유치원생에서 만학도까지 3,500여 개 한자를 외우게 만든 탁월한 교육법, ‘연상기법’을 개발해 한자는 암기하기 어렵고 힘들다는 선입견을 깨고 파죽지세 같은 한자 교육 열기를 만들어 낸 경기한자, ㈜밝은한자의 장화순 대표가 최근 한능원의 총괄본부장 및 대외협력국장으로 위축되었다. 유수의 언론들이 찬사를 보낸 한자교육의 달인이자, 2017년 <한국을 빛낸 사람들 대상>을 수상하며 더욱 본격적인 한자교육 강자로서의 행보를 펼치고 있는 장 대표를 만나본다.

국내 최대/최다 한자시험자격증자 배출양성의 요람으로 자리할 한능원
2019년으로 예상되는 초등학교 교과서의 학습어휘 한자어 표기 정책을 필두로 대중들에게 한자에 대한 관심이 뜨겁다. 지난 2015년 12월 설립된 ㈜밝은한자, 그리고 4년차 운영 중인 경기한자를 통해 한자를 쉽고 재미있게 가르쳐 온 장화순 대표가 실용적인 한자교육의 성과를 바탕으로, 총괄본부장과 대외협력국장을 겸임하게 되었다. 2001년 창립되어 교과부 소속이자 1-3급 국가공인 한자자격검정시험을 관리, 운영하는 한능원은 탁월한 장학제도를 실시하고 있으며, 고려대 행정학과와 MOU를 맺어 재학생들의 한자2급 자격 취득 및 전국 학생들을 대상으로 한자의 대중화에 힘쓰고 있다. 장 대표는 지역본부장으로 한능원과 인연을 맺은 이래, 경기본부장에서 올해 총괄본부장으로 위촉되어 한능원을 국내 최대 한자시험 공인단체로 만들기 위한 과업에 박차를 가하고 있다. 지난해 약 2천여 명이었던 ㈜밝은한자의 회원을 3,800여 명으로 증강시켜 한자교육자로서의 저력을 입증한 장 대표는 올해 1만 명 회원을 목표로 하며 한능원의 내실을 함께 키워나갈 것이라고 전한다. 장 대표는 한자의 급수를 보유한 아이들은 그렇지 못한 아이들에 비해 독해, 문해력에서 월등한 사실을 언급한다. 장 대표는 단지 공부하거나 가르치기 귀찮다는 이유로 한글전용 교육을 고수한다면, 교육과정에서 한자어를 쓰지 않는 과목이 거의 없을 정도로 한자의 비중이 높은 현실 속에서는 지식과 역사의식을 겸비할 수 있는 기회를 스스로 차단하는 것이나 다름없다고 강조한다. 한능원에서는 단지 쓰고 외우는 것이 아니라, 사자성어, 한시, 동의어 및 반의어로 세분화하여 한자를 효과적으로 가르쳐 최고 급수인 사범급수까지 딸 수 있는 과정을 운영하고, 장 대표는 여기에 ‘연상기법’을 통해 성공한 한자교육의 왕도를 제시해 한자보급을 대중화할 예정이다.

사반공배(事半功倍). 장 대표와 함께라면 이 사자성어의 의미처럼 적은 노력을 들여도 쉽게 한자를 배울 수 있다. 하루 3시간씩 자며 형설지공(螢雪之功)과 자고현량(刺股懸梁)의 노력 끝에 한자 1급 자격증을 취득했다는 장 대표는, 많은 이들이 한자를 적은 노력으로 많이 익힐 수 있도록 한자교육 대중화를 연구해 왔다. 강사가 태권도 학원 등을 직접 방문해 시간과 비용에 쫓기는 학부모의 부담을 덜어주는 교육방침, 자체 개발한 스토리텔링 한자교육인 ‘연상기법’, TV조선의 <광화문의 아침> 코너인 <세상을 보는 연상한자>를 통해 수많은 이들을 한자전문가로 만든 장 대표는, 1만 명 회원유치 목표를 세운 올해 1월 ㈜밝은한자를 서울 천호동으로 이전하며 한자 설명회 등을 준비하고 있다. 개인적으로 운영 중인 경기한자, 전국규모의 법인인 ㈜밝은한자를 한능원과 함께 더욱 성장시키고자 하는 장 대표는, 경제적인 가격대로 일반인들이 출퇴근과 여가시간을 이용해 쉽게 한자 자격증을 딸 수 있는 여건을 조성하고 있다. 이를 위해 각 50분 6편으로 구성된 세상을 보는 연상한자의 <시즌1> 동영상을 출시해 좋은 반응을 얻었으며, 2월에는 같은 횟수와 편수의 <시즌2> 제작이 끝나는 대로 동영상 어플리케이션을 3월 경 함께 공개할 예정이다. 또한 태블릿 PC에 동영상을 넣어 함께 판매하는 사업을 추진하며 장차 한자의 본거지인 중국 수출 및 중국 유학생들을 위한 콘텐츠로 출격시키겠다는 장 대표는, <시즌2>가 끝나면 한자급수를 딴 유소년들을 함께 출연시켜 어린이들이 시청할 교육동영상도 제작할 것이라고 한다. 또한 장 대표는 3월에는 인기 케이블 TVN에 월 80회 이상 ㈜밝은한자의 광고를 송출할 것이며, 2018년에는 ㈜밝은한자를 상장시켜 해외진출의 기반으로 삼겠다고 전했다. 경기한자를 통해 ‘한자와 국어’등 많은 교재들을 제작, 납품하고 연상기법을 연구, 강의하며 사업가로서도 자질을 보이고 있는 장 대표는 많은 아이들의 한자 이름을 무료로 지어주는 취미를 갖고 있다. 또한 자격증보다는 자기관리를 위해 평생공부를 실천하여 세무사 1급, 네일아트 자격을 취득했으며, ㈜밝은한자의 부엉이이미지 특허 과정에서 영감을 얻어 변리사 자격증도 공부 중이라고 한다. 마지막으로 지난 2월 17일 <한국을 빛낸 사람들 대상>에 선정되어 백범김구기념관 컨벤션홀에서 수상하기도 한 장 대표는, 진취적인 경영으로 한자문화 저변 확대에 꾸준히 기여하겠다는 소감을 남겼다.

The government’s Chinese character education policy for elementary schools is expected to be introduced in 2019. And this is attracting a great attention from the people who wish to learn or deepen their knowledge in Chinese characters. CEO Jang Hwa-soon established Balgeunhanja in December 2015 and also has run Gyeonggihanja for 4 years. She has pioneered her own way to effectively teaching Chinese characters to Korean people with her innovative teaching methods. In recognition of her contribution to the field, she has been appointed as the director of general headquarters and external affairs of the Korea Research Institute for Chinese Characters and Classics. Established in 2001, the institute is affiliated to the Ministry of Education and runs and manages the first to third grade exams for national Chinese character certificates. Its excellent scholarship system is well known and the institute signed a MoU with the administration department of Korea University in an effort to help students obtain the second grade certificate before graduation. Jang served in the institute as a regional head and has recently been promoted to the director of the general headquarters and external affairs. Her goal as the director is to make the institute as the representative body for running and issuing Chinese character certificates. Jang’s capability is well proved as she increased the number of members of Balgeunhanja to 3,800 as of this year from around 2,000 last year and she is targeting to make the number to reach 10,000 by the end of the year. Jang points out that the children with Chinese character competency are better off in reading and literacy than those who have not. This is very important as many of Korean words are made of or from Chinese characters. The institute provides effective courses that cover from characters to idioms, poetry and synonym and antonym so that students can obtain a certificate according to each of their level up to instructor. Jang in addition is applying her ‘associative learning’ method to it to maximize its educational effect. 

Balgeunhanja launches season 2 video and commercials in March
Jang is widely recognized as an educational specialist who teaches Chinese characters in an easy, effective and practical way. She pioneered the way that students learn Chinese characters more at less time, the method which has played a great part in spreading Chinese characters to many people over just students. Her famous methods include ‘associative learning’ in a type of storytelling and combination of her curriculum with Korea’s national martial art Taekwondo. These methods are being demonstrated at her regular slot titled 'Chinese Characters in Associative Learning’, in TV Choson’s <Morning in Gwanghwamun>. While Balgeunhanja has recently been relocated to Cheonho-dong, Gangdong District, Seoul as a new base to achieve 10,000 members within the year, Gyeonggihanja (privately run) is helping normal people easily obtain related certificates. Jang formerly released the season 1 video materials in an app consisting 6 series of each lasting 50 minutes which received a great respond and is preparing to release season 2 in March this year. Also, she is planning to include the series in tablet PCs by targeting the students wishing to study in China and to make new video materials by inviting the children who obtained a certificate with help of the season 2 while more than 80 times of commercials are to be broadcast on TVN during March. Jang is ambitious to list Balgeunhanja in stock market by 2018 to make a spring board for the company to go global. Meanwhile, Jang uses her spare time to make good names for children at free of charge while studying for patent attorney qualification after already obtaining a first grade tax accountant license and a nail art certificate. On February 17, Jang was chosen for <2017 Excellent Koreans Award> and she said that she would keep exerting her effort in spreading effective Chinese character teaching to more people.
