The watercolors that ripple a touch in our heart
Artist Go Sook-Jin

The watercolors that ripple a touch in our heart

The bent and spread fingers on 4 strings seem to make sounds like a musical instrument and the tilt bow delivers resonance sometimes strong another time tender. Each instrument of an orchestra makes its unique sound but creates a one harmony and it ripples a touch in our heart. It is ‘Touch’ (2003), a watercolor of artist Go Sook-Jin. Go studied watercolor in the Netherlands and has devoted herself to watercolors for many years since she came back to Korea. Go loved to imagine something since she was very young. She grew up in a rural area surrounded by nature and it is only natural for her to shift those beautiful landscapes onto canvas. She majored in western painting at university and went to the Netherlands to deepen her art world at Hierbij Verkla Art ‘De Muzerie’ (an art college) in Zwolle during which she was charmed by the beauty of lakes and fields expressed on watercolors in the region. Go remembers “I traveled every now and then while studying in the Netherlands. I felt my heart swell whenever I saw green grass, windmills, lakes and the sky. The charm of watercolor, I think, is at its transparency and spread and it suits very well to shift the beauty of nature and its purity.”

“I love to create watercolors that leave a lasting touch”
Being an artist was the best choice Go made in her life. She feels herself only when she draws. She says “How time flies. Every moment of our emotion also fades or is forgotten. But a picture can hold the moment’s emotion and it touches hearts of viewers.” ‘Touch’ is a good example. Go was touched by an orchestra she was invited and was overwhelmed by its grand and warm and thrilling sound. Go shifted her feeling onto a canvas with the title ‘Touch’ and it was selected in 2003 for Danwon Art Festival, the second famous art festival in Korea. In the same year, the work was selected for Gyeonggi Art Contest Exhibition and Rha Hye-Suk Grand Art Exhibition. After running ‘The Netherlands Landscape Gallery in Hwaseong City between 2009 and 2012, she came down to Jeju Island and is pouring her artistic zeal into creation for it provides beautiful landscape. Go says “I’m really happy to create works in the island. I feel it is like my second home. In near future, I’d like to hold a themed solo exhibition here. ‘Flowering Plant’, a poem of Na Tae-Ju, says “It is beautiful when seeing in detail/It is lovely when seeing for a long time.” I’d like to create works like that.” <Power Korea> wishes Go a fruitful 2017 in Jeju Island where indigo sea, wide sky, yellow sea of rape flowers and low stone walls are everywhere to appreciate.
