“희망을 꽃피우는 자연주의 작가” 
다양한 경험에서 우러난  ‘작품 세계’ 펼쳐

팔공산 낙조에 반해 거기서 그림 그리고 사는 한 여인이 있다. 동공에 살얼음처럼 깔린 미소, 하지만 날이 매섭게 서 있다. 어울림 보다는 고립이 더 어울릴 듯한 기질, 그것도 운명 아닌가. 먼 곳을 바라보기에 알맞게 단련된 눈매, 저 기운은 삶의 정규노선에선 살아남기 힘들 것 같다. 온라인보다는 오프라인 쪽으로 기운 유전자. 하여튼 사람 쪽으로 잘 번지지 않으려는 ‘성정’이 맘에 들고, 비오는 날 먼 그리움을 눈시울 가로 불러내 놀 줄 아는, 여인은 그렇게 자연과 한 몸으로 자유인이었다.<곽계연 작가 첫 전시전에 담긴 글 ‘낙조에 반해 거기서 그림 그리고 사는 여인’ 중에서>

대구에서 활동하는 30년 경력의 중견 작가
편안한 마음을 품게 하는 ‘자연의 풍경’ 그려
 화단 경력 30년째로 '자연의 작가'로 손꼽히는 곽계연 화가는 자연의 풍경을 재해석한 작품 등으로 널리 알려져 있다. 곽 작가는 짙은 회색 빛이 감도는 또는 붉은 빛으로 화면을 가득 채우는 마티에르 기법으로 덧칠해진 다양한 색채들의 어우러짐이 돋보이는 작품들을 선보인다. 이를 통해 우리 미술계에 또 하나의 새로운 표현 기법을 만들어 가고 있다.
 
곽 작가는 작품을 통해 우리를 지켜가는 ‘자연의 위대함’ 을 형상화 하는 것에 중점을 두고 있다. 그녀의 대표작 <봄 열리다>,<우리들 세상>,<해뜨는 집>,<Jazz> 등의 작품은 강렬한 터치감과 색채 대비를 통해 자연의 생명력과 그 안에 품어져 있는 애상을 엿볼 수 있다. 탄탄하게 짜인 화면의 구도를 바라보고 있으면 마음 한구석이 쓸쓸해지기도 하는 한편 보는 이들로 하여금 위대한 사랑과 따뜻한 마음을 품게 만드는 인간미와 그 매력에 끌리게 된다.

곽 작가의 작품 중 해와 달 등은 그 자체로 인간을 굽어 살피는 자연의 힘을 표현한 오브제이며, 강렬한 마티에르와 힘 있게 이어지는 선은 그 자신이 곧 인간에 대한 희망을 놓지 않고 있음을 표현하는 것이다. 이런 굵직한 작품들은 평소에 판화 및 애칭(금속조각에 선을 따라 새기는 판화기법), 목공예, 누드 크로키 등의 연구와 다양한 훈련에서 기인한다.

곽 작가는 “제가 자연의 풍경들을 좋아하기 때문에 자연을 재해석해 표현하기를 즐긴다. 자연은 우리를 보듬은 채로 돕는 우주의 존재와도 같은 것이기 때문에 자연을 경배하고 기리기 위해 나름의 기법으로 연구하며 작품을 만들어 가고 있다. 자연이 즐거움과 기쁨을 안겨주는 것처럼 지금 그림을 할 수 있다는 것에 감사하고, 제 그림을 보고 많은 분들이 기뻐해주셔서 감사하다” 고 밝혔다. 

2006년 첫 전시 이후 수작들 계속해서 발표
구상에서 추상으로 변화하며 창작세계에 몰입
곽 작가는 현재 대구 팔공산 자락의 아파트에서 자신의 작품 활동을 펼치고 있다. 자연이 주는 포근함과 주변의 다양한 소재들 속에서 그림과 대화하며 작품세계를 펼쳐가고 있다. 햇살이 뽀얗게 비치는 아파트의 베란다는 작은 정원을 방불케 한다. 다양한 식물과 작은 나뭇가지들 사이로 빼꼼히 내미는 색색의 꽃들은 그림 소재 뿐 아니라 그녀의 벗들이 되어준다. 곽 작가는 “자연을 사랑하는 마음이 있었기에 지금의 작품들을 만들어낼 수 있었다” 면서 “내 작품을 통해 많은 사람이 따뜻함과 위안 받기를 바라는 마음이다”고 덧붙여 말했다.

사실 화가로 살아가기란 예나 지금이나 녹록치는 않다. 아무리 미술대학을 나오고 그림에 대한 열정을 갖고 있더라도 실제 등단까지 자신의 작품을 모아 번듯한 개인전을 개최하기는 힘든 여정이 기다리고 있다. 곽 작가도 명성을 얻기까지는 여러가지 우여곡절이 있었다. 그녀는 대구 계명대학교에 장학생으로 입학했으나 부모의 권유로 1년 만에 효성여자대학교로 편입해 졸업을 했다. 그리고 가정을 꾸리고 한 사람의 아내로서, 어머니로서 역할을 다하는 것이 최선의 선택으로 여기며 살았다. 

하지만 곽 작가에게 있어 그림은 곧 삶이었다. 결혼 후에도 그림은 계속했고 스스로를 ‘사람 쪽으로 잘 번지지 않으려는 성정’ 이라고 표현할 만큼 그림 안에 침잠한 세월을 보냈다. 그러면서 자신을 되찾아 작가의 꿈을 일궜고 의연하게 일어서는 모습을 보였다. “어릴 때부터 성격이 외향적이지 못해 제 자신을 표현하는 수단으로서 미술에 대한 애정을 갖게 된 것 같다. 당시만 해도 그림 실력으로는 부족함이 많다고 느꼈다. 그럼에도 그 때까지 저의 존재 이유를 찾고 더 이상 미술을 등한시하고 덮어놓지 않기 위해서 첫 개인전이 필요했었다. 첫 전시에서 받은 에너지가 화가로서 활발히 활동해 가는 큰 이유가 되지 않았나 싶다”

'그림이 곧 삶' 인간에 대한 ‘희망’ 표현해
한국미술협회 대구지회 등 회원으로 활동
곽 작가는 2006년 첫 개인전을 대구 ‘대백프라자 갤러리’ 에서 가졌다. 미대 출신 작가로는 늦은 감은 있었지만 회화를 잠시 접었던 기간에도 창작 활동에 도움을 얻는 여러 작업을 계속 해왔기에 성공적으로 마칠 수가 있었다. 미술계를 잠시 떠나 있으면서도 늘 그림에 대한 열망이 누구보다 강했던 탓이다. 준비기간이 5년이 넘는 시간이 걸렸지만 그만큼 작품 세계를 단단히 완성시켜 놓았던 것이다.

당시 첫 개인전의 48점 작품은 구상화 계열로 풍경화와 정물화, 인물화 등 소재와 주제는 다분히 보편적이지만 그 안에서 엿보이는 힘과 에너지는 미래를 여는 분수령이 되기에 부족함이 없었다. 곽 작가는 이후 부산과 대구 KBS 방송총국 전시를 비롯해 2012년 경찰청 전시, 2016년 서울 한가람미술관 전시 등 9회 개인전과 다수의 초대전 및 단체전으로 자신의 세계를 완성해 나갔다. 곽 작가는 동양화와 수채화를 비롯해 도자기, 판화, 조각 등 미술의 여러 분야에 대한 지식을 섭렵하고 지금도 새로운 시도를 조금씩 그러면서 쉼 없이 이어가고 있다. 회화의 세계를 완성해가는 것 뿐 아니라 다양하게 접목해 발전시켜 보려는 꿈을 갖고 있다.

곽 작가는 현재 한국미술협회 대구지회 회원이자 전업작가회 회원, 동구미술협회 회원, 코너세븐 회원으로서 국내 미술계 발전을 위한 행보도 매진 중이다. 현대미술이 구상에서 비구상으로 또는 추상으로 변화해 가는 변화무쌍한 작품 세계처럼, 그녀 또한 다양한 세계를 보는 스펙트럼의 변화를 맞이 해간다는 생각을 갖는다. 이를 통해 작품으로 인간애를 실천해 나가며 많은 이들에게 ‘희망’ 을 주는 작가로 남고 싶다는 바람도 내비쳤다. 끝없는 작품 열정 속에 꽃 피워낸 작가 곽계연. 이런 노력을 기울이는 그녀가 존재하기에 한국 미술계의 미래가 더욱 밝아지지 않나 싶다.

 “Naturalist artist who makes hope in bloom”
Kwak creates works from experience 
There is a woman living in the charm of the sunset in Palgong Mountain and drawing paintings. A smile is laid like thin ice on the pupils of the eye but its blade is sharp. Isolation might suit her trait better than mingling but then it is her fate. Her eyes were trained to gaze far and beyond and the energy seems to make her harder to survive in the lives of commoners. Her gene prefers offline to online. Her nature of isolation, however, is more agreeable and she knows how to call distant memories to her tear-brimmed eyes to play with, and she, there, alone always stands free from the world but nature, the source of living. <excerpt from Kwak’s note ‘The woman living in the charm of the sunset and drawing paintings’ in her first solo exhibition>

Walking a single path as an artist for 30 years in Daegu
Landscape paintings for comfort
Kwak is known as a ‘naturalist artist’ for she has interpreted nature in her works for the last 30 years. She uses matière method to fill up the canvas with dark greyish red lights expressed in harmony of a variety of colors through which she strives to create new expressive methods.

Kwak focuses on personification of ‘nature’s power’. <Spring, Bursting>, <Our World>, <Sunrise House> and <Jazz> are good examples to appreciate strong touch of brush, color contrasts and the vitality yet sadness of nature. One might not help feeling a great love and warm heart and a sense of sorrow from her works. 

The sun and the moon in particular are the two main subjects for Kwak to draw out nature’s beauty from. The intense matière and the strong lines in a row indicate that she still grabs the thread of hope for humanity. It is the result of her years long training in engraving, etching, woodcraft and nude sketch. 

Kwak says “I love landscape and its reinterpretation. Nature is like an existence of the universe that embraces and helps us and I’d like to pay my respect to it through my works. Like nature gives us pleasure and joy, I’m thankful that I can draw paintings now and that people partake of my joy.”

Continuous work flow since 2006
From figurative art to abstract
Kwak lives and works in her apartment at the foot of Palgong Mountain in Daegu. The sun shines on the veranda and turns it into a small lively garden. Various kinds of plants and tiny flowers then come to her for a chat or sometimes go into her canvas. She says “These are my source of creation and I wish people feel comforted through my works.”

There never has been an easy time for humanity living as an artist. Prestigious art school or perpetual enthusiasm have often been blown out in front of harsh reality which even is reluctant to give an artist a chance to have a solo exhibition, not to mention to make a success in the field. Kwak also went through trials and errors. She entered Keimyung University on scholarship but reentered Hyosung Women’s University on recommendation of her mother after 1 year. She then raised a family and it was her best choice.  

Nevertheless, painting has always been the life itself for her and she continued her artistic creation time to time during the housekeeping. She says that she is a woman of isolation and this rather has played advantageous for her to push forward her passion. “I was born introverted and I took a brush to express myself instead. I didn’t feel I was particularly good at painting at that time but I needed it to find myself. Holding the first solo exhibition was an extension of this try and it actually drove me further and deeper as an artist.”

Kwak held her first solo exhibition at Debec Plaza Gallery in 2006. Although it was rather late an exhibition as an art college graduate but it was a successful first start: a 5 year preparation gave deeper insight in each work displayed. 

The total 48 works might have been seen as common in terms of their forms such as landscape, still life and portrait but their materials and subjects were good enough to give powerful energy and a possibility for new styles and methods. Kwak then succeeded the exhibition to KBS Busan and Daegu, Korean National Police Agency in 2012 and Hangaram Art Museum in 2016, totaling 9 solo exhibitions and numerous group and invitational exhibitions during which she also expanded her knowledge in oriental painting, watercolor, ceramics, printing and sculpting. She said that she dreams of completing her world of painting and its application to various genres and fields.

Currently, Kwak is a member of Korea Fine Arts Association Daegu, Korea Full Time Artists Association, Dong District Arts Association and Corner Seven through which she shares and experiments new ideas and styles.
