흐르는 세월 속에 ‘꿈’ 을 새겨 넣는 조각가”
40년간 교편 잡으며 작품 혼 불사르는 ‘김기천 작가’  
르네상스 회화, 조각, 건축에서 뛰어난 업적을 남겼던 ‘미켈란젤로’는 생전에 가장 듣기 좋아했던 말이 무엇보다 자신에게 ‘조각가’로 불러주는 것이었다. 그만큼 ‘조각가’는 단순한 예술가가 아닌 상당히 높은 예술적 가치를 인정받는 예술가이다. 조각은 다른 장르에 비해 돌, 흙, 나무, 쇠붙이 등 쓰임의 재료도 다양해 작가들이 많은 매력을 느끼기도 한다. 그중에서 대리석과 도조 등은 현대에도 많이 선호하며, 어려운 작업 환경에도 불구하고 작가들 마다 나름의 깊이 있는 작품을 시도하는 데 끝없는 노력을 기울이고 있다. <편집자 주> 

변함없는 세월 속에 ’꿈’ 을 주제로 작품들.
생명의 신비를 모티브로 한 작품으로 화제.
엄마가 자궁 속에 잉태된 아기를 보며 사랑스런 표정을 짓는 단순한 형태의 돌조각이 있다. 하얀 대리석으로 다듬어져 어른이라면 한 팔로도 안을 만한 크기다. 제목을 굳이 알지 않아도 생명의 신비를 쉽게 가늠케 하는 작품이었다. 세상에 존재하는 모든 생명체는 꽃을 피고, 열매 맺기를 원하다는 의미를 갖는 것도 있다. ‘지음’ 이란 작품은 ‘뜻을 같이 하는 사람’ 이라고 했다. 나무와 달에 비유한 ‘여인’ 의 얼굴도 있고, 비석과 같이 오랜 기다림을 형상화 한 작품 등에 이르기까지 나름의 메시지를 담은 돌조각 작품들이 사믓 인상 깊게 다가온다. 

이 모든 것은 ‘송전(松田) 김기천’ 작가가 ’꿈’을 주제로 해 완성시킨 작품들이다, 작가의 호인 ‘송전(松田)’은 소나무 밭을 뜻한다. 그에게 꿈은 평소의 생활을 비롯해 작품 등에 이르는 모든 것을 함축한 것이다. 송전은 “이제껏 살아오면서 늘 푸른 꿈을 간직하고 푸른 꿈을 찾아가는 소나무 같이 변함없는 삶을 사는 것이었다.” 면서 “작품은 우리 모두가 원하는 ‘꿈’을 나타내는 주변의 친근한 소재로 작업을 했다”고 밝혔다. 꿈에 대한 작품 표현의 기본 조형은 사람의 얼굴을 거의 생략하고 단순화 시켰다. 상징적으로 눈과 코를 나타냈고, 꿈을 가장 단순하고 솔직하며 담백하게 함축적으로 표현하기 위해 눈에 중점을 두고 작업을 했다. ‘기다림의 꿈’은 비석과 같은 긴 직육면체 대리석에 긴 세월의 기다림을 비바람 지나간 천년의 흔적으로 표현해 우직하게 꿈을 기다리는 모습을 나타냈다. ‘행복한 꿈’ 은 단순한 하트 형태에서 행복하게 웃는 눈을 상징적으로 조형해 꿈을 표현한 것이다. 송전은 어린 시절 보았던 것과 지금 주변의 친근한 소재를 가지고 누구나 꿈을 갖길 원하는 메시지를 담아내고 있다. 그는 “모든 것들이 내 꿈의 대상이다. 나무 한 그루, 새싹 하나, 꽃봉오리 하나, 멀리보이는 십자가, 산, 달, 우리가족, 친구 등 자연과 인간 그리고 사물들 모두가 조화를 이루는 것이 나의 꿈 작업이다.” 고 설명했다. 

2011년 개인전 때 관객들이 자리 떠나질 않아 
대리석에 이어 도조에 몰두 ‘산’ 주제로 작업해.
송전은 대학 3학년 때부터 조각에 손을 대 오랜 세월 작가로서 길을 걸어오고 있다. 그는 대리석 작품으로 2004년과 2011년 두 차례 개인전을 치렀다. 여느 작가에 비해 그리 많지 않은 횟수지만 반응은 의외로 뜨거웠다. 서울 인사동 인사아트에서 일주일간 ‘송전의 꿈’ 을 주제로 한 두 번째 개인전에서는 작품에 빠진 대부분의 관객들이 한동안 그 자리를 떠나지 못했다. 꿈을 표현하는 조각 방식과 얼굴에 부각된 ‘눈’ 표정에 공감이 일치되었기 때문이다. 송전은 모든 것이 얼굴에 있고 눈은 마음의 창으로 얼굴 중에서도 눈에는 꿈이 가득 들어 있다고 한다. 그는 “작품 감상에 너무 몰입해 있는 사람들을 보고 나 자신이 너무 행복 했다. 나도 다른 사람들을 감동시킬 수가 있구나 하는 생각을 가져보게 되었다”고 당시의 분위기를 전했다. 물론 그동안의 돌 작업은 쉬운 것은 아니었다. 돌은 운반부터 부수적인 일까지 많은 노동력을 요하기에 갈수록 벅차기까지 한 일이다. 그래서 그는 4년 전부터 도조(陶彫:도자조형) 작품에 몰두해 가고 있다. 송전은 처음엔 테라코타부터 시작했다. 점토를 빚거나 조각해 구워내는 일을 자유자재로 하며 돌처럼 형태가 단순한 질감의 느낌을 더 살릴 수 있겠다는 생각에서 뛰어든 것이다. 송전은 “점토는 불속에 들어갔을 때 신비한 느낌을 얼마든지 낼 수 있어 신(神)만이 할 수 있지만 나도 그런 표현을 할 수 있겠다는 느낌을 가졌다”며 매력과 장점을 꼽았다. 현재하는 작업은 ‘산’(山)의 형상에 얼굴의 이미지를 넣는 일이다. 산과 같은 인간을 표현해 보자는 시도이다. 치열하게 다투며 살아가는 현대인의 삶을 초월하는 인자무적(仁者無敵), 그것을 잘 나타내는 것이 ‘산’ 이라는 이유에서다. 송전의 재밌는 말을 빌리면 한마디로 “멍 때리는 느낌” 을 표현하는 것. 이를 위해 최소한 간단한 조형으로 반은 외적, 반은 내적인 이미지를 각인해 긴 세월의 느낌을 나타내려 하고 있다. 하지만 너무나 빠르고 복잡한 현대인을 떠나 여유로운 무념무상(無念無想) 표현을 하기란 생각보다 어렵다고 토로한다. 단순하게 돌이 힘이 부쳐 흙 재질로 바꾼다고는 하나 창작의 연장선에서 매번 느낌을 살리는 시도는 그 어느 것도 쉽지는 않아 보인다. 쉽기도 하지만 어려운 게 도조란 얘기이다.

40여년 학교생활 틈틈히 작가의 열정 불사르며
아이들의 ‘롤 모델’ 되어 꿈을 심어주는 데 노력. 
작품은 내 스스로 행복하게 즐기는 삶의 행위이자 작가와 많이 닮는다고 한다. 이런 창작의 결과물을 통해 관객과 소통은 매우 중요하다. 관객이 작가의 창작 의도를 어느 정도 느꼈다면 그건 아마 많이 이해하게 되는 것이고 그만큼 서로가 가까워 졌다는 증거일 것이다. 작가들은 여러 가지 이유에서 창작 과정에서 어려움이 뒤따른다. 그럼에도 불구하고 송전에게 끊임없이 창작 욕구가 솟는 것은 어디서 나올까. 송전은 충북대학교 미술교육과를 나와 교단에 선지 올해로 40년째에 이른다. 그는 내년이면 정년에 해당한다. 송전은 “힘들고 어려운 예술가들에 비해 학교생활을 하며 안정된 마음으로 작품을 할 수 있다는 것에 무엇보다 행복하다” 고 말한다. 그의 작품인 ‘모정(母情)’ 은 중학생 미술교과서에 들어간 작품이기도 하다. 송전은 교편을 잡으면서 작가의 꿈을 놓지 않고 살아 왔다. 자신부터 꿈을 놓지 않으며 아이들도 꿈을 갖도록 했다. 그것은 아이들에게 직접 성공 모델이 되어 주는 일이었다. 그에 따르면 아이들에게 꿈을 심어주기 위해 내 자신이 성공한 것을 눈으로 확인시켜주는 것만큼 좋은 교육은 없더라는 것이다. 그는 작가노트에 이렇게 피력하고 있다. “세상은 꿈꾸는 자의 것이라고 누군가 말했듯 우리는 꿈을 갖고 산다. 아름다운 꿈을 찾아 함께 살아가고자 하는 것이 우리 모두의 행복한 꿈이 아니겠는가?” 대리석과 점토를 만지며 한없이 쓰라리고 거칠어졌을 그의 두 손을 보면서 정말 아름다운 손을 가졌다는 생각을 가져보게 된다.

“The sculptor who carves ‘dream’ into stream of time”
Kim has been a teacher for 40 years while pouring passion into his work
Sculptor Michelangelo preferred to be called as a sculptor. Sculptors are not just simple artists but the artists of high artistic value. Sculptors love to use stone, soil, tree and steel to make a charming work. Marble and sharecrop are especially popular for many sculptors and they try to work hard to give a perfection to each of their work.

The works themed on ‘dream’ in constant flow of time
Taking the center stage with mystery of life as motive
There is a stone sculpture of a mother smiling on her baby in her womb. It is small and made of white marble and an adult can embrace it with his one hand. We do not need to know its name as it gives us an impression about the mystery of life. There is a work delivering the meaning that all living things in the world want to bloom and bear fruits. The work ‘Jium’ means ‘like-minded people’. There is a face of ‘woman’ that resembles tree and the moon and another work that shaped like a tombstone to mean a long wait. All of these works are themed on ‘dream’. The nickname ‘Songjeon’ means a pine tree field. ‘Dream’ for Kim is an implication of everything on the way to his work and life. “I’ve a dream of living like a pine tree that leads an evergreen and unaffected life. I gathered materials around me that resembles ‘dream’ for my work” explained Kim. Kim simplifies his work by minimalizing the face. He carved the eyes and the nose symbolically with more focus on the former to emphasize the ‘dream’ simply and implicitly. Kim used a long cuboid marble to express ‘a long wait’ by leaving traces of a thousand years of rain storm for his work ‘Dream of Waiting’. The other work ‘Happy Dream’ expresses ‘dream’ symbolically with a happy smile in the shape of heart. “Everything is the subject of my dream whether it is a tree, a bud, a flower, a cross, a mountain, the moon, my family, my friend, nature, human and things. And it is my dream work to make them all in harmony” said Kim.

Kim started sculpture from his third year of university. He held solo exhibition in 2004 and 2011 with works made of marble. Though it was only two, the response from the viewers was explosive. The second solo exhibition, held at Insa Art Center, was themed as ‘Dream of Songjeon’ and the viewers could not leave the exhibition because they were impressed by the way Kim carved the ‘eyes’ on the face of the sculpture. Kim said that everything was in the face and the eyes were the window of heart. “I felt really happy by watching the viewers indulged into my work and I thought that I also would be someone who could touch people” said Kim in retrospect. It really is a hard work to make a sculpture with stone as it is heavy. So Kim moved onto sharecrop 4 years ago with terra-cotta to start with. He thought that he could liven up more of the simple texture of stone by using clay. “Clay emits a mysterious feeling when in fire as if it is a work of God but then I thought I could also express the feeling” said Kim. The currently work of Kim is to put images of face into the shape of mountain in an effort to make a mountain-like human because Kim thinks that mountain represents benevolence. Kim said this as ‘poker-face’. Kim is trying to give inner side to the half of the sculpture and extrinsic meaning to the other half but said that it was not easy to execute his intention of the conception ‘freedom from all ideas and thoughts’ into the work. “Sharecrop, therefore, is easy yet difficult” said Kim.

Kim tries to be a role model for children to have a dream
Making a work is an act of enjoying a happy life and it resembles the maker, according to Kim. It is very important for an artist to communicate with people with his/her work. If a viewer feels the intention of the artist, it means that the viewer became closer to the artist. Artists have an endless passion in creating something and in this respect Kim is no different. Kim majored in fine arts education at Chungbuk National University and has taught students at school for 40 years. “I feel really happy that I could have led my artist career while I earn a living as a teacher” said Kim. It is notable that his work ‘Maternal Love’ is in a middle school art textbook. Kim has never given up his dream of being an artist during his 40 years teaching career. Likewise, Kim encourages his students to never give up their dream. He wrote in his diary “Someone said that the world is for those who dream. Likewise, we live in dream. Isn’t it our happy dream to live in search of a beautiful dream?” <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
