[Art] 신년특집 - 화제의 작가 ‘문현숙 화가’
“따뜻하게 전달되는 그림이고 싶어요!”
개인전과 아트페어 마다 주목 받는 ‘유망작가’
제5회 성남아트페어(SNAF)가 지난 2016년 11월 15~20일 성남아트센터 ‘808갤러리’에서 개최됐다. 그간의 경험을 토대로 성남미술협회는 아트페어 활성화와 예술인 활동을 돕는 차원의 웹 사이트도 구축하는 등 각별한 신경을 썼으며, 지역의 수준 높은 작가들이 참여함으로써 좋은 성과를 거뒀다. 특히 이 전시에는 여러 작가들 중 ‘이메진(Imagin)’ 시리즈 작품을 내놓은 ‘문현숙 작가’ 에게 많은 관심이 쏠렸는데, 관계자는 물론 지역 인사들에게 큰 화제가 되었다. <편집자 주>
국내외 전시 가는 곳마다 화제의 중심에 올라.
상상력으로 이미지를 미니멀과 단순화시켜 표현.
“그리고 또 그립니다. 몇 번이고 망설이며 고민하다 또 그립니다. 내 설레임을 외면한 채 얄궂게 멀어지려 합니다. 그래도 또 그립니다. 그렇게 뜨거운 여름을 보내고 조금 더 성숙한 모습으로 전시장 앞에 서려고 합니다.” 지난해 ‘문현숙 작가’ 는 성남 아트페어전을 앞두고 여름 내내 그림만 그리며 보냈다. 그리고 전시회를 마치자 “파도 같은 기쁨이 몰려 왔다” 고 회고 했다. 문 작가는 “비록 부스전이라 할지라도 개인전을 준비하는 마음으로 매일 최선을 다했다. ‘이메진(Imagin)’ 작품을 선보이는데 의미를 뒀는데 의외로 많은 관람객이 관심 가져주셔서 얼마나 감사했는지 모른다.” 며 당시의 느낌을 전했다.
'이메진(Imagin)'은 문 작가의 세 번째 시리즈 작품들이다. 작품은 여러 개의 블록을 연결하고 쌓아 모양을 만들어 가는 레고 집짓기와 같다. 이는 문 작가가 어린 시절 즐겨하던 놀이였다. 각각의 블록은 다른 블록들에게 영향을 미치며 어떻게 연결하느냐에 따라 색다른 이미지로 만들어져 있다. 보이는 블록과 보이지 않는 블록들이 적절히 어우러져 새로운 형상을 만들어내는 과정은 상상력을 요한다. 이런 상상력이 ‘이메진’ 시리즈 작업에 영감을 주었다는 문 작가는 “그림 속에서 담긴 작은 집은 개개인의 마음을 드러내 혼자보단 어우러짐 속에서 새로운 기쁨을 발견하고자 하는 것을 주요 메시지로 한다.” 고 설명했다.
문 작가는 또 “색, 선, 면의 반복된 터치는 서로의 집을 연결하고 창을 연결하면서 새로운 관계를 만들었다. 이런 관계들을 재구성하여 시각적 이미지를 보여주고자 했다. 색을 칠하고 선을 그리고 위에 또 다른 이미지를 올리는 작업을 여러 번 반복해 이뤄진 층은 수직과 수평의 미묘한 공간을 만든다. 그 위에 감성과 운률을 집어넣는 작업은 신나는 일이었다. 서로 다른 존재가 소통하고 어우러지면서 나의 상상은 현실이 된다” 고 덧붙였다.
마티에르에 추상기법으로 탄생된 ‘독창적 작품’
문 작가의 작품들은 주로 마티에르에 꼴라쥬 기법을 배합해 미니멀과 단순화된 형태를 기하학적으로 표현해낸 것들이다. 마티에르 기법을 사용하다 보니 작품 특성상 한 번에 작업이 완성되기란 쉽지가 않다. 이 때문에 문 작가는 그림과 끊임없이 대화를 하며 그림 색감과 이미지, 형상을 떠올리는 방식을 이어간다. 이렇게 시간을 두고 표현하다 보니 어쩌면 보는 이들에 따라 느낌이 제 각각 다를 수도 있다. 마치 ‘숨은 그림 찾기’ 를 하듯 작품 속에서 관람자는 새로운 것들을 찾아 나간다. 작품을 스스로 해석하고 자신만의 해답을 찾아가는 것 그것이 작가가 의도하는 바이다.
문 작가는 길을 걷다 사물을 보면 이미지를 단순화 시키고 작업하길 좋아한다. 그림이 밤새도록 안 될 때도 많다. 이때는 산책과 독서 등으로 풀어 나간다. 일주일에 한 두 번은 드로잉과 누드 크로키를 하기도 한다. 누드 크로키는 모델의 감정, 선, 동작 등을 3분 안에 담아내야 하기 때문에 순간적인 감각과 선의 강약, 음영 등을 묘사하는 데 좋은 훈련이 된다. 이런 모든 것이 슬럼프를 극복하는 그녀만의 방법이다.
문 작가는 르누아르, 모딜리아니 등의 작품을 좋아했다. 지금 그녀는 ‘바스키아’ (미국의 팝아트 계열의 천재적인 자유구상 화가)처럼 자유로운 작가를 꿈꾼다. ‘바스키아’ 를 떠 올리면서 마음을 다지기도 한다고 했다. 그녀의 작품에 대해 지인들도 “그림이 참 따뜻하다” 고 칭찬과 격려를 아끼지 않는다. 이런 것이 무엇보다 그림에 열정을 쏟게 하는 커다란 힘이다.

“대중에게 따뜻하게 전달되는 그림 그리고 파”
일반적으로 ‘아트페어’ 하면 몇 개 이상의 화랑이 한 장소에 모여 미술작품을 판매하는 행사로, 미술시장을 뜻한다. 화랑 외에 작가 개인이 직접 참여하는 때도 있지만, 미술품 시장의 기능을 활성화하고, 화랑 사이의 정보 교환이나 판매 촉진 또는 시장의 확대를 위해 여러 화랑이 연합해 개최하는 것이 보통이다. 이런 가운데 문 작가는 2014년 첫 개인전으로 ‘링크(Link)’ 시리즈를 선보인 이후 2015년 ‘스노우이 빌리지(Snowy village)’시리즈, 2016년 ‘이메진(Imagin)’시리즈 작품 등을 내놓으면서 매년 미술시장에서 입지와 가치도 더욱 커져가고 있다.
문 작가에게 2015년과 2016년은 의미도 컸던 시기였다. 동대문디자인프라자(DDP)에서 열린 ‘어포터블 아트페어’ 에서는 국내 건축가가, 프랑스 ‘루브르 아트쇼핑(CARROUSEL DU LOUVRE)’ 에서는 외국인이, ‘성남아트페어(SNAF)’ 에서는 국내 컬렉터들이 작품을 사가는 등 국내외로 기반을 닦는 최대 분수령이 되었다. 가는 곳마다 그녀의 부스는 인기도 많아 유망 작가로 불림에 손색이 없다. 2002년부터 작품 활동을 시작해 햇수로도 벌써 15년에 이른다.
한국미술협회 성남지회의 회원 활동도 열성적이다. ‘성남아트페어’에 참여한 계기도 이런 인연에서 비롯되었다. ‘Art &Goods' 전시에서는 작품 외에 ‘이메진’ 작품을 프린트한 스카프도 커다란 인기를 얻었다. 문 작가는 새해를 맞이해 누구에게나 ‘따뜻하게 전해지는 그림’ 을 그려가고 싶은 소망을 내비쳤다. 그녀가 바라는 것은 갈수록 각박해지는 우리의 삶 속에서 친밀한 그림으로 많은 사람이 위안 받았으면 하는 것이며, 더불어서 ‘행복한 꿈’을 꾸는 세상이다.

[Art] New Year’s Special – Sensational artist ‘Moon Hyun-Sook’
“I wish to deliver warmth to people through my painting”

“I draw again and again through repeated thinking and hesitation. But things seem to be far away from my heart throbbing. But I draw again. So I spend the summer, grow up and hold a solo exhibition.” Moon spent the whole summer for drawing in preparation for Seongnam Art Fair last year. She remembered that she felt an utter pleasure like waves surging in after the exhibition. Moon said “It was a booth-based exhibition but I prepared it like my own solo exhibition. I particularly focused on my work ‘Imagine’ and the visitors gave it an unexpected respond and I was really grateful.”
‘Imagine’ is Moon’s third series work. She created the series by linking and piling up several blocks like Lego which was her favorite play in childhood. To make a certain form with various shapes and colors of blocks requires an imagination. Moon said “A small house in my work is not about an individual abode but a message for harmony and sharing and the pleasure as a result of its act.”
Moon continued “The repeated touches for colors, lines and surfaces create a new relation between them and I reorganized them to show visual images. The layers create a subtle space both vertically and horizontally and it really was an exciting job to blow into the work my emotion and rhythm throughout. My imagination becomes real through this communication and harmony between different existences.”
Unique works created through matiére abstract method
Moon creates works by combining matiére collage methods added with minimalism and simple form geometrically. Matiére method in fact makes it difficult to create a work in a short period of time. So Moon has to repeat the process for colors, images and shapes. But thanks to this time lapse, viewers might get different feelings and images from the same painting like a pictorial puzzle. And it is exactly the Moon’s intention for them to find their own answer through each work.
Moon loves turning an object she finds while walking on the street into an image for a work. When things do not go smoothly, she finds inspiration from a stroll or reading a book. But she keeps doing drawings and nude sketch once or twice a day as they can be a good training for expressing her emotion through lines, shades in 3 minutes. It also is a good method for Moon to overcome her slump.
Moon liked Renoir and Modigliani. She now is dreaming of becoming like Basquiat, an American scribble artist, whom she gets an inspiration from. People who know Moon often praise “Moon’s works are really warm” and it plays a big support for her.

Artists sell their art at an ‘art fair’ generally speaking. It is normally held in cooperation with galleries to promote the market and to exchange information. Moon displayed ‘Link’ series at her first solo exhibition in 2014 and it was followed by ‘Snowy village’ series in 2015 and ‘Imagine’ series in 2016 through which she has made her firm status in the art world.
The years 2015 and 2016 were meaningful for Moon. Moon’s works were sold to some architects in Korea at ‘Affordable Art Fair’ held in DDP, to foreigners at ‘CARROUSEL DU LOUVRE’ in France and to art lovers in Korea at Seongnam Art Fair. Her booth created a sensation in all art fairs she has participated and it has been 15 years that she has actively engaged herself in.
Moon also is active as a member of Korean Fine Arts Association Seongnam. Her work ‘Imagine’ in printed scarf attracted a great attention at ‘Art & Goods’ exhibition. Meanwhile, Moon said that she wish to deliver warmth to people through her painting in 2017 so that people find a piece of comfort from her work and together dream of building a happy world.
