10 times more production efficiency for small and medium hospitals 
Cyclotron currently is being operated for radioactive isotope production for medical institutions nationwide. There are 39 of it including 8 domestic cyclotrons developed by Korea Institute of Radiological & Medial Sciences. The expensive imported cyclotrons require a 99 square meter to 132 square meter space to install and they weight 18 to 20 tons which make it not easy to install and operate. An operator produces large quantity of radioactive isotope in early morning for the use but supplying it to other hospitals is difficult in the afternoon due to its decreased quality caused by half-life as time goes by. While there is an increasing number of cancer patients and PET, the supply of radioactive isotope is far from enough. The good news is that a professor Chae Jong-Seo developed the world’s first subminiature and ultra power saving 9MeV-level cyclotron in 2014 and opened a new era for the use of radioactive isotope. The cyclotron ‘SKKUCY-9’, developed by Chae and his team, is 1.5 times smaller in size and 6 tons less in weight compared to the imported ones which made it easy to install and operate. It has 20% better energy efficiency and the price is 70% of those existing products. The team also loaded IT in SKKUCY-9 and makes it possible to operate and produce without directly operating the machine. Also, production efficiency is 10 times improved and can be installed in small and medium sized hospitals and secured competitiveness in overseas market. Chae said “SKKUCY-9 reduced the size and increased efficiency with precision processing technology that reduced gap between magnets. It will contribute to spreading of small sized PET clinics and helping activation of carbon-11 which has short half-life.” 

Growing to be the world’s best particle accelerator research center
The technology of SKKUCY-9 has been transferred to Quantum Bio Science and is preparing to attack the USD 1.8 trillion worth market in the world. The center also developed Dual-head Gantry Radiation Treatment System and working on development of X-band level electron accelerator for radiation treatment and actively carrying out exchanges with world research institutes in the fields of CERN, PSI, KEK, J-PARC, ANL, INFN and BNL. As a result, the center so far has done 2 technology transfers, published more than 37 SCI/SCIE dissertations for the last 5 years and obtained more than 26 patents. Chae said “Due to its capital and technology-intensive elements, the accelerator research has to be carried out by taking an order from the National Research Federation of Korea or the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. So we focused our research on miniaturization, power saving, practicality and commercialization for easy use of companies. We are also exerting our effort in advancement of radiotherapeutics, bringing up solutions and fostering industry specialists.
