일상을 기적으로, 오병이어의 축복을 기록한 군집과 반복의 패턴들

전통의 미와 현대적 다양성을 동시에 존중하는 국내 유일의 한국 채색화 작가모임 춘추회 소속인 화가 김성실 작가는 한국화와 서양화 사이에 걸쳐진 재료와 소재의 정신적 함의를 펼쳐 온 작가다. 키에슬로브스키 감독의 영화처럼 색채로 여성의 아이덴티티를 상징하는 테마는 고통과 아름다움이 중첩되어 탄생하는 성과의 가치와 아픔을 잘 나타낸다. 다음에 소개할 내용은 정적인 화려함, 한정된 공간에서의 무한한 잠재력을 표현하기까지, 오랜 기도와 경험으로 얻은 마음의 성장으로 말미암아 자신의 색을 찾기까지의 과정을 시리즈로 보여 준 김 작가의 희고, 푸르고, 화려한 ‘세 가지 색, 새 가지 톤’에 대한 고백이다.  

억제와 굴레를 벗어나 작은 패턴 속 퍼레이드의 주인공이 되다
한때 한국미술은 문학과 마찬가지로 현실도피를 허락받은 속성과 특권에 자만하지 않도록 작가들 내면을 억압하며 민중예술에 천착하도록 암묵적으로 동의한 경향이 있었다. 고전주의자들이 선대부터 정해진 엄중한 규칙을 벗어날 수 없는 것처럼, 천부적 재능마저 암막에 가리고 무채색에 투신하는 반면 오랜 세월 가려진 본래의 색채를 자아의 허락을 받아 펼쳐 보이는 예술가도 있다. 화가 김성실 작가는 바로 후자의 경향에 속한다.

그림을 그리기 시작한 후 김 작가는 반복적인 일상을 작은 패턴의 군집으로 표현하는 과정을 톤 업하여 무채색으로, 때로는 푸른 톤으로, 마침내 간절히 원했던 그윽하고 화려한 톤까지 갖게 되었다. 본래 전통 동양화를 전공하고 재질 조합의 정성스러움을 학습한 김 작가에게 환한 전통채색과 기법은 매혹으로 다가왔다. 싱그럽고 열정적인 시기였던 20대 초반, 소박하고도 아름다운 정원, 축복받은 자연의 꽃들을 아껴 화폭에 담았던 김 작가는 시대적 상황 아래 예술을 부르주아적이라 평가하는 시선 앞에서, 마치 암막커튼을 치듯 내면 깊은 곳에 묻어두는 과정을 피하기는 어려웠다고 한다. ‘밑바닥까지 간다는 고행으로 예술을 터득한다’는 유행사조는 예술가에게 스스로를 괴롭히는 채찍과도 같았고, 덕소의 작은 화실에서 해질녘과 어둠으로 스스로를 다독이려는 고난 끝에 김 작가는 마음의 통증이 몸으로 나타나, 큰 병으로 수술을 거듭하고 종교를 가지며 아픔을 극복하는 과정을 거쳤다. 삶에서의 체험과 기도를 통한 극복과정은 현대적인 오브제를 활용한 <스위트 퍼레이드>시리즈로 결실을 맺었으며, 물고기들이 모여 마치 그물망을 이룬 듯, 일상의 경이로움과 오병이어의 교훈을 규칙적인 템포로 담아 깊은 인상을 주었다. 지난해 금박과 합성수지의 눈물방울로 표현해 화려함 속에 담긴 아픔을 상징적으로 보여준 <히스토리 오브 티어>는 춘추미술상이라는 성과를 안겨준 작품이다. 이는 슬픔조차 화려해 보이는 역설, 삶을 인내로 완성하는 가치와 거기에 숨겨진 눈물의 결실에 대해 진지한 결론을 남긴다. 

세 가지 컬러톤이 지배하는 감성의 만남, 그물 속 질서정연한 내면을 끌어모으다
김 작가의 평면형태에서 펼쳐진 감성은 이렇듯 다양한 흰빛, 깊이와 음영을 제각각 지닌 푸른빛을 거쳐 세 번째 톤이자 가장 화려한 <프로미스>에 도달했다. 일과 그림을 병행하는 김 작가는 감성 충전과 명상을 기도로 대신하며, 무채색 톤에서 펼쳐 온 꿈을 자신에 대한 확신 아래 약속이라는 이름으로 화려하게 부활시킨 것이다. 물고기를 종·횡단으로 이어 그물처럼 만들고 인간관계의 연속성, 연관성을 표현한 김 작가는 백자같은 흰 색과 단색, 벽지처럼 가까이 보아야 의미를 알 수 있던 것을 스퀘어 타일처럼 직설적으로 표현하게 됐다. 자신의 감성으로 내면을 설득해 내고, 외적으로도 공감할 수 있음을 보여준 <프로미스> 시리즈에서는 항암치료 이후 시작한 세계여행의 깊은 인상도 담겨 있다. 흰빛 소망의 반복이 찬란한 색조를 갖게 된 과정에서는, 햇빛 찬란한 스페인 여행과 2012년도 터키 이스탄불 아트페어에서 눈에 담아온 지역 고유의 색감에서 받은 감동이 여실히 드러난다. 관념과 싸우고 굴레를 벗어난 내면의식은 여전히 질서정연하게 배열되었지만, 베일을 벗고 보편성이라는 인식에서 한결 자유로워져 있다. 하나님 앞에서 자문하며 솔직해졌고, 형식과 테크닉에 얽매이지 않으며 용기를 낼 수 있었다는 김 작가는 종이를 두드려 가죽의 질감을 재현하던 줌치 공예기법, 종이그릇을 오래 유지하는 유성 보존기법인 콩땜 등을 착실히 숙련해온 세대이기도 하다. 그런 인고 속의 정연한 반복이 결실을 맺어, 채색화 그룹과 돈독한 교류로 세상에 꾸준히 노크하고 있는 김 작가는, 언어가 다른 중년의 외국 여성들도 자신의 그림 정서에 공감하고 대화를 청해왔던 해외 아트페어에서의 행복한 기억을 갖고 있다. 48세로 청년작가상을 받을 만큼 깊은 인상을 남긴 김 작가의 자유로운 내면의 행보가 시각적으로 얼마나 감동을 주는지, 이번 3월 3일부터 11일간 개최되는 AB갤러리에서의 2인 전에서 충분히 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

Being the star in a little patterned parade out of suppress and bonds
The Korean art work once suppressed artists to stick to democratic art by prohibiting their freewill and escapism. While traditionalists were bound to set rules by making a concession to their natural endowments, some artists allowed themselves to expose their true colors. Artist Kim Sung-sil belongs to the latter case. Kim uses his daily observation to express it as a group of little patterns starting from achromatic color to blue tones and eventually to profound and splendid tones. He majored in oriental painting and studied on gatherings of materials before being attracted to traditional bright colors and methods. In his 20s, he shifted the beauty of flowers and gardens onto canvas and went through the period where art was seen as preserve of bourgeois. His passion in creating art works required a considerable amount of effort both mentally and physically and Kim once had to go through a number of surgeries due to his illness but overcame the pain with religious belief and prayers. This process of fighting and recovery was resulted in his series work <Sweet Parade> where he poured wonders of daily life and the lesson of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes in the Bible in the form of regular tempo. Kim symbolically showed the pain behind splendidness with teardrops made of gilt and synthetic resins in his work <History of Tear> and it brought him Chunchu Art Prize. It seems that Kim’s paradoxical depiction of sadness in splendidness, values of completing life in patience, and drawing the result in tears are his unique style. 

Emotional encountering in three colors gathers inner side in orderly manner
Kim’s most splendid colors are well presented in his work <Promise>. Kim realized his daily routine of work, creation and praying into the work. He used fish both longitudinally and horizontally to be seen like a net symbolizing the continuity and relationship between people. He used white and monotone for direct expression like a square tiles for viewers to see their meaning by a close watching. He also poured in <Promise> the impression he felt during traveling around the world after his anti-cancer treatment. The colors expressed in the work was the result of his inspiration from splendid and local colors in Spain and an art fair held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012. Through this process, Kim became freer from universality in style and thought. He became frank in front of the God, freed himself from forms and techniques and gained encouragement. Kim also is an expert of Jumchi Method (traditional Korean paper craft) and Kongttam (oil preserving method for paper bowls). Kim remembers a foreign woman who showed a great interest in his work at an overseas art fair and it is a happy memory of him. Kim received a young artist prize at the age of 48, has been exchanging art with colored picture groups, and is now preparing for a two people exhibition at AB Gallery lasting for 11 days from 3 March this year. <Power Korea> wishes Kim a successful exhibition.
