아름다운 습관, 세상을 바꾸는 착한 나눔 ‘WITH MY’

2015년 6월 설립된 소셜 벤처 위드마이(WITH MY)는 「나와 이웃, 그리고 모든 생명을 생각하는 제품」을 모토로 일상 속 나눔을 실천하고 있는 기업이다. 우리가 살아가면서 필수적으로 사용하는 생활용품을 통해 내 몸의 건강은 물론 이웃의 행복, 환경까지도 함께 지켜나가고자 하는 것이다. 美 존스홉킨스대 보건학, 뉴욕대 치대 치의학을 공부하고 치과의사로서 진료와 봉사를 펼쳐온 민승기 대표는 한국에 들어 온 뒤 ‘남녀노소 모두가 일상에서 쉽게 실천할 수 있는 나눔’을 생각하다가 위드마이를 설립하게 되었다고 한다. 그는 “누구나 하루에 최소 2번은 양치질을 하잖아요. 다른 어떤 것보다도 가까이 있고, 일상적으로 사용하는 용품이 바로 치약인거죠. 온가족이 매일 사용하는 치약을 구매하는 일이 소외된 이웃을 돕는 일로 연결된다면 일상 속에서도 자연스럽게 나눔을 실천할 수 있을 것 같았어요”라고 말했다. 위드마이 자체 몰을 통해 치약 하나를 구매하면, 동일한 제품이 서울 은평구에 위치한 보육원인 선덕원에 기부되거나, 쓰레기섬으로 알려진 필리핀 파야타스의 어린이들에게 기부된다. 유통망을 통해 구매되는 제품에 대해서는 수익의 10%가 아이들을 돕기 위한 후원금으로 기부되고 있다.

위드마이가 가장 첫 번째로 생각한 것은 ‘내 몸의 건강’이다. 자신에게 꼭 필요한 좋은 제품이야말로 재구매를 통한 ‘지속적인 나눔’에 도움이 되리라 생각했기 때문이다. 위드마이 치약은 파라벤, 동물성원료, SLS, 광물성오일, 에탄올, 불소 등 8가지 성분을 빼고, 대신 베이킹소다, 녹차추출물, 페퍼민트 오일, 자일리톨, 천연 레몬오일 등의 천연유래성분을 넣었다. 특히 알러지와 염증유발의 원인으로 지목되는 합성계면활성제(소듐라우릴설페이트) 대신 천연계면활성제를 사용해 다소 거품은 적더라도 구강 건강에는 훨씬 좋은 제품을 만들고자 노력했다. 민 대표는 “아이와 어른이 사용하는 치약이 서로 다를 이유는 없어요. 자극이 적은 천연유래성분은 남녀노소 모두의 구강 건강을 지키는 데 도움이 되죠. 또한 우리 몸에 유해하지 않은 성분은 환경에도 해를 끼치지 않아요. 우리 몸을 지키는 일이 곧 환경을 지키는 일이 되는거죠”라고 설명했다.

한국콜마를 통해 제조되는 위드마이 치약은 한국 식약처 KFDA뿐 아니라, 미국 FDA에서도 인정을 받고 있다. 동물성 원료를 전혀 사용하지 않은 비건(vegan) 제품이며, 동물실험을 반대하는 Cruelty free 치약이다. 이에 국내에서는 처음으로 세계최대 동물권리보호단체 페타(PETA)의 인증을 받은 치약이며, 비건 소사이어티 인증 또한 국내 최초로 받았다. 
 
일상 속으로 스며든 ‘나눔’을 만나다
민승기 대표는 구매란 투표권을 행사하는 것과 같다고 강조했다. 그는 “우리들이 어떤 제품이나 브랜드를 구입한다는 것은 곧 ‘이 제품을 지지합니다’라는 의미이기도 해요. 그 제품이 생산되기까지 과정과 기업이 추구하는 방향에 동참한다는 것이죠. 단순히 값싸고 편리한 제품만을 선호한다면, 그 과정에서 노동력을 착취당하는 수많은 아이들이나 잔인한 실험과 사육의 대상이 되는 동물들을 외면하게 되는거죠. 한번쯤은 자신의 선택이 나 자신과 이웃, 환경에 어떠한 영향을 미치게 될지 생각해보는 게 필요해요”라고 말했다.

위드마이 치약을 통해 민 대표가 추구하는 것은 우리들의 생활 가까운 곳에서 ‘나눔’을 실천하는 것이다. 나눔이 어떤 ‘특별한 일’이 아니라, 우리가 살아가면서 자연스럽게 행하는 아주 ‘일상적인 일’이 되도록 만들어가는 것이 그의 목표다. 민 대표는 “거창한 꿈을 꾸고 있지는 않아요. 실제로 저희가 하는 일은 아주 작은 나눔일 뿐이거든요. 하지만 단 한 분이라도 저희 제품을 보고 ‘비건’이 어떤 의미일지 궁금해 하거나, 기부가 어디에 어떻게 되는지에 대해 생각만 해주셔도 너무나 행복할 것 같아요”라고 전했다.

현재 위드마이는 치약, 칫솔, 비누, 수건 등 욕실에서 사용하는 필수품들로 구성된 제품라인 런칭을 준비하고 있다. 모든 제품을 자체 생산하겠다는 욕심을 부리기보다는 좋은 성분과 착한 제조과정 속에서 생산된 좋은 제품들을 선별해 소개하거나 콜라보, 협업 등을 통해 나눔이 일상이 되는 문화를 보급하는 데 더욱 힘쓰고자 한다. 또한 유통망 확대를 통해 더 많은 사람들이 위드마이를 만나고, 나눔의 가치에 대해 생각할 수 있도록 하는 데 주력하고 있다. 

나눔이란 씨앗을 틔우는 것과 같다. 한 명의 개인이 행하는 나눔은 아주 작고 미약할지도 모르지만, 그러한 나눔이 모이고 자라나면 숲을 이루게 된다. 좋은 제품을 통해 나눔의 가치를 전파하고 있는 이들의 노력이 우리 사회에 작은 씨앗으로 움트게 되길 기대한다.

WITH MY is a social venture established in June 2015 to promote sharing culture in our society under the slogan ‘The Products That Think About Me, Neighbors and All Living Things’. CEO Christina Min of WITH MY studied health science at Johns Hopkins University and dental medicine at New York University and worked as a dentist and volunteer after graduation. 

“I thought about promoting sharing culture in our society when I came back to Korea and established WITH MY. My idea was to use articles for daily use such as toothpaste. If the act of buying toothpaste can help people in need, the act might naturally lead to the act of sharing” explains Min. 

We buy toothpaste on the WITH MY mall, the same product goes to Sundukwon (an orphanage in Eunpyeong District, Seoul) or to children on Patays Island in the Philippines, known as a rubbish island, in donation. With My toothpaste is made of natural ingredients including baking soda, green tea extract, peppermint oil, xylitol and lemon oil instead of removing eight negative substances including paraben, animal raw materials, SLS, mineral oil, ethanol and fluorine. The toothpaste uses natural surfactant, in particular, instead of synthetic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate) that is known to cause allergy and inflammation. 

“Toothpaste for adult or children doesn’t necessarily be different as long as the ingredients are natural. So, natural ingredients are good for our body as well as environment.” 

WITH MY toothpaste is produced by Kolmar Korea and approved by KFDA and FDA. It is a vegan and cruelty free product. For this reason, WITH MY toothpaste was also approved by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and the Vegan Society as the first Korean toothpaste. 

Sharing through an act of buying 
Min sees the act of buying like exercising the right to vote. 
“Because buying a certain product or brand can mean the purchaser support the product or brand. In other words, the purchaser gets involved in production process and the company’s business value. It is notable that buying just cheap and convenient products can mean that the purchase unknowingly ignore the fact that there are exploited children or cruelty on animal test behind the manufacturing process of the products. We, therefore, need to think every now and then whether the product we buy can affect negatively to our society.” 

Min continues that sharing is not an act of something special but a repeated act of our daily habit. “We do not intend to realize a big dream through this sharing business. But people might be curious about what ‘vegan’ means and feel happy on the fact that their buying makes a donation to people in need.” Currently, the staff of WITH MY makes busy themselves in launching new product lines including toothbrush, soap and towel and is working hard in cooperation with environmentally-friendly companies. 

Sharing, in a way, means like a seed budding up. Your generous heart might seem nothing but each individual heart makes a forest when gathered together. <Power Korea> hopes that WITH MY’s good will and act might play the role of the budding seed in our society.
