍준표 후보, 국민의당 안철수 후보, 바른정당 유승민 후보, 정의당 심상정 후보다.

문재인, 지난 3일 더불어민주당 대선후보 경선에서 57%의 득표율로 선출돼
문재인 후보가 지난 3월 21일 저녁 방송된 'MBC 100분토론'에 출연하여 자신의 생각을 밝혔다. 문재인 후보는 "현재 국민들은 적폐청산을 말하고 있는데, 적폐청산 가운데 가장 중요한 부분 중의 하나가 저는 ‘언론적폐’라고 생각합니다. 특히 공영방송이 제 역할을 했더라면 이렇게까지 대통령이 탄핵되고 아주 중대한 범죄의 피의자로 소환되는 사태는 발생하지 않았을 것 아닌가 라고 생각합니다."라고 말했다. 연이어 "그런데 전(前) 정권은 공영방송을 장악하며 국민의 방송이 아닌 정권의 방송으로 만든 결과를 낳았습니다. 같은 이유로 많은 공영방송들이 다 망가졌는데 MBC도 아주 심하게 무너졌다고 생각합니다."라고 말하며 방송•언론에 대한 돌직구를 날렸다. 그는 “MBC 해직 언론인들은 소송에서 승소했지만 사측에서 대법원에 상고해 아직도 복직을 안 시키고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 이번 박근혜•최순실 게이트도 제대로 보도하지 않고 있습니다.”라며 “MBC 지배구조를 개선하자는 요구에도 탄핵 정국 속에서 후기 사장 인사를 강행하는가 하면 탄핵 다큐멘터리 방영을 취소하고 제작 PD를 전보했습니다”라고 강렬하게 비판했다. 문 후보는 끝으로 우리 공영방송, 공공성언론의 자유를 회복하는 것이 가장 시급하다고 생각한다며 토론의 끝을 맺었다.

한편, 문재인 후보는 인천 소래포구 어시장 화재 현장을 찾아 조속한 복구를 위한 지원을 약속해, 주목을 받았다. 18일 당일, 소래포구를 방문한 문 후보는 소방당국으로부터 상황 보고를 받은 뒤 "상인들이 빨리 영업을 재개할 수 있도록 돕겠다."라며 "관련 기관에서 긴급생활안정자금 등을 조속히 지원할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다."고 밝혔다.
한편 지난 3일 더불어민주당의 경선 결과 문재인 후보가 최종 대선 후보로 선출되었다. 총 4차례 경선의 누적 득표 합산 결과 936,419표로 득표율 57%를 차지한 것이다. 문 후보는 수락연설을 통해 "국익보다 앞서는 이념은 없습니다. 국민보다 중요한 이념도 없습니다. 이 땅에서 좌우를 나누고 보수·진보를 나누는 분열의 이분법은 이제 쓰레기통으로 보내야 합니다. 우리 마음과 머리에 남은 대립과 갈등, 분열의 찌꺼기까지 가차 없이 버려야 합니다. 저는 오늘, 대한민국 새로운 국민의 역사를 시작합니다. 분열의 시대와 단호히 결별하고 정의로운 통합의 시대로 나아가겠습니다"라고 밝혔다.

홍준표, 자유한국당 대선 후보로 최종 선출된 ‘스트롱 맨’ 
홍준표 후보는 청주지방경찰청, 부산지방검찰청 울산지청, 서울지방검찰청 남부지청 검사 등으로 공직생활을 시작해 1999년 제15대 국회위원으로 정치 생활을 시작했다. 홍 후보는 검사 출신의 정치인으로서 자신의 정치 여정을 몸소 증명하는 행보를 이어오고 있으며, 직설적인 메시지로 대중에게 다가가고 있다. 2012년부터 제35~36대 경남도지사를 역임한 홍 후보는 지난 31일 소속 정당인 자유한국당의 대선 후보로 최종 선출되었다.
홍 후보는 선출 이후부터 ‘보수 대통합’을 위한 행보를 지속적으로 이어오고 있다. 홍 후보는 지난 3일 이명박 전 대통령의 집무실을 찾아 이 전 대통령을 예방하고 보수 대통합에 대한 뜻을 거듭 밝히기도 했다. 또한 홍 후보는 대구․경북(TK)의 민심 잡기 행보를 연이어 오고 있다. 홍 후보는 지난 3일 여의도 당사에서 열린 사무처 월례조회에서 “청와대가 건재하고 친박들이 튼튼했으면 내가 후보가 될 수 있었겠나. 보수우파가 한 마음이 돼서 이 나라의 강력한 우파정권을 만들어보겠다”라고 밝히며 이번 선거에 필승을 다짐했다. 한편, 홍 후보는 31일 수락연설을 통해 “이 당은 홍준표를 중심으로 새로운 당이 됐다. 이제 대한민국에서 여태 나라를 건국하고 산업화를 이루고 또 YS를 통해 민주화를 이루고 이제 이 나라를 선진강국으로 만들어갈 세력이 자유한국당이다. 5월 9일 강력한 리더십을 가진 우파 정권이 탄생할 수 있도록 여러분이 힘을 모아주시기를 바란다”라고 밝혔다.

안철수, 지지율 반등과 함께 호남 표심 공략 나서
지난 2012년 대선에서 이른바 ‘안철수 신드롬’을 일으켰을 정도로 지지자들의 열광적인 호응을 얻어온 국민의당 안철수 후보는 기업인 시절부터 꾸준한 추진력과 언행일치의 비전 등을 통해 확고한 지지기반을 획득하였으며 이로 인해 기성 정치세력에 환멸을 느끼던 정치 지지자들을 하나로 단결시켰다는 평을 얻었다. 영남과 호남으로 나뉘어 대립을 일삼던 기존의 정치계에서 말 그대로 새로운 지지기반을 개척한 것이다. 특히 작년 4월 펼쳐진 총선에서 국민의당이 신당으로서는 이례적으로 많은 좌석수를 획득하며 국내 정치사에 3당 체제를 열어젖힌 것 역시 안 후보의 능력과 무관하지 않다.
한편 안 후보는 지난 21일 첫 순회 경선지인 호남 표심 공략에 나섰다. 안 후보는 전라북도 무주리조트의 대한노인회 우정연수원 개관식에 참석해 노인 정책 공약을 발표했다. 지역 경로당을 ‘어르신 건강생활 지원센터’로 확대 개편하고 건강 지원에 필요한 간호사 등 인력을 배치하며 지역의사회나 건강보험공단 등과 연계하는 방안 등을 골자로 한 공약이다. 또한 같은 날 제주도에서는 안 후보를 지지하는 도내 인사 70여 명이 참석해 ‘국민광장제주’의 발대식이 진행되었다. ‘국민광장제주’는 송영남 전 제주호남향우회장, 고철희 전 한국농업경영인중앙연합회 부회장 등이 공동대표로 운영되며 안철수 국민캠프 총괄본부장인 최경환 의원(광주광역시 광주북구을)도 함께 참석했다. 한편 안 후보는 지난 4일 열린 국민의당 경선에서 최종 득표율 75.01%의 독주를 선보이며 최종후보로 선출되었다.

유승민, 합리적 중도로서 ‘건강한 보수’ 만들겠다 다짐해
지난 28일 바른정당의 대선후보 경선을 통해 62.9%의 득표율을 보이며 최종 대선 후보로 선출된 유승민 후보는 2000년 한나라당 여의도 연구소장을 시작으로 2011년에는 한나라당 최고위원, 2015년 새누리당 원내대표를 지내는 등 새누리당의 충신으로서 그 역할을 다해 왔다. 그만큼 유 후보의 바른정당으로의 독립은 TK 정치사상 초유의 사건이었다. 대선 후보 선출 이후부터 보수의 본산인 대구․경북 지역의 민심을 잡기 위한 행보를 보이고 있는 것 역시 이와 무관하지 않다.
지난 31일 유 후보는 경북 영주 지역의 선친 묘소를 참배하고 지역 마라톤 대회 개회식에 참여하는 한편, 3일에는 대구 지역을 찾아 '유(유승민) 캔 두(Can Do)'를 내건 바른정당 대구시당에서 개최한 현장회의에 참여했다. 그는 "누가 앞으로 5년간 절대 위기의 대한민국을 맡아 대통령직을 국민이 원하는 대로 수행할 수 있을지 우리 스스로 확신을 가지고 국민께 알리고 오늘 대구·경북에서 그것을 시작하는 날"이라고 밝혔다. 또한 보수의 심장인 대구 서문시장을 방문한 유 후보는 "진박에 무너진 TK 자존심을 되살리겠다"며 지지를 호소했다. 유 후보는 같은 날 MBC 라디오 ‘신동호의 시선집중’에 출연해 홍준표 후보에 대해 “무자격 후보”라고 언급하며 정치적 공세를 이어갔다.

심상정, 민생공약 앞장서 발표하며 국민의 목소리 청취
심상정 후보는 지난 2월 16일 열린 정의당 대통령후보 경선에서 80.71%의 압도적인 승리를 통해 정의당의 최종 대통령 후보로 선출되었다. 심 후보는 정치인으로서의 인생을 시작하기 전, 구로3공단 남성전기노동조합 교육부장, 서울노동운동연합 중앙위원장, 전국금속노조 사무처장 등 국내 노동운동의 대표주자로서 그 이름을 널리 알렸다. 현재까지도 노동운동 분야의 주요 인사들이 대부분 남성인 것을 감안했을 때 여성으로서 노동운동에서 뚜렷한 성과를 낸 것은 주목할 만하다. 이후 심 후보는 민주노동당, 진보신당, 정의당 등을 거치며 민생현장의 목소리를 가장 먼저 청취하는 행보를 이어 왔다.
심 후보는 건강보험의 보장률을 OECD 평균인 80%까지 높이는 등의 내용을 담은 보건의료정책과 4차 산업혁명의 물결 속에서 민간의 창의성과 혁신을 이끌어낼 복지국가 건설, 외고·자사고·국제고를 폐지하고 직업계고 비중을 전체 고교의 50% 수준까지 높이는 등의 내용을 담은 교육개혁 공약 등 민생과 밀접하게 연관된 공약들을 속속 발표하고 있다. 또한 심 후보는 2월 17일 수락연설을 통해 “대한민국 공동체를 지키기 위해 청춘과 생명을 불사른 수많은 무명용사들과 민주열사들을 기억합니다. 이 얼굴들이야말로 저와 정의당이 믿고 따라야 할 나침반입니다. 이분들의 눈빛만 기억하고, 앞으로 나아갈 것입니다. 연대의 따뜻함이 넘쳐나고, 정의가 상식이 되는 선조들께 부끄럽지 않은 모습의 대한민국을 만들겠습니다”라고 밝힌 바 있다.

Who will lead Korea?
On 10 March 2017 at 11 am, the Korean people wait in silence and uneasiness for the decision of the court on President Park's impeachment. More than 6 months from last October when the influence peddling by Choi Soon-sil, Park's confidante, was first exposed by the JTBC, the Korean people suffered much from disappointment and anger and they took to the street to call for immediate resignation of the now former president Park which eventually led to her impeachment. After 21 minutes of the verdict, the acting chief justice Lee Jung-mi announced the decision made unanimously by the 8 constitutional judges to expel Park from the Blue House. The court found no evidence on the abuse of nomination power which violated the essence of the career civil service system and the infringement on freedom of the press, adding that, the term 'sincerity' in carrying out her duty to control the Sewol ferry disaster was obscure although she was responsible to do her duty sincerely, thus made it hard to be the reasons to impeach her. The court, however, found her violation of the Constitutional Law, the Government Officials Act and the Public Servant's Ethics that she allowed influence peddling of her confidante Choi Soon-sil and abused power of authority, adding that, she refused investigation of both the prosecutor and the special prosecutor which she promised as well as the search and confiscation of the Blue House, the case which she clearly showed her lack of will in protecting the Constitutional Law. While the sacked and disgraced president is likely to be on trials soon, the official day of the 19th presidential election has been set on 9th May.

Moon wins the primary with 57% votes
Likely to be the next president Moon Jae-in said on the MBC 100 Minute Debate broadcast on 21 March "The Korean people are voicing together to clean up the deep-rooted evils of our society and I think the media among them are needed it most. If the public service broadcast did its role properly, the impeachment of Park and being investigated as main suspect wouldn't have happened" adding that "The Park regime controled the public service broadcast and has turned it to be the broadcast of the regime rather than of the public. Many broadcast were ruined by the same reason and the MBC is no exception. The dismissed employees of the MBC who won the case at the lawsuit, for example, have not been resumed their seat as the management is appealing the case to the Supreme Court and the MBC also has been rather reluctant to broadcast properly the Choi gate. In addition, the MBC pushed ahead the appointment of the new CEO despite the demand for structural improvement and it even canceled broadcasting the impeachment documentary and sent the producer to other place." On hearing the news of the fire on Soraepogu, Moon visited the site and promised a speedy recovery and support. Meanwhile on 3 last month, Moon won the primary with the total of 936,419 votes (57%). "National interest comes before all other things. So does the people. Whether you are right or left, whether your are conservative or progressive must go into a rubbish bin. We have to throw away conflicts, confrontation and division from our head. Today, we start a new history of Korea that sails towards integration and justice over divisions" said Moon in his acceptance speech. 

Ahn wins the primary with 75.01% votes
He created 'Ahn Cheol Soo Syndrome' in the 2012 presidential election. He secured cement support from the people especially from those who are fed up with the established politicians for his drive and consistency in speech and action. The fever continued when The People's Party created yet another sensation in the general election in April last year and opened the era of the three party politics for the first time in Korea. Ahn is targeting Jeolla Province, which is the first battle field for the primary of the People's Party, to secure the votes. He attended the opening ceremony of Woojung Training Center of the Korean Senior Citizens Association in Muju Deogyusan Resort, North Jeolla Province, and presented his policy for elderly people: turning the senior citizen centers to 'senior citizen health support centers' with carers or nurses on the spot, and connecting them with local doctor's associations and organizations and/or the National Health Insurance Service. On the same day, 70 of Ahn supporters in Jeju held a launching ceremony of 'Public Square Jeju' which is co-chaired by Jeju South Jeolla Province Hometown Alumni president Song Yong-nam and the former vice president of the Korea Advanced Farmers Federation Go Chul-hee. Meanwhile on 4 last month, Ahn won the primary with 75.01% votes. 
Sim wins the primary with the landslide victory of 80.71% votes 
Sim Sang-jung of the Justice Party won the primary with the overwhelming 80.71% votes on 26 February. Before stepping into politics, she rose to fame with her labor movement career serving as the education department head of the Namsung Electricity Union in the Guro Industrial Complex zone 3, the central head of the Federation of Seoul Lobar Movement and the secretary general of the Korean Metal Worker's Union. It is notable that she has made a strong presence in the men-led labor movement. She then pushed forward her political career through the Democratic Labor Party, the New Progressive Party and the current Justice Party. As the presidential election pledges, Sim has presented up to 80% of the health insurance guarantee based on the OECD standard, building a strong welfare country and abolishing all special high schools and raising the percentage of the vocational high schools up to 50% instead. Sim said in her acceptance speech "I remember those patriotic martyrs for democracy who sacrificed their youth and life. They truly are the face of me and the Justice Party. They are the compass we have to take directions with. I will only remember their keen eyes and march forward. I will make a proud Korea that is up to their reputations." 

Yoo wins the primary with 62.9% votes
Yoo Seong-min of the Bareun Party won the primary with 62.9% votes on 28 last month. Starting from the director of the Hannara Party Yeouido Research Center in 2000, he rose to a member of the supreme council of the party the next year and to the floor leader of the Saenuri Party the following year. It was quite a surprise, since the Park-Choi Gate, when he quit the parties to establish the Bareun Party. For many conservatives especially of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, his political home with strong conservative presence, opinions about him is divided either good or bad. Separating his political stance from those of the pro-Park's under the slogan 'rational middle-grounder', Yoo is actively engaging in various events in the region to secure support from them. On visiting Seomun Market in Daegu, Yoo said "I will stand up the pride of the province fallen down by Park and the pro-Park's." At the MBC radio 'Shin Dong-ho's Eye Catching', Yoo said "Hong Jun-pyo is an unqualified election candidate." (Hong currently is on a trial over accepting bribery.) 

Hong wins the primary with 54.15% votes
Hong Jun-pyo of the Liberal Korea Party won the primary with 54.15% votes on 31 last month. Hong served as a prosecutor at the National Police Agency Chungju, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office Ulsan and the Supreme Prosecutor's Office Southern Seoul before moving on to his political career as a 15th lawmaker in 1999. Known for his outspoken character, he served as the 35th and 36th governor of South Gyeongsang Province since 2012. He is branding himself as the one who will bring 'the great consolidation of the conservatives' and visited Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province to secure support while paying a visit to the former president Lee Myung-bak. Hong said in his acceptance speech "The Liberal Korea Party was reborn with me as the new leader. The Liberal Korea Party will lead Korea to an advanced and strong nation. Gather together the strength and vote for the right party that has strong leadership on 9th May."
