[Buddhism] Monk Choyeon of Gooryong Temple
Soothing people’s tired hearts
Choyeon attends a mountain temple concert at Daeseong Temple and an event of the Federation of Korea Traditional Religions

Buddhism is a traditional religion which advocates salvation for all people and leads them to nirvana. The teachings of Buddha have become more needed in the hard time as today and leaders are required to have virtues that can sooth people’s tired hearts. Once decorated the covers of the media in the past, Monk Choyeon of Gooryong Temple has been practicing the Buddha’s teachings of love and benevolence for many years and <Power Korea> met her.

The temple where you can visit for a prayer anytime
Choyeon trained herself and sought her future path in the province before. She recently opened Gooryong Temple near Seokchon Late in Songpa District, Seoul. The temple belongs to the Jogye Order and she, as the chief monk, has met many people who tried to find a peace at her two temples in Nonhyeon-dong and Myeonmok-dong. “I traveled to the country for a while but many people, especially who have known me for more than 10 years, wished to see me again when I came back to Seoul and I felt really happy. The temple is surrounded by Seokchon Late on the left and Baekje Royal Tombs on the right which I have to say that it is nicely located” said Choyeon. People can visit the consulting room and the roof prayer hall of the temple 24/7. This is because Buddhism does not specify the time and date for gathering like churches which is on Sunday. We can often see many people still light a candle to pray late at night in the hall and Choyeon makes herself busy to assist them as she believes that she came to the world to heal people’s tired hearts through which she can also find happiness.

A woman CEO turned monk volunteered well-digging
in Myanmar between 2011 and 2012

Choyeon became familiar with Buddhism since she was a child as her grandfather was a great monk. She once was possessed by spirit at the age of 17 during which she wandered through the world. After graduation, she started a business selling hats and underwear at 27 and became a successful woman CEO in her early 30s and appeared on KBS. In her 50s, she made yet another success by importing pine mushrooms from the North. She married Jo Se-hyung around this time but left home to be a monk (of the Jogye Order) when Jo was sent to prison in Japan. She learned under a Buddhist priest for 3 years and was given a Buddhist name ‘Choyeon’ meaning ‘Beautiful like the first, always walk like the dew’. Between 2011 and 2012, she volunteered well-digging in Myanmar with the Zen Buddhism Korea with good will of helping the underprivileged people of the country during which she visited Kaba Aye Pagoda where sacred relics of Buddha is located. “We dug about 50 wells but we needed more manpower. We volunteered for the digging with good will of helping countries in need like Korea was helped by the US after the Korean War” explained Choyeon.

Singer Park Nam-il resonated with autumn leaves around Daeseong Temple
An autumn concert for Buddhists was held on 6 November at Daeseong Temple (founder monk Hoeju) located in 220 Jeryeong-ri, Buk-myeon, Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. Singer Park Nam-il sang his hit songs such as Love of Reed, Don’t Cry Hongdo, and Affection for 2 hours. “The foundation of Korea first started from gods. Our ancestors scattered bits of food around before eating their meal, wishing a rich year. In other words, they showed their greetings to gods. In the same respect, I hoped the mountain concert could heal tired souls of those with faith” said Choyeon. Meanwhile, she attended the Grand Korean Cultural Festival held at the outdoor theater of Naminsa, Insa-dong, by the Federation of Korea Traditional Religions (president Yun Ki-soon) on 13 November. The event was meant to gather strength of 500,000 shamans and Choyeon said in her speech that shamans needed to be reborn to get along with the real world through training and enlightenment.

Choyeon’s foresight helps people
Choyeon plays the lighthouse to illuminate the world with hope

Choyeon gives effective solutions to marital conflict and those who seek advice on business and investment at Gooryong Temple. Some people who came for business consulting found a disease in their body thanks to Choyeon’s insight. One of them doubted at first but it turned out that she had a cervical cancer and she did a 100 day candle prayer after which her business went very well. One day, a mother, who had a son with medical conditions, came but Choyeon immediately noticed and gave a solution. From a child to reaching 25 years old, the son twisted his body and said “Mom, my body is really hot” but eventually the body came back to normal thanks to the solution. The mother said “I’m already thankful enough that Choyeon cured the disease but he also made my son’s business prosperous.” Choyeon now wishes to provide his foresight in Sonpa District Seoul. The temple in Songpa District in particular is highly expected to play a landmark if the development plan of the district is completed. “A rodeo street will be introduced starting from Seokchon Lake and it will function as the cultural street of the district. People are welcome to Gooryong Temple anytime for a rest or a photo. I will gradually develop the temple as a place where people in need can drop by for a meal” said Choyeon.

Meeting with more people and the Korean Buddhism speaking
with one voice are important

When asked about future plan, Choyeon said “I will meet with more people and do more things. I used to avoid meeting people in the past but it is a duty of a religious man to communicate with them and to make things better. Through my business and religious careers, I learned a lot. Unlike Christians, the Korean Buddhism is divided into Mahayana and Hinayana.
