Who will be the next president of Korea?
Moon Jae-in, Ban Ki-moon, Park Won-soon,
Ahn Cheol-soo, Lee Jae-myung, Sohn Hak-kyu, etc?

Park’s duty as the president was suspended on 9 December as the result of the impeachment being passed the National Assembly by 234 in favor, 56 against, 7 invalids and 2 abstentions. While the impeachment bill is being examined at the Constitutional Court of Korea (CCK), Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn is acting for the president. Park Han-chul, the president of the CCK said in his New Year’s speech “We will examine the impeachment bill without fear or favor but based on the transparent legal procedure in speed that will make sense to the people.” Leaving the embarrassing situation aside a while, who will be the next president of Korea is taking the center stage of the buzz. The 19th presidential election is 20 December 2017 but majority of people predict it will take place within the first quarter of the year. Yet the soon-to-be-president is still in obscurity. It might give a hint though if we take a look at the recent poll carried out by Realmeter in early December: Moon Jae-in (23.5%), Ban Ki-moon (18.2%), Lee Jae-myung (16.6%), Ahn Cheol-soo (7.5%), Park Won-soon (4.3%) and Sohn Hak-kyu (4.2%). The latest poll by KBS and Korea Research, however, shows a variance in percentage with new faces: Moon Jae-in (21.6%), Ban Ki-moon (17.2%), Lee Jae-myung (11.4%), Ahn Cheol-soo and Ahn Hee-jung (4.6%), Hwang Kyo-ahn (3.4%) and Park Won-soon (3.1%).

Civil-rights lawyer turned politician Moon Jae-in
Likely-to-be the next president of Korea Moon Jae-in is a civil-rights and labor lawyer turned politician. He stepped into the political circle by taking the post of the senior secretary to the president for civil affairs of the Roh Moo-Hyun Administration in 2003 and the position continued to 2005 with an additional role as the senior secretary to the president for civil society before serving his last post as the last chief presidential secretary of the same administration. When Roh ended his life, he served as the chief director of Roh Moo Hyun Foundation. His second phase of political career started when he won the 19th general election in 2012 with 55% of the vote in his constituency of Sasang District, Busan. In the 18th presidential election the same year, he was defeated by the current frustrated president Park by 3.6%. He nevertheless pushed his political ambition in the New Politics Alliance for Democracy before serving as the first leader of the current The Minjoo Party which he retired from the position to prepare for the next presidential election. Yet the party members regard him as the most influential person of the party. In a relay interview, he showed his aspiration to build new Korea where ‘equality’ in opportunity, ‘fairness’ in procedure and ‘justice’ in result are commonly practiced.

The merit of being the first Korean UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon
Born in Eumseong County in North Chungcheong Province in 1944, Ban Ki-moon is best known as the first Korean UN secretary general. He joined in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1970 and served as the director of international liaison division of the ministry in 1980, the councilor and consul general of Korean Embassy in the US in 1987, the special assistant of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1992, the senior secretary to the president for foreign affairs and national security in 1996, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2000 and 2001, the headquarters ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2002, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade between 2004 and 2006 and the UN secretary general between 2007 and 2016. During his 10 year service in the UN, Ban dealt with average 9.5 schedules a day, visited 154 countries out of the 193 member countries of the UN and met the heads of the international organizations more than 7,000 times from which he received credits for his diligence. As the weak point, he has no experience in domestic politics but being neutral is playing advantageous for him to secure his status as the runner-up presidential candidate at the moment.

Clearing away the outdated politics by the innovator Park Won-soon
The General Election Federation (People’s Coalition for Corrupt Politics Clean Up) launched an anti-campaign against corrupt politicians in the 16th general election in 2000. 102 of 132 candidates (72.3%) had to drink a bitter cup as a result. And the person who commanded the anti-campaign was Park Won-soon. He said that the anti-campaign was carried out based on their search on the candidate’s history of military service and property and corruption charges, violation of election law, breach of constitutional order, anti-human rights activities, diligence on the duty, attitude on bills and polices and anti-parliamentary and anti-voters activities. In 2001, he established The Beautiful Foundation to promote donation culture. In autumn 2011, he challenged the Seoul mayoral election as an independent candidate and received 52.15% to beat the rival by 7.19%. He claimed the city land used for guarding former president Chun Doo-hwan as an immediate action after inauguration and kept his promise to reduce university tuition fee by half at University of Seoul. He poured city’s budget of KRW 83.8 billion, reducing the yearly tuition fee to KRW 2.38 million and 75,000 for the students. In 2014, he was reelected (56.1%) and recently announced his will to challenge the presidential primary of The Minjoo Party. To his weak point of not having once been a lawmaker before, he said “The people are tired and feel despaired of the outdated politics. All those years, I have walked a single path as a civil activist and the innovator mayor of Seoul. If the people are eager for an innovator and innovation in deep down their heart, I am the one who is likely to be elected.”

An entrepreneur turned politician Ahn Cheol-soo
Ahn established Ahnlab in 1995 and has performed remarkable feats in the computer security sector in Korea. He served as a board member of The Beautiful Foundation between 2008 and 2012 and the dean of Seoul National University Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology between 2011 and 2012. He began his political career in 2013 as a 19th member of the National Assembly. He served as the co-leader and a senior advisor of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy in 2014 and the co-leader of The People’s Party in 2016. Currently, he is a 20th member of the National Assembly. He created a sensation in the presidential election in 2012, stirring the political world with ‘An Cheol Soo Syndrome’, and he was praised for his talent in pushing things forward and consistency in speech and action, through which he has secured a strong support from those who are fed up with the established political powers divided into Yeongnam and Honam. In the general election in April 2016, The People’s Party surprised both the political world and the people by winning a considerable number of votes and put the new party on the third in rank after The Minjoo and The Saenuri.

SNS-based communicator and hard-hitting orator Lee Jae-myung
‘Straightforwardness’ might best serve Lee Jae-myung. His outspoken comments have been well received by the public ever since he was a civil activist and his talent in using SNS, an effective communication channel with the people, has earned him fame and recognition. He joined The Uri Party in 2005 but had to drink a bitter cup in the local election in 2006 and the general election in 2008. He served as the deputy spokesperson thereafter and won the Seongnam mayoral election with 51% of the vote in 2010 from which he has been serving the position until now. He wiped off the city’s debt of KRW 570 billion and wowed the citizens with ‘3 Free Welfare Policies’: Young People Support Fund, School Uniform and Postnatal Care. He was the one who first took action against the president Park in Gwanghwamun Plaza when the Park and Choi Gate broke out last November. He led the candle vigil and stood upon impeaching for the president. His speeches immediately created a ripple on SNS and were spread like wildfire especially among young people. And his straightforwardness and action have made him as a promising presidential candidate backed up by an upward trajectory in approval rating. That is why rivals are keeping a tight rein.

A man of dignity and a veteran politician Sohn Hak-kyu
Sohn served as a political science and diplomacy professor at Inha University in 1988 and the director of Sogang University Institute of Social Sciences between 1922 and 1993 before stepping into the political world as a 14th member of the National Assembly (The Democratic Liberal Party) in 1992. In 1996, he served as the Minister of Health and Welfare, a 16th member (The Grand National Party) of the National Assembly in 2000, the 31st governor of Gyeonggi Province in 2002, the co-leader of The United New Democratic Party in 2008, the leader of The Democratic Party in 2010, a senior advisor of The United Democratic Party in 2011 and the co-chairman of Central Election Commission of The New Politics Alliance for Democracy in 2014. He retired from the political world when defeated at a by-election but came back again last September. At a supporting night of the 10th anniversary of East Asia Future Foundation on 13 last month, he said “I will gather innovative warriors who will build the 7th Republic of Korea”. He has not officially made a statement to run for the coming presidential election but political reformation is his top priority.
