Leads the paradigm change of industry-academy cooperation from technology-focused to knowledge-focused

LINC (Leaders in industry-university cooperation) fostering project is a support program made by the Ministry of Education to create and spread a leading model of diverse industry-university cooperation for co-prosperity and development between local university and industry and rear and supply excellent talents needed for the development of local industry. Among them, Daegu University is drawing attention by proposing a new concept of welfare industry-university model under the vision of building <NEO with DUI> (new ecosystem for industry-university cooperation).

Specialized leading model <THE+>constructed welfare-type industry-university cooperation system
Since it was selected for LINC rearing project supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in April 2012, Daegu University, along with all its departments, has done its best to improve the organization, system and culture of the university continuously in order to be reborn friendly to Industry-University cooperation. Especially overcoming the existing model leaning toward science and engineering, the University has sought for broader, welfare industry-university cooperation in the region through convergence between non-science/engineering and manufacturing, knowledge service, welfare organizations, social enterprises, etc. Center head Choi Byung-jaesaid, “We make ‘THE+’ our specialized leading model. We are running a specialized industry-academy cooperation program for the socially alienated such as disabled, aged and women and making efforts to realize ‘smart welfare,’ which combines the areas of special education, rehab science and social welfare with engineering technology, and build welfare industry-university cooperation system through local IT convergence and activity of smart device industry.”

While employing 35 industry-university cooperation-focused professors to improve its constitution,  Daegu University LINC Center is helping students build up as excellent talents suited for specialized industry fields through track/grade system curriculumcomposed of THE+Liberal, THE+Major and In-depth major (3 steps). Besides, in order to strengthen practical exchange with family companies for diverse fields of industry including metal/machinery, electrical/electronic, IT, education service, chemical engineering/environment, HOME, etc. the university is engaging in all-direction, all-set corporate support project by dividing these into 10 sections.  Especially enterprises in the section of HOME (handicapped old multi-culture) composed of social welfare enterprises and institutions related to the weak, such as the disabled, aged and multi-culture family,are allotted over 30% of the corporate support project preferentially and given the benefit of support up to 70% of the college research facilities and equipment usage .

“Will make efforts to spread Humanities/Social sciences industry-academy cooperation model”
The biggest characteristic of Daegu University LINC Center is that all members are participating in the project. For currently ongoing projects, 18,684 students and 613 professors are participating from 12 colleges and over 100 majors, and over 60% of them are non-science and engineering, that is, majors in humanities, social sciences and arts and physical education. Center head Choi stated, “Our Project Center is executing diverse systems to increase participation of non-science and engineering majors in industry-university cooperation. First, we are operating the system of rating achievements of industry-university cooperation in technology transfer, patent registration and company research funds as double the science/engineering for humanities and social sciences. We are positively leading to participation in technologicalcommercialization by pushing up the distribution of marks for non-science and engineering registration of patents. Also, by operating convergence industry-university cooperation course, which is on-the-job training curriculum, in 9 tracks, we are making efforts to rear excellent talents equipped with practicality in diverse specialized areas. “

On last November 8, Daegu University held ‘2016 Humanities and Social Sciences Industry-University Cooperation Forum’ to share the existing model and spread the performances. Center head Choi said, “This forum introducedhumanities and social sciences education model, cases of capstonedesign operationand corporate support program that have been constructed so far. Through it, we were able to verify that a university’s paradigm for industry-university cooperation is expanding from the existing ‘technology’ to ‘knowledge.” He added, “For the upcoming 5th project year, we will complete a large-size university model for industry-academy cooperation in which the entire university members will participate and we are planning to seek for expansion and activity of global industry-university cooperation through international cooperation with universities overseas.”
